    I loved competing with a .44 magnum in silhouette shooting. I tried a .454 Casull in a Freedom Arms revolver back then, but the thought of putting 200 rounds or more through it during a practice session convinced me that my .44 was just fine. Now you’ve created this beast. I would love to have tried it 20 years ago. If I did so now, my hands might never forgive me.

    @@sethdaboss245 The .500 BW in a revolver is a bit less powerful than a .500 NE from a rifle, though given equivalent length barrels, the .500 BW will always be more powerful than the .500 NE (assuming the latter is loaded to regulation pressures). I doubt whether even Scott could shoot an unbraked .500 BW without injury, and I'd certainly hate to see him try. For safety reasons, every .500 BW conversion we put out has a brake. Absolutely. I own a 500 Auto Max from Big Horn Armory, and seeing THIS cartridge receiving the same Rifle conversion treatment would be awesome! 500 Auto Max is built on an AR-10, and if the Magwell were hogged out should take .308 cartridge lengths. Is that enough for this round? I can't tell just from pictures, but sadly I don't think so.

  • @tiiarmory

    @tiiarmory

    @@BattleshipSailorBB63 The cartridge overall length for the .500 Bushwhacker runs about 2.9-2.95" with most bullets. The AR-10 can handle something in the 2.8-2.85" range. Of course, in a carbine length barrel without any cylinder gap, it should be pretty easy to achieve similar ballistics from a rifle, even with a slightly shorter cartridge. We'd like to do something along those lines someday. The .500 WTF is a similar concept that's already out there. VA Silent Arsenal has also done a .458 WSM (I believe headstamped brass is available for this one).

    I would like to know when we could purchase that firearm as I love large frame firearms and they are fun to shoot. If the T/C Encore could chamber it then there would be a much greater improvement in foot pounds of energy. Of course, I do not know if it would be a safe chambering simply as there are limits to any firearm but they could someday beef up their encores and then it would be a safe chambering. You would need a very heavy barrel with a large brake and then it would be pleasant to shoot. I have an encore chambered for the 458 Winchester with a 25 inch heavy barrel and a effective brake which will give similar ballistics to the Bushwhacker as I have it in a handgun configuration.. The Bushwhacker works with short barrels unlike the 458 as rifle cartridges need a longer tube to reach respectable velocities. I bet the Bushwacker would be a easy cartridge to reload and firing a 500 S and W would be a pleasure to shoot in it.

With similar max pressures as the .460 or .500 S&W, with 240 gr. & 265 gr. bullets you should be able to get 2400 - 2600 fps with about 60% of the recoil. how does the bushwacker perform in a rifle? and how does it compare with the .50 Alaskan or the .50-110 WCF?

  • @tiiarmory

    @tiiarmory

    Жыл бұрын

    We’re just about to complete our first few .500 BW rifles. We’ll be able to run longer cartridge lengths in that context and utilize a broader span of bullets (such as the brass CEBs). I suspect ballistics will slightly exceed the .458 Lott; usable case capacity is pretty similar with these loads. The .500 BW is considerably longer than the .50 Alaskan and slightly longer than the .50-110. It shoots a smaller diameter bullet and has a somewhat smaller base diameter. With the BW, we can run higher pressures (comparable to the .500 S&W) in the BFR and certain other platforms than would be advisable with a .50-110. In those contexts and for this reason, we achieve a fair bit more performance than the .510” cartridges (there is also a much broader array of suitable handgun bullets in .500” than .510”). Of course, one reason for the considerable increase in power the .500 BW offers over the .510” BFR conversions is the Ti Pro muzzle brakes we use. Without an effective muzzle brake, it just isn’t practical to exceed .500 Magnum ballistics from a BFR. All of the .50 AK/.50-110 handgun numbers I’ve seen fall well short of what +L .500 Magnum loads can do. Folks reach a recoil ceiling before they hit the power potential of those cartridges in the converted revolvers. In some rifle platforms, like the Ruger No. 1, one could run the .510” cartridges at comparable pressures to the .500 Bushwhacker, producing very similar results.

    Is it theoretically possible to make an AR-10 style rifle or any semi auto rifle in this caliber?

  • @tiiarmory

    The .500 BW is a semi-rimmed case design with a maximum cartridge length of about 2.95” in the BFR. A rimless variant with a slightly shorter cartridge length (perhaps 2.85” or so) would function in an AR-10, given a properly designed magazine.

    I am curious, which magnum research BFR do you need in order to convert it into a 500 bushwacker. Would you need the BFR 45/70? Also, whats the price to convert it?

  • @tiiarmory

    You can start with a number of chamberings. .500 S&W is the easiest, since it does not require rebarreling. You can also begin with .460 S&W, .45/.410, .450 Marlin, .444 Marlin, or .30-30. The .45-70 has too thick and large of a rim to be suitable. It is important to start with a five shot long cylinder BFR (some are now built in the six shot configuration). I can’t mention price on KZread, unfortunately.

    Gentleman from Alabama on another channel had a Winchester 1886 rebarrelled years ago to .50-110 WCF. Due to modern steels and the general strength of the 1886 made in modern times (Miroku Japan), he's loaded it to 6400 ft-lb energy. Surprising what that rifle can punch 1/2-inch holes through. AR500 target steel doesn't stand a chance.

    The .50-110 is quite similar to the .500 BW (case capacity is essentially identical). The distinction between the two is essentially the same as between a .500 Maximum and a .500 S&W. We’ve loaded a 500 gr +L bullet in the .500 BW to 2,400 fps from a 20” barrel, though that’s with a significantly longer COL (3.15”) than we utilize with the revolvers. The usable case capacity here is significantly higher than is the case for a .458 Lott, and performance is quite comparable. When feeding through the magazine, a .50-110 in an 1886 is more limited on COL (2.75” or so) than the .500 BW BFRs. In a single shot, the sky is the limit for bullet projection and the two rounds are in a pretty similar spot.

    @@tiiarmory That's interesting to know. Yeah I believe he used a .45-90 action with some modification to feed the .50-110 casing with his rebarrel, I think he runs a 26" tapered octagonal. That's one limitation with lever actions, is COAL. He's getting power between .458 Lott and .460 Wby Mag. He's commonly used about 350gr Hawk bullet. The heavier bullets I do believe he pushes lower in the casing with a corresponding loss of powder capacity. Maybe you've seen the channel. I'm sure you'd love his work. /watch?v=JQ6bEK1Lkos

    @@tiiarmory having it compatible with all of the more available.50 cartridges was a great idea especially because the special is more inline with deer hunting and the jrh and s&w being able to cover most if not all the game the bushwhacker can with less certainty with the very large things ( I would use the bushwacker for everything on earth but elephant because that is a bit to nerve racking for me, still think the bushwacker could do it though) you guys are doing impressive work and I hope you get the reputation that you're work should get.

    This is great, although calling it the most powerful handgun is slightly off since the Austrian Pfeifer Zeliska beats it slightly due to being chambered in .600 nitro

  • @tiiarmory

    The Pfeifer Zeliska “only” reaches 1,500 fps with a 900 grn bullet from its 13” barrel, so its power level falls a bit below what we’re doing with the .500 Bushwhacker. It’s very cool though. No arguments there.

    @@deloresford6644 Do you mean the .50-140? I've seen a few TC Encores chambered in it. While that's a physically larger cartridge than the .500 Bushwhacker, it's typically loaded to much lower chamber pressures and accordingly produces inferior ballistic performance.
