Motion Sickness and How to Prevent it

Tips about sea sickness (or motion sickness) and how to prevent or alleviate the symptoms. See our episode on wrist bands here: • Do Motion Sickness Wri...
Hi, I'm Sheri from CruiseTipsTV.
Today we are going to talk about something that can absolutely ruin your cruise ... and we're going to give you a few tips about how to avoid it. Here's the scenario, you've subscribe to our channel, and watched all our tip videos, and ... Wait, you haven't subscribed? Well do it now then. I'll wait.
Okay, so you've watched the videos and planned everything, but on your cruise you suddenly feel dizzy and nauseous, and it's getting worse. Yes, it's the most hated of hated, motion sickness. It can happen to anyone, but the common symptoms of nausea, vomiting and dizziness can generally be prevented and treated. And we've collected a few tips to help you do just that. These aren't in any specific order, and what works for you may not work for others. So, Pack and be prepared with a few options just in case.
1. We'll start with what I use occasionally - a wristband. This helps prevent symptoms from occurring. These wristbands are sold at drugstores under brand names like Sea-Band and BioBands, and they have a hard round button that gently presses against an acupressure point in your wrist, which is said to control nausea.
2. Perhaps the most common approach is over-the-counter medication containing dimenhydrinate or diphenhydramine. You'll see these marketed under several brand names, but look for those active ingredients. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should begin taking the medication half-hour to an hour before boarding. This give the medication time to work. Then continue taking it as directed by the usage instructions.
3. If you prefer a more natural approach, ginger root can be very effective. Many scientific (and not so scientific) studies have confirmed it. Our advice however, pack this (ginger candy) not this (ginger root). You can also try ginger tablets, capsules or cookies on your next cruise. It's best to start using this natural remedy at least 24 hours before you embark on your cruise. Most studies recommend ginger for mild cases, and it may not be effective in all instances.
4. The Mayo Clinic also suggests using a prescription scopolamine patch if you have experienced motion sickness in the past and haven't had success with over the counter medication. Apply the patch to the skin behind your ear. Replace it with a fresh patch every three days. Obviously it's best to discuss this with you doctor.
5. This one may not always make the most sense, but it could be effective in some circumstances. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, keeping your eyes on one fixed point reduces aggravating stimuli that can cause motion sickness symptoms. Taking a trip to the top deck on the ship and looking out at the horizon may help when you start to feel ill.
Here are a couple more quick tips to remember.
1. Dehydration can make the symptoms worse, so drink plenty of water during the day.
2. Pick a cabin near the middle of the ship if you are prone to motion sickness. The motion of the ship is less noticeable in this area. The further you are away from the "motion of the ocean" the less motion you'll feel. So a midship cabin on a lower deck could be a good choice if you suffer from motion sickness.
That's it for this episode. Be sure to check us out on twitter @CruiseTipsTV. Now get out there and cruise. If you like this video, please like and subscribe. And please, share our videos with fellow cruisers. We have more on the way. Until then, we'll see you on the high seas.

I have a tip, a lot of the time when you're sick it's because you feel motion and suddenly you go into panic mode and then you think you'll be ill so you are. This is a skill I'm working on but it's just to stay calm and try to take your mind off of it and try to think of it as a fun ride 😂 if you think positively then you will feel much better and it will give you the motivation to get out of bed and do something like go for a walk around the ship and you will feel much better. Obviously this won't completely stop it but combined with the tricks in the video you should be fine!

We did the scopolamine patch and it worked great. The only draw back to it is the possible side effects. My wife complained about a little bit of blurry vision but it cleared up about a day after removing the patch. I'm just getting to some of these older videos and I want to compliment you on how well you have improved over time. The current ones, you come across very professional and precise. The older ones I notice a little hesitation. I hope that didn't seem critical because it's not my intention. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Bruce!😊 A few Q's about Scopolamine patches: 1) They say the patches last 3 days...Thus, you reapply a new one every 3 days. Are these bad boys water proof then? I have to shower/shampoo daily and wonder if some of the water/shampoo leaks/seeps into the patch which is like a giant bandaid? (If I recall right...I used to wear one for a 4 hour flight...but then would rip it off as soon as we landed. So I'm not familiar how the Scope patch works with showering. Can you ask the wifey for me? lol We go on our maiden voyage here in San Diego for the mexican riviera and dread being seasick and killing future trips altogether! lol🤢 thanks, Bruce.

Here in Spain we have Biodramina (like Dramamine). I toke them since we left Venezia until we arrived at Malaga. Seven stormy days. Speaking with my parents, I got in panic & wanted to get out from the ship but the weather went allright (and I enjoy the rest of the cruise) until we finished the cruise at Miami (except two or three days that was a rainy & windy day but the sea was in calm). So for me works get out & have a fresh air but its complicate because they closed the doors for security. With the pills, I got a big headache & want anything to do onboard. I never try the seabands & the patch. Maybe on my next cruise I will try both.

I didn't hear you mention meclizine hcl (brand name is Bonine). This is an OTC med which was developed during WW2 using 40K U.S. sailors for testing. It's a chewable fruit flavoured tablet best taken at night and works for 24 hours to prevent motion sickness. No drowsy side effects if taken at bedtime. We've been in the Pacific during a storm headed for Hawaii and never felt a thing. Worth trying for sure.

I'm glad you suggested looking for the horizon, that's my remedy; best combined with fresh air .... not always easy in stormy weather! Ginger is good for nausea - what ever the cause. It also tastes great, but I agree - carrying ginger root across international borders might not be a good idea. We take herbal ginger tea in bags. You can ask at your health food store which brands are especially good for nausea.

For some people good tip is to do that: when you are on board and start to feel sick, eat (low fat meal) as much as you can and drink it with SPARKLING water (I hate it) until you will burp. How do I know that? I am seafarer and to be honest only this method and scopolamine patch works for me.

The Sea Bands I used for my cruise had no metal in or on them. It was just a plain elastic band with a smooth, hard plastic bump on the inside of the band. They were very helpful and I could easily feel the difference when I would get brave and take them off.

Thanks for the tips! Let me just say, motion sickness runs on my Dad’s side & if I get it, there is no going back! I used this plan of attack on my last cruise with much success. It may be a bit overkill but I’m not giving that nausea a chance to get me down ever again! 1. Take Bonine or Dyphenhydramine the night before disembarkation. 2. Eat a green apple with a light lunch & apply band to acupressure points before getting on the boat. 3. After boarding, Suck on ginger candy after drinking some ginger tea 4. Eat light dinner & avoid the urge to eat fatty foods with lots of bread. 5. Take another Bonine that night while catching some ocean breezes. Hit the bed around midnight. 6. Begin day 2 toast, green apple & ginger tea (I bring my own tea) and if I am still nausea free, I can relax. Will probably take a Bonine again that night to be on the safe side. By day 3, I shouldn’t need anything because I’ve nipped it in the bud. But, if it starts again on day 4 or 5, then I’m back to the original plan of attack!
