5 ways to avoid seasickness on a cruise

Check out our latest video on this topic: • Reliefband Motion Sick...
Hey cruisers, It’s Sheri with CruiseTipsTV. Today we are going to talk about ways to avoid seasickness on a cruise or sea sickness remedies on your cruise. Nothing lays the smackdown on cruise fun like seasickness. I KNOW ....it used to be a problem for me too. This can be a real problem for a first time cruiser. We’ve got the low down on location, the scoop on scopolamine and something new we are very curious about. Let’s get right to it - shall we?
1. Let’s start of with something that you may not be considering when thinking of avoiding seasickness. Itinerary. For some people, … like me, it’s the crazy rough water that really brings on the sea dizzies. If possible, you should try to avoid areas that are known for rough waters. It may be easiest to talk with your travel agent about what locations to avoid and when, but generally you start with avoiding ocean crossings.
2. And speaking of location, where your cabin is located on the ship can have a big impact on the motion you feel. If you struggle with seasickness, You’ll want pick a cabin near the middle of the ship. The further you are away from the front and back of the ship the less motion you’ll feel. These staterooms tend to book up faster than others. So, start your cabin selection early.
3. We’ve heard ginger root can be very effective. Many scientific (and not so scientific) studies have confirmed it. You can try ginger candy, ginger root, or chews, ginger tablets, capsules or cookies, but remember, it’s best to start using this natural remedy at least 24 hours before you embark. By the way, most studies recommend ginger for mild cases, and it may not help with nausea or be effective in all instances.
4. Next up are wristbands. We’ve talked about these before; in fact we just did an entire episode on Acustraps - a super cheap solution, similar to Sea-Band or BioBands. Sea band motion sickness bands have been around for a while. The basic idea is these wristbands use an acupressure principle. It's kind of a acupressure bracelet, or acupressure band. There is a small stud on the band that applies constant pressure to something called “the P6 point” on the inner part your wrist. I’ve used these quite often for mild symptoms, but I’ve gotta say, if you really suffer, talk to your doctor and ask about the big player on the block - scopolamine
5. Scopolamine is a prescription medication that comes in the form of a patch you apply to the skin behind your ear. You'll see loads of people wearing these on just about any cruise. Yes, it may be a hassle to see your doctor, but for some people, this is the best option.
6. Finally, as a bonus, we have something different that we are extremely curious about. Are you ready for this? Yep, there’s an app for that. We heard about a motion sickness app called Nevasic (I think that's how to pronounce it) that is designed alleviate symptoms associated with motion sickness. We’re considering doing an entire episode on this. Let us know if it’s something you’d like to hear more about.
We hope this has been helpful. We don’t want anything to ever ruin your cruise. As always, thanks for watching, and until next time, we’ll see you on the high seas.

Bonine which is Meclizine , is great for motion sickness prevention. Just take one in the morning during your cruise and enjoy a motion sickness free cruise without being drowsy.

If you are feeling motion sickness try drinking gingerale with several drops of bitters in it. Sounds crazy I know, but trust me, it will help. I have been on 20 cruises and get sea sick but NOTHING will stop me from cruising...not even sea sickness. Crackers, GREEN apples (yes green only) gingerale with bitters and all the wonderful tips Sheri has given as well. I LOVE all your video blogs Sheri. Thank you SO much. You are terrific.

I remember my first cruise on the Carnival Inspiration in October 2013 to Catalina Island and Ensenada. When we left Long Beach, I did feel nauseous but Dramamine is your best friend for seasickness. Also I remember the drive home after getting off the ship when I felt nauseous from getting used to being on dry land again. Dramamine also helped with that. But it does make you feel tired. Had to drink a Coke to jumpstart my system when we were at Catalina.

I can get motion sick just thinking about it so when I say it's possible to handle your sea sickness, believe me, it is! Here are some things you might not have thought about. If you're in the spa, using the exercise equipment, make sure you don't move in the opposite way the ship is moving! (Once I got on the rowing machine and one stroke in, I was about on the floor!). Second, if you're feeling poorly, get outside and smell the ocean air. While you're there, look out over the horizon. I learned this trip back in my sailing days. (You want to know sea sickness, try being on a 40 foot sail boat in the ocean!) If you're feeling queezy, don't read, look down, go to a movie, or any of those kinds of things. Really, Get outside! Look up! Finally, I know you mentioned ginger root. I agree. I found that ginger tea is also fairly helpful.) Oh one more "finally." Check out some websites for sailors. I found an interesting lotion to dab behind the ears and it actually worked quite well when I was sailing across the gulf stream a number of years ago.

Motion sickness is a huge issue for me and the patches have worked great. I usually remove the patch after the first 3 days and have no issues for the remainder of the cruise or post cruise. I do take extra just in case.

hey there, great video and really good information . I was wondering why you didn't mention the over the counter remedies. Like Dramamine ,Bonine, Queasy Pops, and something called Divertigo. The last one a friend of mine uses for motion sickness on planes &up in the mountains(way Up). Most of these are very helpful. If they make you too drowsy for enjoying your cruise, you can get children's doses or you can halve them. Thanks again for all the help and great travel vids. I love them : )

Hey world wanderer! Thank you for the nice comment. You are too kind. We didn't cover some of the over the counter remedies in this episode just to keep it shorter. We may do an episode with just OTC and/or natural remedies in the future. Your tip about Divertigo will be very helpful if we do.

I personally don't recommend the patches, they are known to cause extreme sickness after removal. This happened to my mom, it's almost like her body had become addicted to them and she went through horrible withdrawal symptoms after several of our cruises. She's read up on them and it happens to many many people. So my tip - if you can, go for the dramamine or other OTC remedies.

Any tips on post cruise motion sickness? I haven't experienced motion sickness on cruises (using patches behind my ear), but recently experienced motion sickness nearly the moment I step off the ship for several days.

The scopalomine patch often comes with terrible withdrawal symptoms, likely what you are experiencing after a cruise. Here is an article with a little more information. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3971103/

My wife and I very much want to take a cruise for the honeymoon we didn't get. The problem is my motion sickness. I get sick if I'm not driving the car sometimes and when we rented a beach house on stilts, the movement of the house gave me extreme nausea. If I were the get the Scopolamine, do you think I would be able to get through the cruise without getting sick or falling asleep from dramamine.

+zzdalym81 It's hard to say. Most people do fine on large cruise ships because the stabilizers are very powerful. However, I do have a colleague that get sick when she steps foot on a ship - before it even moves. I'm not sure what causes it but even without any motion some people become ill onboard ships. The only way to find out is to try. You may want to choose one of the larger ships with new stabilizers and avoid an itinerary that is particularly Rough, such as a transatlantic.
