@@jmacdizzle2070 Not a bad idea to try the plastic curbs. I think the problem you might run into is the curbs moving when trying to skate them, if you can mount the plastic curbs down that’ll help. Also they’ll probably slide/grind much different then concrete. But could be a fun trail!

I'm so stoked for this.. I'm 32 and my daughter is 3 and I quit skating regularly maybe a couple yrs before she was born.. but have always had a board and never really stopped riding. Just last week I put together a good set up for her (and mommy wants to try to learn too) and immediately on the carpet in grandma's living room my daughter jumped on it and started acting like she was doing manuals and dropping in and went for a nosegrab and stuff all without me suggesting anything. Started at 43 (now 45) and I found myself getting frustrated when I couldn't do things and I wanted to progress faster. I think the minute I accepted that skateboarding is really hard and takes years to get good at gave me a whole new perspective. I now enjoy every session I have even if I don't progress or I can't do the thing I did last time. Skating makes me feel good and smile and is making me fitter and stronger so for those reasons I love it. I also found that skating new parks makes you so much better riding over new transitions, banks and hips really develops your abilities. Also knowing when to not go skating to give your body a break really helps me.

I'm 42. Left LCL has been twanging for over a decade now, so knee supports are a must. Up your fruit and veg intake, decrease the plainly-just-eating-crap. Start checking out yoga and don't dodge it, it's cheaper than codeine... Though differentiate between dynamic stretches before a session and static stretches to warm down (or any other time - just not before a sesh, they can mess with your skating even though you'll feel relaxed..!) Early morning sessions if I can do it, but I'm way less functional/ awake then. Days off in the week during school hours can be amazing for hitting skateparks. Lots of water in my bag and a very basic first aid kit including over the counter anti-inflammatories to stop any swelling asap. Probably loads more stuff I forgot..!

Now when i started again riding was no problem and felt really confident back on a skateboard, so i could try some ollies right from the start. My progression was insane the first 6 months. Didn't skate much park this year cuz of work and all. But i'm lucky because i can skate flatground in my backyard. When i work at home i sometimes just take a break to skate 15 min. and try a few tricks and go back to work. The tip about going early in the morning is a golden, think imma start with that soon! Another great video, Zack! I'll be 35 at the end of this year, and one of the best things I did to keep skating was purchasing a Keen ramp quarter pipe about 4 years ago. It stores super easy in the garage, and I roll it out 3-4 times a week to the sidewalk and have a good 30-60 minute session. As you said in this video, the ability to have a private session without having to worry about anything else has really helped, and I would say I've progressed more these last 2-3 years, than when I was skating as a teenager. I also just bought a parking block and am learning slappys. It's just about having fun, and enjoying the process of learning something new. Keep the videos coming!

Fast approaching 47! 😬 My best tip is to know yourself. Skating can really bring out the best in us, but also the worst in us if we are not in tune with ourselves. Sometimes you need a bro skate, sometimes you need to session a new feature, sometimes you are working on a trick, sometimes you've just got to push and go fast! Don't set your expectations too high. If you understand what your body and mind needs, you will always find enjoyment.

Very useful tips! I am not in my 30s but I will do in a couple of years, and I can only say that skateboarding will continue to be fun as long as I adapt to my age. The older we get, the careful we have to be. We have to eat healthy, prepare our body to the activity, rest, and of course, focus on other things rather than skate only! And, this is something we should be doing since day 1, no matter if you are 13 years old! We should take this sport serious just as in other sports were you take care of yourself before-after doing it :)

Had my first session today on my Christmas complete after a 10+ year break from skating (I’m 31). I warmed up with a bike ride to get loose. Got to the park at 10 am no1 there yay. Started by just rolling around doing Ollie’s and mannys just getting a feel for the new board (chocolate). I forgot how grippy new mob feels. About 10 minutes in i started to feel a lot more comfortable and warm (38 degrees). I was able to get some fs and bs 180’s on the hips. Then moved to a small box that I could only fs 50. I was happy with that tho and didn’t want to push my luck on the first day back. Ended the session doing rock to fakies and kick turns on the mini ramp. I could tell after I haven’t used my muscles like that in a while and I’m a little sore but I feel good. Super stoked to get back into this. Good luck my fellow rippers !

Honestly, I'm days away from turning 37 and must say, the big thing is just to not quit. I'm very much a beginner actually, but even for me skateboarding is very rewarding (yes, in almost that childish way) when you start to land new stuff. And that's probably key to sticking with it. Find enough tricks you can learn fairly easily first, then continue with harder stuff, so progress is gradual and you're able to stick with it. Also, don't rule out the possibility of you ever learning certain (hard) tricks, as that genuinely makes no sense.

Along with my solid tricks, I have others in various stages of learning/landing that I try. I progress, but it's a painfully slow process sometimes. Stretch, drink water, know a good chiropractor, and listen to your body.

I skate at 43 but I look like I'm 30ish. But I grew up skating from the late 80s until 98. Started up again over a year ago in Seattle. We have mad places to skate thanks to Monk. But you are still young, you could skate until you're 60. From 30s to 40s things don't change that much. I feel like I'm 30 still for sure. You're time on a skateboard isn't as limited as you think, and you're not as old as you think. Thats a compliment btw. Id never seen you skate washington st, that was rad.

Nothing super heavy though, I don’t wanna be a body builder I just wanna be able to handle my own weight for the most part. I also sit in the sauna a lot post work out, it’s low key my favorite part of the gym. I do very little cardio cause I view skating as my cardio/plyo. At this point in my life I feel like the gym is really the most important thing aside from food & sleep, it helps so much when you get smoked.

    39. Had to get a full hip replacement at 30. At 36, the thing started squeaking very loudly every time I took a step. Had to have it redone. When I saw an Instagram post from a friend earlier this year with photos of a brand new concrete park in my town I decided I had to take advantage of what time I had left to ride. My natural hip is worse than my other hip was when I had it replaced, and I don’t care. I can live with the pain well enough. I found that I really had to lower my personal expectations in order to avoid frustration. That was the hardest part for me, but I pretty much put into practice everything you listed here. So I didn’t learn any new tidbits, but you really nailed the checklist. Zack, if you ever happen to see this, I gotta know: Did you ever work with or interact with Dave Carnie? He’s my favorite writer, and a personal hero, and I’m just curious. Great video.

I'm 37.. havent touched a skateboard since I was 23. Had both my Achilles tendons torn in half at work and just haven't had the guts to get back at it. I have two kids now 5 and 10 and I'm a single dad and they want to try skating. But they want me to do it with them. Just picked up a couple boards used ones for now. But man I am nervous it's been so long and I had to relearn how to walk after the accident at work. But I gotta do this. Any advice for getting over the hurdle of messed up ankles?

I need to do more early sessions. I work at 6am but on my days off I just wanna sleep in. By the time I'm up and feel like skating its 2 and the kids are getting out of skool. My garage is getting boring so i need to break that and get to the park. I'm burning myself out in the backyard/garage

Skated in my teens, picked it up when i turned 30, 34 now. Built a micro ramp in my garage (learned a lot of new tricks here), early morning solo sessions at the park + wednesday night oldboys sessions :) Staying in good shape (injury prevention exercises) + a reasonably good diet is key.

I’m just now starting to skate at 38yrs. How many hours a week would you recommend to improve? I’m only able to squeeze in about 2-4 hours a week at the moment. Just cruising on my board and trying to learn. (Keeping in mine, I’m a absolute beginner)

Just got back into skating at 31, i don't know what the fuck happened but it's like when you hit 30 everything just changes, start gaining weight, hurting, etc. I'm thinking skating is gonna help out a lot with my health before it gets out of control. I definitely see how that happens now.

I'm not maintaining I'm building up in my 30s. Its allot harden, more punishing, and sometimes I feel like I have to approach a new trick differently or maybe not at all. I had ollies, didn't skate in my 20s, big regrets.

If you are starting to skate or getting back into it , I strongly suggest to learn how to fall or practice falling/rolling a couples times to get muscles memory back .. may sound stupid but that could save you an injury ... talking from experience x) My back truck got stuck after I ollied on a box but I tried to stop myself from hitting the ground too hard with my hands instead of rolling on the ground like parkour kids . I ended up injuring my elbow pretty bad .... that was a week ago ... I wont be skating for another week or two .. :(

  • @ZackDowdy

    @ZackDowdy

Yes! Bigger feet you'll want a wider board, for heavy weight you'll want tighter trucks. My friend Al is around 6"3 and he skates a 8.5 wide board at the skinniest.

Actually how did this not become an add for OBT products? Have you tried skating with them? Even the kids are wearing them now ha ha ha cool park too!! Wow!

Yeah man I’m in my 40’s and almost ran over some little girl on a scooter. I dropped in and told the kids here I go. She came in and crossed in front fo me and I almost ran her over. Needless to say another parent wasn’t happy when I sternly told her in Dad voice No you dont go in when someone else Nik already gone in. Ughh it’s a challenge as these parent dont always know skate park rules and you aren’t their parent but they need to known for their own safety. Yes yo u have to be mindful to skate in later years. Yeah I need to walk or something.Gym fools talk to much for yoiu to get a decent workout in. Good advice Zach!!
