5 ways to get faster fingers on the flute

Today I am sharing a few, perhaps slightly unusual, approaches to improving your finger technique on the flute so that you can play faster, with more evenness and control. These are some of the things that I have learnt along the way and have really helped me. At the end of the video I am also sharing some exercises that will help you improve your finger speed and practice these skills. Happy practicing

So I’ve worked out why I can’t play fast pieces. Two reasons. One is, I do get very tense. I think it’s fear of making mistakes. The second reason is, I still can’t double tongue properly. I can double tongue without the flute and while doing exercises like scales but I just can’t when playing a piece. It’s so frustrating.

Maria Davis totally agree with one of these responses! It takes time. I always think of 3 layers: 1. Practicing a technique on its own 2. Applying it to pieces 3. Performing it in a concert. It takes time for the technique to deep through to layer 2 and 3! Nearly a year later but how is it going?

hey Tatiana, i think you just beat your record for the your longest video ! good job ! As far as i am concern speed is not my main concern but the coordination between the embouchure work and the fingers. When i need to go fast my finger are doing a note but my lips arent syncronized...That's my concern. But i guess it all comes with practice...and watching you videos Thanks again !

Els VdW I’m sorry to hear that. Releasing excessive tension will be your best friend, but also remember that it isn’t all about speed. The most beautiful and moving music is slow. So always do the most you can an accept what you can’t change. It doesn’t make you any lesson of an important flute voice in this world! Good luck 🎶

@@TheFlutePractice thank you so much for your reaction! you are absolutely right about the tension, the fingers tend to bend inwards on their own so there is definetely work to do there 🙂 You have a new suscriber, I really like the relaxed, detailed and funny way you explain everything. Keep up the good work! 🤘🏽

My right hand little finger locks when naturally bent on the keys. I have to take it off my flute and knock it on my leg to unlock it. It could be arthritis as I’m 60, but now I think it’s not. Have you any specific exercise to loosen that little finger

Nicola Harvey hey there, I have not filmed anything yet but it is a good idea. It sounds like you are putting too much pressure on that finger. I would play a D and practicing trilling or tapping it to Eb and trying in that to just keep the finger released and free. Then start trying other finger combinations and keep it free. I would also check what your right hand thumb is doing. Very often he is the culprit too! Hope that helps a bit.

If nothing else you've tried has worked for you, there's always aversion therapy: as most of us know from experience, no finger enjoys being hit with a hammer. Next time your little finger jambs, give it a convincing whomp at the affected joint with a framing hammer jusy before freeing it. Then always keep the framing hammer on your music stand where your finger can see it.
