I mean, Oberyn actually beat The Mountain. If he wasn't a revenge filled dumbass he would have lived. He already had him on the floor and at his mercy.
One detail about the Mountain not a lot of people mention is how perceptive and precise the Mountain can be. In the books when the mountain kills the knight at the tourney, the hound mentions that the mountain had noticed how his opponent’s gourget wasn’t put on properly leaving his neck vulnerable and so deliberately aimed for the throat so he could kill him. Which is a pretty impressive feat I would say considering how hard a target the neck would be while ride a horse in a joust.
@calebbarnhouse496
10 күн бұрын
While it'd be a difficult target, it's important to remember that jousting has people aiming at a target not much larger then the neck, the impressive part of that feat would actually be tanking the lance and maintaining that neck, as the higher angle would mean that his lance would effectively be shortened, and so he'd be hit first even if just by a little bit
Jamie before he lost his hand could probably do it. He devoted his life to his sword. When he went against brianne he was hungry, sleep deprived and cuffed and she said she couldn’t imagine what he would be like at his best. She knew she would die under any other circumstance. I love the writing because we hear how badass he is but we never really see it.

I actually still think drogo could take the mountain because the reasoning this video gave was about gear. We don't know if drogo could use a spear or not. For all we know he may be fantastic with one and may be able to easily figure out the mountains weak points. If you take off the mountains armor then drogo wins for sure. If you take away weapons and armor than the mountain wins for sure. I think if you allow the mountain to have armor and drogo to do as he pleases it is more even but with the mountain probably winning in the end.

People need to remember that the mountain wields a great sword with one hand. In the book he carries a heavy oak shield. Add to that his armor is made thicker than the average man's. All because of his second greatest advantage which is his preposterous strength.
Oberyn Martell, one of the coolest characters in the show, did beat the mountain but was so focused on getting a confession that it cost him his head. Any attack from Gregor is basically fatal while it’s incredibly hard to get in a fatal attack on him so most opponents would have to dodge around him waiting for an opening and one mistake would lead to him getting a hit in and killing his opponent. Jamie is one of the few opponents who could manage to defeat him by dodging and hitting weak points but still there are many mistakes that would easily lead to his defeat. Jamie could end up close enough to be grabbed, dead. He could misjudge distance and be hit by Gregors massive blade, dead. He could miss one of the weak points in Gregors thick armor making his hit worthless, dead. Jamie could stand still within range a second too long, dead. Jamie could be blinded by the sun and miss an attack, dead. If any of those situations were to occur to Gregor the chances are big that he would just shrug off the attacks as his armor is a near impregnable fortress.

@@simonsalgueiro6217 It makes sense because those are the weapons the Dothraki use, the Dothraki do not use swords or spears in the books or show, nor do they use clubs. This is likely because the Dothraki never really had to fight people in full plate, so they don't have much experience with that, and the fact that they typically are on horseback. While the curved Arakhs they use would be horrible against armor on the feet, on horseback it'd do alot of damage against any heavy armor just due to the kinetic energy coming in on a horse. It would make very very little sense for Drogo to use a spear like Oberyn as it isn't a weapon he's trained with or has any experience with, not that spears take alot of time to learn, but it still wouldn't make much sense for a Dothraki to suddenly use them.

For a HEMA practitioner I'm surprised that you did not address: *Acceleration* , *Deceleration* , *Leverage* and *Weight* combined with *Momentum* In books, it's said that the Mountain wields a two-handed sword in one hand as a normal person wields a one-handed sword in one hand. In reality, we can't do this(wielding two hand sword in one hand as effectively as one hand sword in one hand) because of weight and leverage. That does not concerns Mountain. Now about the momentum and weight, Imagine having a hydraulic machine swinging two hand sword with high psi(pressure), an unarmored person would be cut in half, and the armored person would die due to his organs being devastated by kinetic/concussive force. I think that G.R.R.M got carried away when depicting Mountain prowess in terms of "balance patch".

Based on books, not show: 1.- Arthur Dayne (in GRRM words, strongests swordsman to ever appear in the books) 2.- Young Robert Baratheon (I guess 50-50) 3.- Jaime Lannister (much stronger in the books than in the show: in GRRM words, the most skilled swordsmen alive. Anyways, let's say a 50-50) 4.- Oberyn Martell (actually won, and would have survived and kill him if just finished the job instead of talking, even without poisson) 5.- Young Barriastan Selmy (almost as good as Arthur Dayne) 6.- Younger Victarion Greyjoy (he may stand a chance) 7.- Syrio Forel or any of the First Swords of Braavos (with a real sword, although they are not trained to fight full armored warriors, these guys are no joke, thus having a fair chance if they play the Oberyn game) 8.- Daemon Blackfyre (legendary warrior, seems to be the strongest Targaryen swordsman) 9.- Areoh Hotah (people forget this guy, but he butchered a white cape like if he was nothing, and wields a proper weapon for the job) Why Khal Drogo can't: dothraki use arakhs, designed to attack unarmed enemies from a horse. In ADWD (the 5th book), old Selmy kills a super strong arena warrior that fights with an arakh with no trouble thanks to his armor. Hence, Drogo would stand no chance against almost any professional knight. In "power levels" they would be something like: Dayne: 100 Daemon: 95-99 Selmy: 95-99 Robert: 90-95 Oberyn: 90-95 Jaimie: 90-95 The Mountain: 90-95 Hotah: 85-95 Victarion: 85-95 First Swords: 80-90 This is my guess

According to GoT movie series, I would say Drogo and Arthur Dane are the top fighters. A fast dothraki, let alone the slow Mountain, can't even touch Drogo in a fair fight, Drogo dodges every swing. How could the Mountain kill Drogo then, if he can't touch Oberyn until Oberyn gets distracted? I agree that Drogo doesn't have experience in dealing with armoured men, but that's a very weak argument, because the Mountain doesn't have experience to deal with someone like Drogo either, and it's not just about experience, he's not fast enough to beat Drogo, and Drogo isn't some dothraki, he is the dothraki. So I believe Drogo would beat the Mountain in any case hands down, let alone the case in which Drogo have fought some armoured men and learns about weak spots in an armour suit. If Drogo's weapon gets stuck or caught by the Mountain, like Jorah caught a dothraki sword, which is unlikely, the Mountain would still not be able to hit the untouchable man.
@AyusoEnjoyer

@@freeman9738 It may be like that, but I still would bet on the Mountain. In the books, Bronn, who is recognized as a very agile fighter, refuses to fight the Mountain arguing that he isn't just stupidly strong, but also faster than it would be reasonable for a man of that size. It's true that Oberyn could dodge every swing, but he was the peak of agility, more than used to deal with armoured warriors and held the best weapon for the task, which is not the case for Drogo. In the show Drogo was protrayed as a quite agile warrior, but in the books he is recognized by his sole strenght and brutality. Indeed, he died because was severely hurt by the arakh of another Khal, both in the books and show, which is a good argument against his defensive skills. Based on this, I doubt he would be able to either dodge every swing (one hit would mean death) nor outforce the Mountain, who is way stronger than the Khal, and yes, wears a super heavy armor. Also, in the books there is a fight between old Barristan Selmy in full plate armor and a recognized dothraki from the pits, who literally lived out of killing other warriors. That guy is described quite similarly to Drogo, and was easily dispatched by a retired knight because he was unable to penetrate Barristan's protections. Considering how realistic GRRM likes to be on this matters, I would expect him to choose the Mountain as winner in a hypothetical combat vs the Khal. But anyways this is is just my dumb opinion, so don't take it too seriously. Greets.

@@AyusoEnjoyer , I haven't read the books. But having watched the GoT movie series, I'd absolutely definitely bet on Drogo. According to GoT series, Bronn isn't among the best fighters nor the fastest. We see the Mountain is slow, no matter what Bronn says about him. Wee see Drogo dodging every swing of a fast unarmoured dothraki. We see Oberyn vs the Mountain, the Hound vs the Mountain, Drogo is as big as the Hound but probably stronger due to muscles, we see the Hound blocking the Mountain's swings. I rule out the possibility of the Mountain being able to hit Drogo, so even in the worst case Drogo wouldn't be able to kill the Mountain right away but eventually he'd figure out how to do that. If Drogo would have fought armoured men and gained experience by the time he fought the Mountain, then he'd kill the Mountain right away in a few seconds.
@AyusoEnjoyer

@@freeman9738 I think the main difference here is the source of reference. Now that you mention it, the Mountain has very few mentions nor screen time in the TV show, while in the books he is constantly mentioned and widely recognized by everyone as the fiercest and most feared warrior in the entire Seven Kingdoms. We also get to "see" him fight in the Green Fork (in the books Tyrion doesn't get stunned and can watch the Mountain doing his stuff). Something similar happens with Bronn: in the books we can "see" in Tyrion's thoughts that Bronn is an extremly skilled warrior, while in the show he just has a few combat scenes and none really relevant. The only reference about Drogo's battle skills that we have is the fight with Khal Ogo, where he is severily injured. If you take that scene in which Drogo dances around and brutally murders Mago and extrapolate that into the less realistic scenarios of the TV show he may be able to 1v1 the Mountain, but quite likely not in the books. In the books context we must consider too that dothrakis use to fight non-warriors, since they mostly raid villages and face other khalasars, where any adult male with an arakh is considered "a warrior". The Mountain is a guy who was trained in a castle since a very young age and then spent his entire life from battle to battle facing other armored knights (plus villagers). GRRM sticks ultra close to reality in the books in this kind of matters, despite these being a fiction story, and history shown that armours are unbeatable for an unarmored man, unless this one wields a specific weapon to break its defense (spear or hammer-like thing). KZread has plenty of videos showing this. Moreover, he puts a lot of enphasis in the importance of these, and we know that he loves punching people in he face with reality, so I would totally expect him to portray the Mountain tearing appart the almighty Khal just because, well, armours make a huge difference, and they do regadless of cool of a character you are (specially when your rival is Gregor Clegane).
I think a few lesser mentioned fighters who'd have a chance (not Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy, or a young Robert Baratheon) are the skillful Targaryen warriors who weilded Valyrion steel blades, like Aemon the Dragon Knight, and guys like Christon Cole, who not only was one of, if not the most skilled fighter of his era, but also had an anti-armor weapon like his Morningstar
Wonder how Robbert Baratheon in his prime vs the mountain would pan out. Wasn’t he something of a mountain himself
I agree! the red viper as you said is highly trained, studied war tactics and fighting styles at Harvard of Westeros. he was in exile and travelled globally in that world picking up fighting styles in the free cities, in the fighting pits as a gladiator, formed his own mercenary company and was a soldier in a mercenary company before forming his. he is highly educated and can wield many different weapons. Oberyn is as deadly as it gets and it took him years to get to that point before he stepped into that ring.

@@crushedscouter9522 true. That’s why I call him the Bruce Wayne/Batman of westoros. Batman went to fancy boarding schools, then took his family’s jet and traveled the world to visit and spend time with monks, trained in secret societies etc. Oberyn did all these things and learning many different cultures and fighting styles. Jamie Lannister, is considered the greatest most natural “swordsman” in the 7 kingdoms. every fight Oberon enters he chooses weapons based on the situation and advantages vs disadvantages. When he fought lord yarnwond when he slept with his side chick he chose based on the situation. The mountain, with his 8 foot height, and long reach with his arms and that great sword which gives him an even further reach that can hack a horse,s head off with one slash, Oberon chose that 8ft spear as tall as the mountain to keep him at bay. It had that pointy end for poking at joints and weak points. When it’s Robert he uses a war hammer and good at the melee but can’t jost or use anything other than that type of weapon really. Jamie and his sword, everybody and their swords or bow and arrow like Theon. But Oberon is the only person I noticed using multiple weapons with near perfection and many different fighting styles.
Very valid of you to point out that the mountain isn't just wearing full plate, he is wearing like super-plate. In the book the armor that's ordered for zombie-gregor is described as so heavy that no is strong enough to move in it, and if I remember correctly that's mentioned about normal gregor as well. He isn't a monster because he can cut a horse in half, he is a monster because he is a walking tank.
That would actually be a very entertaining fight to witness!

Oberynn really was one of the deadliest fighters in the entire story. With a steel shield and a poisoned spear he took the most feared warrior in the entire seven kingdoms apart. Only Jaime, Barristan, Sandor and perhaps a few dead men could've done the same. Bronn I reckon could've done it, he did similar things to the knight he put through the moon door, but not without significant risk.

The Mountain's weakness are never mentioned in videos like this. Apart from his gigantism, Gregor is also constantly suffering from a skull-splitting headache. This constantly keep him in a state of rage (emotions overtaking any logical thoughts). Oberyn didn't have to expend much energy to defeat him. Judging by this I would say Robert in his prime, Jaime, Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy or Brienne could have done the job. Robert especially would have made quick work of him with his hammer.

I think you're underselling Jon honestly. At least in the books, he's had a fair number of scenes where his strength seemed outright supernatural, such as lifting Thorne off the ground by his neck and needing to be pried off by the Eastwatch men, or when he yanked that spear that spear out of the frozen earth in ADWD. He commanded the other brother's to take down the rest, and they struggled with them and he instead told them to burn their heads. He made it seem effortless. Like he did it one-handed. It wasn't stated either way, but the way it was written gave me that feeling. I'd say Jon has fair odds.

In the books, in the fight between Gregor and Oberyn. The contest starts on a cloudy day, with no sun reaching the fighters. As the fight goes on, the clouds eventually move revealing the sun. Gregor is the first to notice, and puts the sun behind him. Tyrion then thinks, or comments that Gregor is dim. But within him, are the instincts of a warrior. Bronn's strategy works in principle. But getting Gregor to actually exhaust himself takes more than just hopping around until hes tired. At this point, Oberyn had known for almost 2 decades he would fight the mountain at some point. However without any truly notable fighters. Prime Robert Baratheon, Arthur Dayne, Barristan Selmy, Jaime Lannister, Grey Worm, Daario Naharis and Rhaegar Targaryen could all have a fair chance against him, while Oberyn Martell toyed with him and died due to rage and stupidity. Brienne and The Hound are close, but as stated they have similar fighting styles and in order to win plot armor usually gets employed as he is far stronger, wearing unreal armor due to inhuman strength even before the monstrosity the show made him into and absurd range. On another note it's interesting to see how many (show-only) replies underrate Jaime Lannister. It's clear from the books and GRRM's comments that he's an absolute prodigy, equal in skill to Barristan Selmy in his prime and Arthur Dayne (although without the magic sword) and extremely strong. Unfortunately in the show they use him to sell various other characters: 1) We were told but not shown that he cut through Stark forces and killed many skilled fighters before being taken down (he almost gets to Robb and Robb knows that would have meant his certain death) - if we saw this, we'd understand better how much of a prodigy he is before he is maimed 2) The show had Brienne outright defeat Jaime while in the books her internal monologue notes that she is barely able to fend off a manacled, starved version of him and nobody would be able to defeat him otherwise (and his internal monologue shows how impressed he is with her) 3) The show depicts his fight with Ned Stark as being roughly equal, where in the book he is playing with Ned and Ned knows it 4) Bronn's boast to Jaime that he would easily take him out even if he had both hands is show-only and laughable if you've read the books (Bronn is definitely a skilled and cunning veteran in the books, but he's never depicted to be the sort of fighter who can easily cut through people like the great fighters do) This does no favours to the story overall and Jaime's character in particular.

@@jamesgarretson2922 so yes the Mountain certainly has the advantage vs Bobby B in regards to physically and the fact that they most likely relied upon the same fighting traits. I’m no expert mid evil warfare historian but generally I think a war hammer would be more difficult to wield and could require greater skill. Thats my justification for my assumption that Robert could have defeated Gregor. A war hammer is specifically designed to puncture plate, it’s never specifically stated that the Mountain has the strongest or the heaviest plate due to its thickness alone. Instead it’s always stated that Gregor’s size makes his plate more cumbersome than any other human could withstand. Assuming both fighters are at an equal advantage, Roberts generally more intelligent than Gregor. He could easily have drawn the same conclusions as Bronn and Oberyn, circle him and use your shield when necessary until the Mountain tires out. Tyrion reflects that the Mountian has great combat instincts true enough, but still Oberyn being more intelligent and skilled still resulted in the Mountain’s defeat during Tyrion’s trial. Oberyn only got his head squashed as a result of his arrogance.

Bobby b weapon makes all the difference..with his immense size and strength swing that huge hammer all he has to do is land and it starts crushing his armor and breaking bones underneath..he doesn't have to find gaps or wait for misteps....the hammer is a pole weapon like oberyns but heavily weighted to smash.....the mountain would get his ass whoop
I don’t remember his name but there was the warrior that Ned stark said was the toughest he ever faced. He was the warrior protecting baby Jon Snow and his mother. He took on a young Ned stark plus 8 other men and downed all but Ned Stark

Podrick would destroy the mountain with his singing and bed skills. No question about it.
If Arya had her weapon from the winterfell battle, the segmented staff with something pointy on the end, do you think that would change her chances? Gives her reach and unpredictability. I know it's a show only thing, but still it might be possible she could use it as a spear and then quickly switch to the flail mode while maintaining distance to hit at armor joints. Edit: he would also probably not see much danger in a little girl until the first cut too. Then he may go berserk though.

I don't think its enough of a game changer for her but it would definitely help her live a little longer. Oberyn was without doubt one of the very best fighters in the world and had spent years planning his tactic for that duel and he just about eeked a win. In the book his spear is much longer too (showing just how dangerous he knew Gregors reach was) Aryas problem is getting past the armour. Getting into plate without heavy anti armour weapons like Bobby Bs hammer or a good mace makes it a game of hitting gaps, which against someone with as much reach and strength as Gregor is beyond a nightmare. Arya is my favourite character and I want to believe she can do it but its such a long short in most circumstances!thanks for watching! -Liam

I think for it to be possible she would have to never be struck at all; which would be very difficult as even she would eventually lose stamina. Even if she blocked or tried to parry, any blow coming from the mountain would break her staff or send her across the arena in two different directions if it struck home. That guy cleaved a horse's head clean-off in one stroke.

Peak Barristan Selmy. His feats: -Tried to enter a tourney at the age of 10 -Became a knight at the age of 16 after unhorsing Dunk. Dunk is quite the badass. -Trained by Arthur Dayne -Killed Maelys Blackfyre in single combat. Maelys was also the captain general of the golden company, touted as the best sellswords in the world, and got there by strength. -During the Defiance of Duskendale, Barristan snuck in on his own and killed everyone in his path. This included the castle's master at arms. He rescued Aerys II. -In his old age, he was still winning tourneys left and right. When he was 57, he beat the hound on Joffrey's 12th nameday.
People forget that the Mountain is a brutal killer. He seemingly lives to end lives, and has a terrifying amount of physicality backing it up. And GoT shows over and over that being a fan favorite doesn't matter in these moments.
3:20 The other issue is that an impaling strike to the eye isn't going to kill the undead-knight mode mountain, even if she could land it.
Assuming we are talking about the living mountain not the undead one....I think Drogo could beat him. He seemed very adept at dodging a smaller faster weapon so I believe he could effectively dodge that great sword...especially if mountain is in full plate. I think Drogo fight IQ is high enough that he wouldn't get his weapon caught in his armor and if for some reason he did he definitely wouldn't hold onto it instead of dodging. Then he would have to knock his helmet off and/or go for joints/weak points in the armor. Its a fight that could go either way but I still think Drogo is capable of pulling it off.

We think Drogo can, but we think Gregor would take it more often than not. Drogos biggest issue is reach, he'll have to work a hell of a lot harder to threaten the mountain whereas the mountain is presenting threat within a 6ft radius around him, not to mention his shield needs to be bypassed if drogo gets past the sword!
Do you agree with our list? 😬
At this point in the books, Sandor is the most dangerous man in Westeros 1v1. He's in his twenties, bigger than Brienne and almost as skilled as prime Jaime. He's so far above everyone else at this point it's not even fair. The only real challange to him now would probably be Hotah. Sir Robert Strong doesn't count.
Just remember the words of Stan Lee: The person who'd win in a fight is the person that the scriptwriter wants to win!
Part of the reason WOTW was so good was that Jon learned from his fight earlier when he got saved. Seeing him learn that fighting honorably was what lost him the fight, he did the opposite against the Magnar of the Thenns and didn’t hold back which is what won him the battle. Also, Jon has easily slain multiple white walkers who are easily just as strong if not stronger than the mountain. Maybe the armor does the difference, but I’d think Jon would have a chance more or less.
Hodor, with Bran at the controls. That beats the Mountain every time.

@@TheFandomeClips Nah, Bronn is more skilled in the books, Tyrion even compares him to his brother Jaime.
Agreed for all. I have no doubts Drogo has the best odds but he’d obviously need to get some experience against heavy-armored opponents. He’s easily got the skill and speed, and probably enough strength to parry blows from the Mountain (which is extremely rare in the lore). But his lack of armor and his inferior weaponry are a problem.
I like to think Drogo world be smart enough to come prepared with a more suitable weapon of he knew the fight was going to take place, having seen how ineffective his standard weapons are against plate armour. ... Of course the question then becomes whether he would have the required skill to wield such a weapon.

We were robbed of that one by Ellaria's assassination plot.
Maybe Arthur Dayne in his prime could take the mountain with a pole arm like a halberd but that's a big maybe. Always confused me when people said Drogo could take the mountain since Jorah proved that Dothraki don't know a good way to fight people in full armor, Nobody is beating the mountain in brute strength especially when he's armored. The whole reason he was the richest family in Westeros' preferred champion was that he's a giant battle hardened sociopath. There's a scene in clash of kings where the mountain's horse gets shot out from under him and he falls into a group of stark soldiers and proceeds to butcher his way through all of them despite their best efforts to kill him, all of this seen through Tyrion's POV and he isn't concerned the mountain is in any danger.

i dont think its a maybe, it would be probably a clear cut win for arthur, the thing is you cant compare the khal to a regular dothraki, drogo is more calculated and more skilled than them, i do think drogo can defeat the mountain, there are other weak spots than the visor, oberyn exploited a few of these, the back of the knee etc.

@@sanjaysanj5603 I agree Arthur would likely beat the mountain in a straight forward 1v1 since he's said to be the greatest swordsman Westeros ever saw that's why I picked him but nothings written in stone and despite what the show portrays the mountain is a competent fighter not just a brute frothing at the mouth. I just can't get behind Drogo clapping the mountain, he's never fought anybody like the mountain whereas the mountain killed a fighter who was probably faster than Drogo and more used to fighting armored opponents. I know Oberyn got wrapped up in emotion and got taken by surprise but the fact the mountain still killed him is proof enough he has some speed. Like the video said all of Drogo's weapons would force him to be right next to the mountain and Drogo is described as a very large man so unless he can teleport the mountain is probably gonna grab him, overpower him and despite whatever wounds he's suffered and give him some medieval eye surgery too.

For a regular person to take on the mountain that person must quite literally be the best spear fighter in the world.

I actually think Drogo would be the perfect candidate to beat the Mountain. He’s ridiculously fast and strong, capable of getting under or out of Clegane’s reach with relative ease and energy. The greatsword is a clumsy enough weapon that even Gregor’s surprising speed cannot overcome the fact that he has to laboriously signal where he’s headed. It really comes down to whether you think Drogo would slip up first/the Mountain would get lucky with a swing before the Khal’s own agility makes itself felt against a recoiling Mountain.
@TheFandomeClips

I think Drogos biggest issue is that armour, his weapons and fighting style (well what we see in the show) are not optimised to deal with an opponent in plate armour, let alone armour as thick as the Mountains. Make them both fight unarmoured and the Khal (assuming he doesn't arrogantly charge at the mountain) would likely have Gregors guts in his hands after about 5 seconds 😂 thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts warlord! -Liam
