50 years ago, 10-cent beers helped turn a Cleveland baseball game into a bloody riot

Beer flowed and a little blood and bruises followed. There was some baseball played in between.
On a warm spring night along Lake Erie five decades ago, a well-intended promotion meant to attract fans for the perpetually lousy Cleveland Indians turned ugly and triggered a booze-fueled riot now known as one of the most notorious events in American sports history.
On Tuesday, 10-cent beer night turns 50.
Cheers. Burp.
A game that began with a handful of fans tipsy on cheap beer running across the outfield grass - some of them naked - collapsed into chaos.
During a scary ninth inning, Texas manager Billy Martin, never one to back down from a fight, turned to his players in the dugout and told them to grab bats before leading a charge onto the Municipal Stadium field and into mayhem.

Adjusted for inflation today in 2024 those beers would be 64¢ instead of 10 and it would be $6.40 ish for the 5 beers and ticket to the game…

When I was stationed on Oahu in the early '80s, I had a high school buddy that was stationed at Pearl Harbor (I was Army, stationed on a Naval Air Station). One night we got together and decided to walk down to the Enlisted Mens' Club, because they had a promotion that featured nickel beer, and strippers, For $1.20 they would give you a case of Coors with all the pop tabs pulled, My friend and I each took our cases of beer to a table next to the runway and awaited the mayhem to come. That morning, the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne had arrived in port from serving in Reforger, a multinational military exercise, so their crew was anxious to partake in the celebrations. Approximately one hundred Aussie crewmates arrived, and lined the strippers' runway. Amongst them was a twelve boy, who the entire Aussie crew doted on. The show started, and the Aussie crew, while on their best behavior were getting drunker and drunker, especially the young boy. By the third stripper, the lad was sloshed. The Filipino girl removed her pasties, and dropped them onto the runway, when the boy reached out and popped them into his mouth. The stripper reacted by kicking the boy in the mouth, and it was ON! My buddy and i took our cases of beer, and ducked under our table to weather the storm. Over an hour later, Shore Patrol finally has the situation under control, and we came out from under our table and shook hands all around. Meanwhile the club was in shambles. A month later, the same stripper troupe came to my Naval Air station and performed at our EM Club, Nickel Beer Night included. Same promotion, similar results. On my base, the Marine Corps guarded it, civilians patrolled it, the Navy cleaned it, and the Army fucked it up. When the inevitable brawl started and was going good, some of our guys walked over to our flight shack, less than a hundred yards away, grabbed a handful of wrenches and returned to the club parking lot, where half a dozen rent-a-cop cars were haphazardly parked, They proceeded to remove every light bar from the civilian cop cars, and placed them behind each car. A good time was had by all!
