    you can do a full soak in the soda ash, you just need to neutralize with peroxide between steps, this will also save you the time of rinising the bleach out. I also do a stronger ratio of soda ash to water, because the shirts already wet from the neutralizing solution, which would dilute the soda solution.

  • @Levi-Salmon

    @Levi-Salmon

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Kayla! Bathing suits will probably be a synthetic and not 100% cotton so it's important to use a dye for synthetics like DyeMore from Rit. The other challenge is dying a small surface, it may be difficult to spiral. Either take the time to carefully spiral or try a different fold pattern like a crumple dye!

    You need to neutralise the bleach or you will get holes in the shirt at a later date, I know this as it has happened to me when I first started doing reverse dyes a few years ago, I thought it was because I was using cheap t shirts, now Know it was the bleach that caused them.

    Thanks for the video, it's really informative and helpful! Quick question, do you think pre-soaking the shirt in soda wash before bleaching it could be helpful as opposed to sprinkling it on after rinsing out the bleach? Or would it be basically the same result?

  • @Levi-Salmon

    @Levi-Salmon

    6 ай бұрын

    I added it after rinsing because I did not want the bleach to negate the effects of the soda ash. Worth a shot but my guess would be the results are not as saturated. I tried washing the shirt after bleach then soaking in soda ash and dyeing but re-spiraling the shirt meant the dye didn't saturate the bleached parts as well.

    It can be helpful to check the pH to make sure there's enough soda ash in the water. I believe it's supposed to be over 11. Most people I've seen use 1-1.5 cups per gallon to get the pH up. You may need to use more than the 1 cup standard recipe if your soda ash has absorbed water or is sold with water in the ingredients (like arm & hammer washing soda is). So having pH paper can be really helpful www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/ph.shtml here's a resource Burch is an authority on this. It's the fiber reactive and procion mx section for anyone who isn't familiar! And this: www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/sodaash.shtml

    Do you know if I can dye white on top of the bleach to lighten the orange color? I want a mostly black sweatshirt with white accents. Would it be better to get a white shirt and tye dye it black?

    There is not such thing as white dye, bleach is as close as you're gonna get. In this scenario you definitely want to dye a white shirt black

    The smallest size is plenty to get started, you can get 10+ shirts from it and try out different colors. Once you find you’re using that color a lot then upgrade to the bigger sizes!

    What problems did you have when soaking the shirt in soda ash?

  • @Levi-Salmon

    @Levi-Salmon

    2 жыл бұрын

    When I pulled it out of the soda ash solution the bleached parts of the shirt were darker than when I put it in there. Seems like some of the black from the shirt got in the liquid and made everything darker. The final result was a much duller dye.

  • @Levi-Salmon

    @Levi-Salmon

    3 жыл бұрын

    I've had this happen as well! Not an issue with the bleach, most likely that the hoodie is not 100% cotton. The synthetic fibers won't bleach the same way cotton does. You can still try dying on top of the gray color!

    The only difference you will see is that the royal blue is still able to absorb dye so it's more difficult to predict what the final color will be. Definitely go for it, might be really cool.
