For those of you don't know where Erewhon Grocers is, there are several of the in Los Angeles, CA. The prices are a joke. I have seen $37.00 for 8oz basket of berries, and 1/2 gallon of milk from $14.00 to $18.00. It's a poshy place to see celebrities shop. Just go to Whole foods for 1/2 the price or Costco for 1/4 price. 😂

Costco chicken is like the $1.50 hotdogs... they lose money on them, but it's one of the things that gets people in the store. The chicken is also located all the way in the back so you can browse more items as you go get it.

I don't know if losing money is entirely correct...more like they don't profit from it. They own their own chicken farms and processing factories and from what I understand mechanized much of the processing meaning they need less employees to operate. All combined it keeps the cost low so the raw chicken they sell in bulk likely completely covers the low cost of the rotisserie chickens.

@@Iampatrix Yup, like you said, they don’t make a profit, but they also don’t break even. Think about it. Their cheapest RAW chicken costs like $2/lb. This is a 3 lb chicken for $5, coming out to $1.67/lb. Then you need to think about the labor and extra effort (ovens, spices, packaging, floor space that could be dedicated to selling different items) to cook the chickens.

Well, most of the chicken in the supermarkets are like that. But, most roasted chickens are marinated. If you marinate it for a long time, around 8 to 12 hours, the chicken would be more juicy and not dry.

They pump the Costco chicken full of saline solution so that it is juicy, so it's extra salty and oily and bad for health. I stopped buying it. I don't need to be a cheap skate.
Always interesting to me that a raw whole chicken is more expensive than buying the rotisserie ones.

Probably because they bake the extra raw whole chickens before they expire. So they're basically turning loss to some profit.

Ok this was unexpected. Here in Mexico's Costco the chicken is also $100 pesos (around 5 US dollars) I though it was more expensive in the US. Costco has the best deals ever

It's one of the most convenient and affordable meals available, and a lot healthier than many fast food options.
