5 Watt Combo Amp Shootout: Vox AC4, VHT Special 6, Laney Cub, Tubemeister 5, Valve Junior, MORE!

Six different 5 Watt Tube amp combos go head to head - Clean sounds, moderate drive, and full gain. If you are wondering which Tube combo might be the right one for you, here's a good starting point for comparing. Back-to-back audio comparisons start at 3:45
I've left out the somewhat pricier Marshall and Blackstar 5 watt combos, but there are TONS of reviews on KZread of those already.

I bought the VHT when it first came out as it was driven by a 6V6 valve which I believe the original Fender Champs used... couldn't afford one of those so bought the VHT... it is really a wonderful amplifier... with a Strat or Telecaster it sounds just right... enjoyed the shootout.

Great shootout! I wish I had seen it prior to doing all the research (played a number of these in stores) but I ended up with a Vox AC4 C1-12 which I love. It really sounds great with loads of mojo and character. I find the others either too thin or lacking warmth. Can't beat that Vox sound IMO. Great in my apartment and for recording and playing with a few friends without blowing out the acoustics and voices. Handles pedals through the front well.

I like that VHT and was thinking about getting one soon, but the new Vox AC4's with the 12 inch speakers are pretty fantastic. It sounded a little thin/flat out of the box, but after playing it for a while the sound broke in quite nicely.

Very helpful video. Good choices to compare. I have a Vox AC4-TV and really like it, but from these selections, I found the VHT and Career sounded the best (as another person noted). The Valve Jr. sounded the worst to me; a very muffled sound. The Laney was second from the bottom. I guess I'll look at the VHT (unless I can find a deal on a Fender) for my next amp. Thanks.

Thanks for this comparison...best I've seen yet in helping me determine a low wattage amp. I currently have the Monoprice 5W combo, which many online reviewers claim to be the Laney rebranded. From the sounds of your demo, I can believe it. BTW...I get the best from it on single coil guitars setting it just at breakup (volume 7), and then adding my pedals to push it in the direction I want to go. And the tone is amazing with it's stock Celestion speaker. I have purchased a 1x12 cab to add to it which is on the way...an Egnater Rebel cab with a WGS Retro 30 speaker in it. I'm hoping for an even bigger, amazing sound. But from what I heard from your demo, I might just add a VHT Special 6 head or Vox AC4 head for a little more fun.

Great video! It helped me fin my own little amp set up. Ive been in the market for a smaller amp for practice and gigs. Its so easy to mic an amp now a days and I really don't like the hassle of carrying a expensive, 60 plus pound amp down stairs then back up the stairs at 1am. I also wanted something I can actually practice with at low volumes but great gain. So I decided on a vox ac4c1 12 and the vht special 6 ultra for my quick grab and go stereo set up. Cool thing is I snagged them both together for $400!

Great shoutout. Def not epiphone (dark & muddy) nor HUghes (too glassy and thin). Laney ok, breaks far too early, little muddy. Very very balanced & gritty the VHT (I own). You must love the VOX (I own) that is possibly the best clean. The Joyo (Carrer) (I own) is SWEET! Possibly the best. For sure the best bang for the buck. Hands down! It’s even the only with a 3 valves design with rectifier. Not a surprise since it’s a Fender Tweed Champ clone.. I assume they all have stock tubes: The beauty of VHT is you can play with valves. Also it’s the only one with attenuator to play quite. And it’s cheaper than others in the lot. I have to admit VOX and Joyo are the amps that among many I play the most. They do great with pedals.

I agree. The GA5 gets crackly at the top (and doesn't have much gain). I also was surprised about the Tubemeister 5... I didn't care for the the driven sounds at all. The Laney has a "smaller" sound (and is the smallest of the bunch) but also has limited gain. That one will sound great into a cab with a 12" or two, and a couple pedals in front ;) Thanks for writing in. joe

I have a Laney Cub 10, with the Celestion G10 Vintage speaker it is a completely different animal. Ok, it is a budget amp, but if you change some components like tubes, speaker and some others inside ( I took it to a tech to replace the weak parts inside ) it will be a nice amp, even for gigging, rehearsals, etc.. But then it won't be a budget one anymore :) Probably the VHT is a better one for mods, maybe next time I'll gonna get one.

diarmaidok great review and comment. I too have the laney cub 8 and after speaker break in it is just a fantastic little amp. I have it set to as clean as possible then add a slight bit of reverb and delay. A blues driver is used on occasion. Btw, I use the high input for single coils and low input for humbuckers. The cub 8 takes pedals very well.

I use mine as clean as possible too, I set the tone to 1 for my tenor telecaster (incredibly trebly even with the pickups set really low) and set to about 5 for my tenor Stratocaster and mandostrat. I use a boss rv6 sometimes for reverb for slow stuff, I mainly play Irish traditional music on them and have broke the speaker in over lockdown...might even get a Jensen speaker for it one day

My favorite artists are the Beatles and Hendrix so the Vox is very appealing. That said, I went with the Laney because it is essentially a 5f1 and Fender amps are imo top of the world for clean tones. Did I mention that the Laney takes pedals well. All you need is slight reverb and delay to make the amp sparkle. A blues driver will give it a natural overdriven sound. Always wondered what a 12” vintage 30 cab would sound like thru the amp???

Some of these amps can be modded to sound much better. Simple circuit caps/resistor changes and/or better speaker/cab. I settled on the VHT sp6 head, now modded. A super amp. And LOUD especially w a boost up front. For solid sounds i prefer 6v6 io el84. I think it's a better choice for a single ended amp. Can be quite ballsy. The Vox crunch sounded pretty good w the cathode follower if you like that sort of breakup

I prefer the 10” speakers for sure, tight full range, the 8’s sound boxy the 12’s get flabby. But the Career is a great tone machine. I personally wouldn’t want to actually gig with less than 15w and a 10” like a fender pro Jr. but for the studio, or home practice or quiet jams, Id grab the Career, the Vox, or the VHT. But I personally think a 10” speaker is the perfect size and compromise. The Vox shocked me. The Cub 8 can have its place in a mix everything can have its place in a mix recording, if its the right tone, thats what Id use. But for the price point of budget. The vox, it breaks up but thats what your volume knob on the guitar is for right? Breaking up early is good if your trying to stay low volume. Thanks good comparison. I still prefer 10” speakers and 15w for gigs, but for home and studio, I would probably grab the Vox. Or the career.

THIS is how comparisons should be done, nice work! :) The Vox was easily the most professional and best sounding to my ears, and the GA5 sounded just awful. The H&K amp had a nice "flat" modern tone, and the Career sounded like a slightly worse version of that to me. Laney was charming in an over-the-top vintage telephone sorta way, and the VHT was unremarkable until it totally killed it on the high gain.

My favourite here was the carreer but would never buy a new amp without comparing for myself. I have a Harleybenton GA5/valve junior head. It is horrible (brittle trebles and gutlessness allround) for guitar in original spec with any of my 12' speakers, so I was lazy and hooked it up to 1979 Goodmans 15AX Audiomax in a homemade wooden cabinet and play my bass guitars through it. It sounds passable in my 3x7metre music room.

Thanx for this. I have to say that the Vox sounds really good for all 3 scenarios, the VHT was great at clean and gain, but lacked in the middle test. The Career amp was great across the board. I would take the Career, closely followed by the VHT, and then the Vox. The other 3 amps didn't make the cut at all. I was particularly interested in the Laney Cub since Monoprice has this amp with their brand for a mere $120.00. I won't be buying it.

Thanks for the comments! I agree with your thoughts, but in defense of the Laney, it sounds WAY better thru an external cab with a 10 or 12" speaker. Killer thru the Orange 12" closed-back extension cab I have. The cool thing about the 8" version is that it's amazingly light - lighter than some other mini-heads (like the Tiny Terror) so it has at least a small speaker in there for practice, and if you gig somewhere that has a few cabs available, you just bring it along and connect it like a head. cheers, joe

Thanx again man. I need an amp for condominium living. So the smaller the speaker, the better. I just watched a review on Andertons of the Vox AC4 C1-12. They plugged in a 4x12 cab and the amp was just glorious. I just don't have space for a 4x12. I will say that I prefer EL84 tubes. The Laney has a 6V6GT if I am not mistaken.

Yes, the Laney uses 6V6, which is probably also why it comes across louder / breaks up later in the max volume. The AC4 C1 is my favorite of the batch with smaller speakers (10" version in the video) it simply had the most "character" in the tone - they hit the nail on the head even in the small package. The AC4 is staying! I got good deal on a used one, if you can grab that one, I say. cheers, joe

I would have also liked to hear an even heavier sound for the more metal type of music...tone is what counts but when buying an amp(even a smaller one) I would like to have a full gammet of sounds for my arsenal....I thought the vox and the career? sounded the best...at least as they were recorded...live may be different.

The Laney is a real little monster. It's so light and compact, that it's not much bigger than some standalone mini-heads.... I did plug it into an Orange closed-back 1x12" and LOOK OUT - serious volume and tone! One of my favorites of the bunch.

The 110 is just great. I picked one up after hearing the Cub 8 - it has a bit more lows without getting as heavy as the 112r - which is kind of the idea here - portability vs weight without sacrificing depth...

I love that little amp - I'm tracking almost everything I'm doing on a new record thru it. Just need a little dip around 500Hz in the EQ, since it's a tad "boxy" sounding with the small speaker, but otherwise it just rules. :)

I bought my Vox yesterday after watching this video (purple color). My only complaint is power transformer hum which may be due to imperfect wiring in my flat. Btw, do you hear any hum from power transformer itself?

  • @joedocmusic

Dmytro Morozov Mine is quiet, even when cranked pretty far. Naturally with single coils, I pick up either transformer hum if close to the side of the amp, or (especially bad) computer monitor hum.

Have you ever heard an ac4tv side by side with an ac4c1? The TV gets killed, it sounds like a radio compared to it's older sibling. So in some ways you are wrong, Vox IS beatable. But in the best of ways you are right, it can only be beat by another Vox lmao. :) Besides being a fellow Vox fan, I do think those VHT's are f***ing nice though. Good options. Best to keep open mind for best choice of sounds. Especially at this price, to me the only trully great Vox sound is an ac30 and that's mucho money.

I see why the VHT is set up a bit brighter on the low volume stuff . Its great cranked and made to sound better due to compensating for clipping of highs ! VHT is my fav. My 5 watt BadCat has a fx loop that is awesome for anologe delays.
