5 TIPS for getting into ROLLERBLADING in your 30's // Rollerblading Tips

With so many people getting back into rollerblading during the quarantine, I thought I'd share a few tips that I picked up along the way during my journey back into skating for the last year and a half.
It's been awesome seeing so many people get back into the sport that's done so much for me, I hope that these tips are able to help you along as you start back up!

Awesome tips and advice Matt! I'm in my mid 40's and it's been such a great feeling skating again! My advice for anyone who is interested in getting back or simply learning is to take it easy and slow and just skate as much as you can. Don't do too much though. I started with 15 to 30 min sessions and slowly built my time and distance up. Once you start developing and conditioning those muscles for skating it becomes easier and a lot of fun!

Solid tips. Regarding #5, yeah... I remember my first day back on skates, three years ago... putting those cheap rec skates on, rolling out my apartment complex's driveway, and thinking to myself "this is SUCH a bad idea right now!" I turned right back around, and discovered that my apartment complex had everything I'd need to practice the fundamentals in a MUCH safer environment before I break myself on the outside world, including a 950-foot stretch of smooth, ever-so-gently inclined asphalt in the back of the parking lot. I spent countless hours there, cruising back and forth, practicing turning and stopping until I had the confidence to roll where I wanted. It didn't hurt that the apartment management and my neighbors were very supportive and encouraging as they saw me progress from clumsy to confident. And I'm just as padded up as you, most of the time. If I'm at the skatepark, I got the knee pads, wrist guards, helmet and crash pads all on. Maybe I'll just wear wrist guards and a helmet if I'm just freestyling with the Mrs, but for aggressive, it's especially important to pad up. Just celebrated my 38th birthday today, actually. Skating has changed the way my wife and I see the world. We don't just see parking lots or sidewalks, we see new potential places to roll. Stay safe out there!

Ah, one of the smart ones! I’ve seen so many people show up at skateparks without ANY fundamentals down and they try to go too big too fast and end up injured and out of the sport. I do the same thing when I’m out around town now, every curb or stair set turns into something I want to conquer haha Happy birthday! Hope it is/was as cool as it can be during these wild times!

We came back to blading last year and brought our kids in :) Great advice in the video. Stretching needed, pads help a lot :) One more thing: if you have been skating for a while, even 20 years ago, you will just jump on skates and get going :) It is like riding a bicycle. Just your muscles might be lagging behind a bit. Give it a try :)

For a beginner the 'get there early' thing is a top tip. I remember hitting trails and paths at 7am so as to avoid looking like a flailing goofball. Persist through that initial awkward stage though and the long-term payoffs are massive.

Coming from someone who has skateboarded my whole life but am getting back into rollerblading, there is WAY more spots and creative ways to use spots! Rollerblading is also a lot quieter and you look more harmless, I skates an amazing collage a couple weeks ago with students and teachers there with my girlfriend and nobody batted an eye at us. Skateboarding is so fucking loud with the hard wheels and snap of the tail you can literally hear people skating from across a campus and before your warmed up your kicked out! You can cruise around on stealth mode and when someone rolls up just hang out and stop grinding shit for a few minutes and your good especially with a girl or kid with you, you just look like a cool couple having fun together not a crazy gang of "skaters" there to break bones and property.

As someone who did skateboarding for all my life and switched to aggressive I noticed that on blades I actually spend more time doing the lines with smooth transitions from one trick to another where’s in skateboarding I spent more time on countless attempts to land a trick and just walking or rolling back to starting position.

On the topic of pads and safety gear I wanted to say - I'm only 36. I ate a curb on my bicycle last year and broke two ribs. I was working a job where i could not take a single day off without it's being a large problem. The healing process took over 4 months and it was a very physically intensive job. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done just to keep working and I re-broke one of the fractures twice in the effort. When you have a bad injury doing something cool in highschool it's sometimes just cool. Scores you points. When you have to let down the boss who's helping you pay a mortgage it's not so much.

Thanks for making a great video! I have some of my own to add: A few years ago in my late 20s, my ambition got the better of me on an attempted soul grind and I smashed my elbow up. Work on tricks and stalls you already kind of know how to do to the point of trivialized insanity. Soul stalling on a curb? Do it over and over and over again. Do it until you aren't even thinking about it. Don't try to do something you used to know how to do until you STRONGLY re-acquaint yourself with the basics. Menthol roll on, epsom salt foot soaks/baths, and the occasional tylenol are amazing old man tools to utilize, even when you dont feel like you necessarily need them. Therapeutics are important for ongoing endurance, comfort, and skill improvement. Hydrate like crazy! Your joints and ligaments are gonna be tested. Im starting to have some ankle and knee problems after only a few months of going hard lately. For that matter, getting into the solid habit of keeping knees bent when moving and especially landing is crucial. No stiff/locked legs or you will haaaaate it later. Don't forget your core / abdominal muscles when stretching and warming up! I do some light yoga before getting out there and focus on my core, hips, legs and ankles. Reminding folks how to push and move correctly also felt missing from this video. Maybe obvious to most, but it's been so long for me I had all but forgotten what natural movement is supposed to feel like. Left hand forward and out (palm up best imo) when pushing off right foot and vice versa. Contralateral movements.

Dude, great tips. I've seen too many videos of guys in their 30s going right into grinds without really being able to actually skate. It's important to get your basics back. Sometimes I just go out and skate a parking lot and practice backwards crossovers and going normal to fakie to get it looking good. At 39, I love trying to get back to aggressive skating and am also enjoying cruising around on 80mm wheels. Now, you have me wanting to try a 90mm set up. I'm still on the fence on the larger 3 wheel setups.

More important than whether you should stretch is what kinds of stretches you should do and when. I still see a lot of people warm up with static stretches, which are best saved for the end of a workout because they calm your muscles down. Dynamic stretches are probably the best way to warm up before an activity (although I think you should still ramp up gradually during your session).

29 here, back to ski and skates for a year now (quitting riding is to date my only regret !! haha why did I stopped for 6-8 years ? stupid !), I'd say always warm up (when your used to it you can do it while skating, taking it easy and gradually increasing the pace), take a habit of stretching all your body almost everyday, take a habit of training 2-3 times a week (not necessarily weight lifting, but something to work on muscle strenght is super important because your muscles will absorb more impact and it will prevent a lot of articular pain, I have an hernia, I still ride 3 times a week with hardcore intensity and my back doesnt hurt at all :) I always have my helmet and my wristguards, they are the most important, understand that if you plan on pushing near your limit it equates to planning to fall (its normal since its an extreme sport hahaha) wear all the protective gear you think you might need. Lastly, learn to listen and respect your body, if it hurts a lot, stop ! and come back to it step by step. Secret thing not enough people tells you : understand that you can (kinda) roll on grass, dont be shy to just get the F out of the road and roll on grass, its gonna slow you down and well, there aint suppose to be any car there !

You really want to remove that railing from your driveway, it’s obviously getting in your way, and will cause injury. A few comments from a 56 year old skater. There are two kinds of stretching. The first kind activates or warms up muscles. Without this you could hurt yourself as cold muscles don’t work too well. I just do simple skating drills at the start of each session. The second kind aims to lengthen muscles, ligaments and tendons, thereby making you more flexible. I do this after skating, not before as it destroys my skating ability. Flexibility is key, for obvious reasons. Pads: well said. 👍🏻 Turn up early: I used to turn up early, but now for some reason everyone turns up early, so I might in future turn up late to avoid the crowds.

I am 32 and I used to skate in skinny jeans on top of padded shorts with knee guards and I looked plain stupid (yet very safe) compared to all the cool kids in the skatepark. So I’ve got some wide 90s style pants and oversized sweatshirt and no one actually knows that I am all padded 😂 all they see are the cool helmet and wrist guards (the only thing that still looks stupid)😅 boy how many sessions were saved thanks to all the protective gear! Wear it, but don’t forget to look cool 😎

I got a pair of inlines after going to the rink a few times. The first time at a rink in them I sprained my ankle lol. Being so tightly strapped into my boot saved me from shattering my ankle I think. I had wrist guards on though, and my wrists are fine. I'm 3 months out and walking pretty good, not ready to skate yet, but I'll be skipping the rink

I'm am 30, skated as a child into my late teens, got back into it with my kids, I hit the quarter pipes and half pipes, just having trouble airing a pipe, though I definitely get more than enough speed, also trouble curving a bowl as I do get mad speed, and I have yet to attempt any grinding, scared of slipping and smacking the rail/ledge.

I found myself taking a page out of my old high school track days. Basically, being mindful of the workload over a long period of time; focusing on long term consistency vs killing myself in the moment. As we get older, it's hard on the systems to go do those balls to the wall sessions every day like we were younger. Say today I spend a lot of time jumping up to a rail, if I skate again tomorrow, I'll give those muscles a break and work on something else. It's not smart to go out there and give 110% every session, that'll lead to injury (not from falling, but like tendonitis and pulled muscles). So, like a distance athlete, the majority of sessions are "easy days" and we'll throw a harder session in on "workout Wednesday" or something similar. Side note, the idea of "workout Wednesday" gave birth to something I call "fakie Friday". It's basically a session where I specifically work on fakie skills. It could be zero spin grinds, spins to or from fakie, basically anything that has you skating fakie on entry or landing. I know a lot of people don't like to think of skating in this sort of structured way, but as I've gotten older it's helped me to have a goal for the day. Instead of just showing up and trying to do everything every time like when I was younger. Loved the vid, great tips.

I didn’t even know you can still get crash pads these days. My friend had a pair before. We would wear wrist guards, knee pads, and shin guards. I boiled them down over time to where I would maybe put on a shin guard when skating rails.

Stretching is key. Before, during, and after. Stretching and having good boots with my feet strapped in kept me from doing more than spraining my ankle. Having wrist guards on certainly helped after I landed from flying over some ladies that fell in front of me🤣🤣

Took a pretty big fall down a hill the other day (first ever attempt going downhill), luckily it wasn't as bad as I wore hand and knee padding. I slid about 4m, falling kinda backwards on all of my pads. Not a scratch but hella scary.

However I want to feel more grounded and stable and would like your opinion on whether I should choose 80mm or 90mm wheels. I have general flat areas around us etc and my preference is 80mm but what do you think? Thanks Tim

I’m 58 and trying to get back into skating after an 8 year layoff. With all that’s going on now, I pulled out my 10 yr old skates only to find the ratchet straps broke. I tried to find some new skates online (no shops near me) and it seems that everyone is sold out of the Powerslide’s I want. There’s huge shipping delays either because of the virus or everyone’s taking it back up again. The straps I ordered are coming from China and are weeks away.

I'm 30 and wanting to get back in, last I skated was 2003, when I get a job and got enough money saved up. Gonna pad up as much as possible cause most of my work history, and the work I look for, is manual labor. Can't have a sprained ankle, bruised elbow, or concussion doing manual labor. Maybe at a desk job, but definitely not in manual labor. What I tell people is at least wear a helmet. A head bonk from even just standing height still has a chance at causing a life-altering or life-ending head injury. ALWAYS protect your head, people.

Stretching wise, you should do Dynamic stretches before and static stretches after... Dynamic is a stretch that's a movement, like kicking your leg up infront of you to it's limit so you feel the stretch for a split second, essentially they're exercises rather than holds. Reason for that being before a workout is because if you hold stretches before, you actually stretch tendons/ligaments etc. which can lead to them not supporting joints as well which can cause injury.

I just got a pair of skates, and the first time I put them on two days ago, I noticed my legs shaking any time I was moving. It was confusing to me. I think it was partly from the skates being a size too big (like my feet micro-adjusting to help me balance). ...But maybe also from nerves. And unused muscles. I hadn't worn a pair of skates for over a decade. ...and never had learned how to stop properly... I wasn't nearly as shaky when I tried them on a hard wood floor yesterday with an extra sock stuffed inside each boot.
