#5 USC vs. #17 Notre Dame - 1995

Спорт

There was good news and bad news for the Trojans. The good news was this was the last year of Notre Dame's record long 13 year undefeated streak in the series. The bad news was the Fighting Irish rolled Southern Cal.

This was my first game to see at ND.Everything went perfect ! Checkout John Robinson with the mitts on as well as their players with the almost full length jackets on.The chill factor was 28 degrees ! I got to meet Ron powlus at the signature inn after the game where his parents were staying. This trip was a DREAM come true due to my late Uncle Tom Carter who played under Leahy.I have seen every ND game vs usc from 1964 to 2002 I believe, all because of him getting tickets.ND was everything and MORE that I expected.I could hear the hit that Kinnom Tatum put on the rb.I sat on ND side on the 40 yd line and just behind the old green chairs.I stood the whole game! This was a top 5 on the bucket list.

Great story, I try and get out there every other year at least, was at Boston college blowout in 2022 in blizzard conditions. I remember this game well.. Notre Dame had tough linebackers then..like Kinnon Tatum, Lyron Cobbons, and Reynoldo Wynn.. kicked their asses up and down the field this game..

I remember the Tatum hit against USC and how small Keyshawn and his soft USC team came up in this game.. this was a weird year of could haves for ND.. lost in excruciating fashion to Northwestern and then blew a lead against a more talented Ohio state squad later in the year.. losing by double digits.. but they also beat Army on a goal line stand and a good Washington team on the road..along with Texas at home.. strange year that will live in my mind forever..

I am a huge notre dame fan but I would say from a football stand point he should have gone someplace else. He was a classic drop back quarterback with below average mobility. Just not a good fit for that system. I know he was rated extremely high coming out of high school but im not sure why Lou went for that style of QB. Just didn't fit his offense

A few things to say here to give perspective.. first and foremost Holtz tried to use a conventional passer which wasn’t his strong suit.. If they were able to land Tommy Frazier, that would have been a game changer.. secondly Powlus lost something after his clavicle injury it appeared and was under immense pressure thanks to Beano Cook and the other ESPN morons predicting greatness.. many of us bought into it too. Another reason for the slide is due to the lack of game breakers on the mid 90 teams. The loss of Randy Moss from 95 class really hurt and they could not stretch the field vertically with guys like Malcom Johnson and Bobby brown. Autry Denison was an above average runner and tremendous leader and had tons of heart.. but they had no backs that could go the distance and the loss of ACE recruiter Vinnie Cerratto really affected their top end talent that they used to get in the late 80’s.😢

These USC teams were absolutely horrific to watch. I was a born in 1993 so when i started to watch SC play it was during their awful years in the 90's when they seemingly lost to everyone but I think we could blame all that on bad coaching because we should have hired Barry Alvarez away fro ND before he went to Wisconsin I mean imagine what could have been every year Holtz vs Alvarez in the Big Game it would have been awesome

@Marcus Walker it was because back then their offensive line was GREAT. They were well coached, handled the the teams and just wore them down. Now they’re weak and undisciplined. Every game they’re good for at least a half dozen false starts or more. They get pushed around all the time. Back in the day, they were the ones pushing guys around. Hell, they get pushed around by Navy and their defensive line has to average at least 40 lbs. They don’t have one guy over 300 lbs and some that are only 250 or 260 and they’re pushing around ND guys who are 320+. Poor coaching if you ask me.

I went to S. Bend for this game... was about 29 degrees with freezing rain at game time with a 25-30 mph wind. So cold I didn't care about the game after I lost complete feeling in my body by half time. Shortly after this game, I don't know specifically when) USC started scheduling this game (when played at ND) in early Oct and not in November. Smart move as the cold was hard for USC players to contend with. They don't show in this video the three no pass interference calls against K Johnson in the end zone.. which would not have changed the final winner of the game but would show how hard it can be to win at ND stadium. We can thank Larry Smith for the decline in USC football evident in this video.

My, oh my!! Who could ever forget, the forgettable performance of "Me"shawn Johnson.... oh, I'm sorry, folks... I truly meant Keyshawn. As I seem to recall him, during the week leading up to the game he ran his mouth (which was pretty customary for him during these days) saying, "These boys won't be able to cover me". Well, "Me", seems like these "boys" did a really good job covering your ass. Your only TD was after a missed tackle... a play in which that "boy" still had you pretty well covered. I don't even think "Me" broke 100 yards in this game. But, these "boys" weren't going to be able to cover him. LOSE ON, USC!!!
