5 Tips How to Decrease Tantrums

I'm a speech-language pathologist specializing in working with toddlers with special needs. As you can imagine may day is full of several toddler tantrum episodes. Over the past ten years I have used these three main tips to help decrease toddler tantrums over time. Of course, these tips are not for everyone and you should defer to a child psychologist or behavior specialist.

You seem so elegant and confident! I hope i can get to that level one day! My ultimate goal one day is to be less hot headed and elegant. And you seem to really know how to pick your battles, its hard to resist all the battles

I love love love your channel! I'm raising a toddler with a Mixed Expressive Receptive Language Disorder. He just started speech therapy two weeks ago so we are still at the very beginning of this journey. Can you offer some advice to teach sign language to a child who doesn't want to participate? Help! 😁

I have a grandson that throws tantrums where he throws himself around on the floor and he seems to pretend to cry but he has no tears on his face. It seems that trying to engage with him increases the frequency of his Tantrums. So then we tried backing that off to ignoring him when he throws a fit, as a means to reverse what appears to be a conditioned behavior. But the first step, as soon as he starts stepping into a tantrum, we immediately pick him up and put him on the couch for a timeout. And he continues to cry without tears. And, he will scream loudly, and seemingly wait for somebody to give him some attention, and if that doesn't work he screams even louder. It's also funny to notice that, mid-tantrum, he will stop crying because he gets distracted by something he sees, maybe on TV or something else happening around him, but as soon as we engage with him again to show him that his now regulated behavior is acceptable, it seems like he realizes he forgot he was supposed to be throwing a fit and he starts it back up again. This can happen many times a day. And on some days he does it every couple of hours.

My daughter throws the biggest tantrums when we have to leave an event. We go to a few different toddler activities during the week (this is Farley new), she does fantastic when we are there. I ended up having to carry her out in one arm and had her little brother in the stroller. It seems she may have a problem transitioning. How do I make the leaving part easier for her?

My 2.5 year old is also doing this. I have tried to give her a count down to when we have to leave but she always does this. It's so distressing to watch, sometimes I don't feel like taking her out but I end up taking her and dreading having to go home. 😣

I have the same issue too. I end up having to walk off and he will get scared and then come after me but will scream and yell the whole time. It draws a lot of attention to us and it is embarrassing I hope I can help him with transitioning too!

What would you do when are outside? My kid (17 month old) usually throws himself on the floor and kicks and cry uncontrollably. How can I "not watch the show"? Also sometimes he tries to hit his head with the floor, how can ignore this? I don't want him getting hurt

Nabanita Sinha Thanks for your question. How I handle screaming is similar to how I handle aggressive behaviors. Here’s the video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/io6gqsyHgrm1YrA.html. Basically, give the screaming little to no attention, and then give and example of what you want them to do instead of screaming, like “soft voice!” Or “Say yay!” Or “say look Mom!” Depends on why you think he is screaming. When he copies your soft voice then reward with a high five or a hug or something. This usually breaks the habit in a week or so.

Behavioral children absolutely can have tantrums such as these without having autism. Think about those children in the grocery stores you hear screaming bloody murder for mommy or daddy not buying the toy or candy they wanted. I used to be one of those children myself and no autism here.
