Centurions were done a bit dirty, as last historically speaking, by Age of Empires. They were leaders. A Centurion was the commander of 100 Legionaries. A Cohort was a set of 6 Centurions leading 600 Legionaries. The unique unit variant that the Romans in Age of Empires 2 get, is a bit better, since their aura buffs Legionaries within 10 tiles of them, so you are incentivized to have far more legionaries, and a few Centurions mixed in.

These are the AoE1 Centurions, which aren’t exclusive to the Romans.

People often forget how OP were the Phalanx in AoE 1

As op as they are, archer spam (especially horse archer and chariot archer) made quick work against them, especially with how AoE1 didn’t have many options for infantry to get more protection against ranged attacks (not all civs could get to the 3rd shield upgrade and so risked their phalanxes being at only 2 ranged protection as they had 0 protection against arrows by default) and archers being able to kite the slow phalanxes easily (even the speedy greek boiis) made making armies consisting of many phalanxes a suicide move and bye bye for your precious gold spent on all those units

To be fair, everyone is more lightly armored, in AoE 3. So as long as they can get close enough, they will do significant damage.

And due to being an AoE1 unit (AoE1 has no unique units), Samurai can’t benefit from their attack bonus versus unique units.

New DLC few weaks or so back add Rome And some other nations to the game but romans are or were broken... Idk i play only AoE 3-4 and AoM i just know that from some videos about that DLC 😅

they're an end game unit that takes a long time to build up to, are created slow, and are expensive, they're not busted at all if you let your opponent mass 100 centurions it's your fault

The name "centurion" dont really fit the unit. That unit its more close to a pretorian soldier or triarii... Centurions historically are just the guy that comands over 80 soldiers.

Gotta side with Premium. Its like letting the goths get all their barracks and tech up, its either a skill issue or you had something up your sleeve that shuts them down like a sniper treb in regicide.

It won't change the outcome of the fight. Elite samurai will only have 12+4 damage (+12 bonus) at 80 hp and 1+3 armor against a Centurion with 30+7 attack, 160hp and 8+6 armor

I believe samurai (the ones that historically kind of exist after 1200 BCE) would wipe the floor with roman centurions. I'm thinking centurions back in the late republic early empire. Id consider that a peak, afterwards there is sort of a decline and i believe the eastern roman empire even stops using that nomenclature altogether. And they never employed the kind of full-plate heavy armor impervious to anything but the most powerful crossbows. Soo, comparing the two would comparing 2 units that are over 1000 years apart. The samurai would have an advantage, and there are examples throughout history where even the mighty roman phalanx got destroyed (carhae, teutonburg). Im not trying to bash the romans, they are the pioneers of modern warfare, especially in terms of hierarchy and logistics. I just feel a samurai would do better due to being "newer".

@@revolvency Having handcannons or having arqebusses is a big difference though. Early firearms came to europe I believe somewhere in 1500's and I think it took the Portugese another 100 year to reach japan (rough estimates I am not sure on this!)

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Historically they are infantry, they’re just promoted legionaries and served both land and sea. They’re so distinguished that they could even discipline Roman citizens with corporal punishment, something that basically no one else on Earth could do. Their symbol was literally a vine staff that they used to “mend the fences” aka restore order to unruly peoples. They were exceptionally noble and essential as they maintained all logistics and supply routes and were, in some ways, the heart of and soul of what kept Rome successful for a time.

A serious question. I haven't played it yet (can't set up until certain I have this apartment) so I want to know: *are they legionnaires or centurions?* Using phone and iPad to research aoe2. I like the look of the Romans, also Byzantines and Sicilians.. Japanese, Aztecs. Hard to choose! Khmer ballista elephants are so Star Wars🤔

We had such a nice contrast in aoe2. Centurions vs samurai. All with unique look and animations. Aoe4 every unit looks the same to me. Kind of lame :(

Expected behaviour

For one thing, the centurions would not fight individually. They would naturally form up in at least one rank, shield to shield as they had taught their soldiers. They'd have met the samurai as a single cohesive force and massacred them.
