Small chunk of advice for anyone doing this type of chiller. Add a water vessel to submerge your coil in. A high salt solution works well to transfer heat and provide a buffer from temp changes when opening the door preserving the duel use of the mini fridge. And a outboard temp control.

Just read this after my big automated rant lol my concept went further only with an electrically actuated y valve on the return line if they needed the freezer part. You'd need an overflow from your main tank and a big enough tote thing in the bottom of the fridge and a pump that'll run that with a low static temperature (outdoor pond ones usually will-check head pressure capabilities to make sure it'll pump up to the top of the tank). But you take the side that's open to flow with no power on the return line Y valve to the fridge tank with the pump. Controller fails, but pump doesn't then the water just flows continuously into the coil and back on itself to slow down the freeze potential, though in a short loop it will get very cold before the fridge kicks out to compensate. Controller actuates the return side to display tank. Temp goes up on the display, valve kicks on and cool water flows to the main tank with the excess flowing back to the fridge tank from the overflow on the display.

Love it, thank you, even a new Minifridge with freezer about $140 is way cheaper than a cooler. And you can keep frozen treats like bloodworms, Brime shrimp and worms in it. If you can get the fridge free or already have one, even way better.

Have you had an issue with mold in the clear tube?

Curious if it would be easier to attach the pump to a thermostat so it kicks off and on. Maybe the tube in the freezer section might be a problem freezing, but I'm sure there's some work around so it would require less manual babysitting of the temp

I have mine hooked to a cooling thermostat but my fridge also doesn’t have a freezer compartment. The water shouldn’t freeze though so long as it keeps moving which would become a problem with a thermostat that shuts the pump off.

Probably late, but I would run bulkheads through the fridge where you know it's only plastic and insulation for the tubing. Small plastic project box/panel box big enough to accommodate your selection of parts. Get a tiny 1/16 or 1/8 DIN - PID temperature controller with on/off relay outputs. Get a large (as big as you can fit on its side), large-mouth jar or container that you can drill the lid for tubing bulkheads for a watertight seal. Coil the tubing in the jar without pinching it off or kinking it. (Use 1:1 nipples where possible to keep things modular and easier to work with: I.E. the container and coil send and return lines) fill the container with all the way so the coils are completely surrounded by water as this will help transfer the heat out of the water from your tank faster. This avoids using the freezer. With the on/off controller running the hot leg of an outlet. If going the freezer route, you'd need an over flow on your tank and a basin/surge tub in the fridge and the pump would reside there (must be able to hold the volume of head from top of tank to the inlet of the overflow) in this case the controller monitors tank temperature the same as before, but here you need a spring return plastic potable electric Y-valve or 3-way valve. The active side of the valve (state while energized) should go to your tank, the inactive side (state with no power) of the valve should be ran to the surge tank in the fridge. When the main tank reaches the setpoint, the valve kicks off and the pump in the bottom of the fridge tank keeps running sending water continuously through the loop so it doesn't freeze, just dumps back to pump tank.

I noticed that to achieve temperature from 30 to 26 degrees Centigrade, the thermostat doesn't trip at all and the fridge was extremely hot until I switched it off.I think I need a larger fridge.

Anyone tried this with those like 6 can refrigerators? They basically have an ice block at the back.. just thinking smaller and easier to manage

I need a chiller for my tank and there is no way I could drop a rent payment on one, but has your tanks temperature ever dropped too low from this? I just wanna keep my little buddy safe.

Why not use some kind of heat sink instead?

apparently you get black algae if you use clear hose. Was recommended to get opaque hose from another similar tutorial. thanks for the great video

I haven't had any problems at all. If you get algae built up in the tubing just connect to a high pressure nozzle on your hose and it will spray out.

I have it at full power all summer when my house is at 73 degrees. The temp stays between 68-65 degrees. It has worked the same this summer too.

That's a very small tank for 2 adult axolotls

They might be happy about the temperature. But they are not happy at all with the fish that you house together. You should remove the axolotls. It's a small tank for 2 axolotls anyway. Also if you put more tubing in the fridge and you will see the temperature to go down really fast and be more stable.

@@katebattista7400 depends on the type of fish, and the age of the axolotl. I 100% agree if the axolotl was a juvenile and was housed with aggressive fish. But its all circumstantial.
