5 Things Women Should Quit Doing After 60... How Many Are YOU Guilty of? :)

What should we STOP doing after 60? No, I’m not talking about wearing jeans or leggings. I’m not talking about any of the usual stereotypes or clichés. I’m talking, instead, about things that can really change your life in a positive way!
In this morning’s show, I would love to share 5 things that every woman over 60 should quit doing. I’m sure that, like me, you will find more than a few of which you are guilty.
What do you think that every woman over 60 should quit getting more from life? Are there any destructive behaviors that you have abandoned in recent years?

I took control of my life when I realized that women never get to retire! My partner and I would work all day in the yard on a project both of us pooped, only difference is when we went in he sat down on the couch with his I pad while I was expected to prepare dinner! His excuse for not helping was that he didn’t know how..well last year I decided to adopt keto and intermittent fasting and I let him know he needed to cook for himself as I was now eating at different times…when he grumbled I simply said ‘I need to do this for me and a 71 year old man does not need a mother’. He had to adapt, if I cook something for both of us he is grateful but no longer expects me to … I’m sick of cooking and preparing meals, especially trying to,think of things to make..I can live on salad..a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders..I’m no longer resentful!

After caring for other people and family members, I quit my job and sold my house and walked away at the age of 59. I have no regrets. My friend and I began dating and now we realized our love for each other. He takes care of me ,waits on me and treats me like a queen. And I take care of him. He still tells me that I have beautiful eyes and a nice butt. Life could not be better.

I am a 65year old widow, and I still teach. I am in my 42nd year. Why, have I not retired, my husband and I were planning to build our dream house, but he died of a massive heart attack. I knew I wanted to build our house, and did that summer. I love teaching and working with elementary children. My interactions with my students give me reason to get out of bed, while my salary pays my house off! My point is, that not all 60 year olds are retired!

My youngest daughter (32) who I am still supporting didn't bother to call me for two weeks after my surgery until I reached out to her. Was walking out of a store with my cart and got hit in the speed zone by a car. Husband never came to the hospital. I lay there surrounded by a crowd of people and heard someone call him and say "Your wife has been hit by a car and they are taking her to the hospital in an ambulance." We lived two blocks from the hospital. He never showed up nor called. Forty years of marriage and "I love you sweetheart's." and he never came. Think about it. He took an action. He knew and made the decision not to come to me. Someone in the blog here says """None of us set out to do the wrong thing." Huh? Many, many set out to do exactly that. Your daughter did you a painful favor.

I think when I hit 60 that I finally realized I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. That moment came when I was invited out with some coworkers after work. I said no, didn’t really want to. I was tired and just wanted to go home. A bunch of them said, but you have to come. At that point, I said, no, you are mistaken. I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to. I have to tell you, that was very freeing. Before I would have bent to pressure. Not anymore. I also let go of toxic people in my life. Life s too short.

Stop being a ‘slave’ to your house or the upkeep of your house. ... I used to live in a 5 bedroom house. I used to like keeping things tidy, making sure every part of the house is dust free, mirrors smudge free & sparkling, windows cleaned, kitchen & pantry uncluttered, the garden well kept, bushes trimmed, the grass always freshly cut...... UNTIL I realized I wasn’t enjoying doing all that stuff anymore & feeling like I am a SLAVE to my house. Now that I am 63 and an empty nester & already back being single, I decided to sell the house, sell stuff that I don’t really need & downsized into a cozy 2 bedroom condo unit. Now, I am happier with myself & can travel freely without having to worry about my living space and no garden to maintain. I just lock up and leave and travel. I am out of the country at least 3 times a year except for this year due to the pandemic.

Margaret, I love your channel, this one I think is one of the most powerful. I am 75, retired at 62 due to health, raised 4 children over a span of 50 years, and did not know how to slow down. I started volunteering, making charity quilts, crafts, etc, etc. Health issues started again. I sought counseling, and was told that I am exactly where God wants me to be. Then later a psychologist who told me to write a letter to my former self, it’s over 30 pages. Those are two of the most life changing things. I learned that it is okay to say NO, I am perfect just the way I am, and that my past challenges are over, they no longer control me. I’ve been able to forgive and move on. I also have found that I no longer dream about conflict and disappointment, I can actually sleep. The subjects you have researched and presented are so important to us women, I have enjoyed every one. I feel good about myself, improved my mental and physical well-being, and even updated my makeup. I look pretty….! I have girlfriends to socialize with, take time to do some art work and read. I love KZread and have just started listening to audio books with newly purchased earbuds. (My eyes are not as good as they used to be.) Thank you for all that you do.

I dress for comfort now - no more heels and uncomfortable work clothes. It seems like yesterday I was that 20 something thin girl with not a lot of confidence and still worried what people thought. I'm paraphrasing. Not long after I found a wooden sign that said My house was clean last week. Sorry you missed it. I bought it and hung it up. It always seemed like if it was spotless no one came over but when it wasn't everyone came. It was liberating! And then I noticed no one else ever seemed to notice or care except maybe my mom lol. I understand, but we equally know being lonely can be so so emotionally painful, especially when you use to have a companion😯. Sometimes we do it just to have someone to share our moments, our pains and our joys with. Sometimes we do it because we feel getting married to someone can help give some kind of motherly cover to our kid. Am speaking as a single daughter a little girl.

The change was a shock to everyone who'd always known me with long hair. Some approve but most don't. And you know what? I seriously don't give a rats arse. A therapist told me more than 20 years ago that "NICE is a four-letter word." True that! I'm 65. I don't care what other people think of me. I've eliminated toxic influences. I no longer "chase" supposed friends. I do things that please me, and avoid - as much as reasonably possible - doing things that make me feel like less. I am my best, most supportive, most loving friend. I may hear what someone has to say, but I don't have to DO it. I'm old enough to make up my own mind, to do things my way, and to act cranky when I feel cranky. The cat doesn't object.

You don't have to care if people "like" you anymore, especially if they are not important in your life anyway. I've had to learn to stop expecting my brother who has always been distant emotionally and physically ( he lives 5 hrs. away by car ) to actually change and show he cares about me. I cannot change him so I have to change my expectation of him which is zero and be OK with that. It's taken me 66 yrs to realize that and now we never see each other and it's actually easier for me in a weird way. I felt bad for my mom who died thinking he didn't love her. He has to live with that, but perhaps he doesn't think about it. Who knows and more importantly who cares!

I’m not looking backwards. I have wonderful memories, a wonderful marriage but you are right, this is my time. People frequently ask me if I have gone back to my old house to see the changes made. I say, no. I’m in a good place and I’m keeping out of the past. Making new friends and getting involved in totally new activities. Getting out of my comfort zone to explore my new life.

I love your video Margaret and the very on-point comments from yourself and the beautiful ladies. I am 72 but look like I am in my mid-fifties. I don’t ever wear make-up, have never worn a bra or have very rarely taken prescription drugs. I have never been married or had kids and have had a wild but also very productive and interesting life. I was a legal interpreter for many years, have been published and have sold my books to lawyers in 26 states; lived in South America for many years, hitchhiked around Spain in 1970 and really discovered my freedom living in NYC years ago. Now I live in NM and my advice is this: Don’t let (especially professionals) assume that they can boss you around because you are”old” in years. For example, don’t let your dentist pull your good teeth; don’t let the optometrist tell you that you have glaucoma (when you know damn well you don’t) and need laser surgery (just so optometrist can get a kickback); don’t let a visiting nurse tell you that your blood pressure is so high that you need medication. (All I did was cut out salt and get my iodine from seaweed). I have found out in my senior years that people are programmed to think that “old people” need to be told what to do and how to live - including ocassinally trying to cut in line ahead of you because you are “non-essential.”

Please don’t make the mistake of thinking you are able to tell if you have glaucoma, you won’t be able to tell until it’s too late and you lose your vision, you won’t be aware of the rising pressure in your eyeballs. And see an opthamologist, not an optometrist. If you are monitoring your own blood pressure and have controlled it with diet that’s great, but many can’t and slip into their old habits and silently move towards a stroke.

I’m 65 and I’ve changed so much in my sixties. I care less what I look like to others. My makeup and hair doesn’t have to be perfect, if I even wear it anymore even though I want to be presentable to other people. My taste in food has changed, and so has my outlook on life. I realize that most of my life has been lived now and my problem is looking back at the past. I try not to but I just can’t help it. I sit and think about all that I have went through and how I would do things differently if I could. I know I need to stop doing that, it’s just that I have health issues and depression and I just can’t see anything ahead of me except the inevitable. Sorry if I rained on anyone’s parade. I’ve been married and divorced twice and I’m not going down that road again so life is what it is. There’s no do overs so to the younger women I would say, live life to the fullest and embrace it. Take chances while you have chances to take because life is so short.

I’m 74 and three things I’ve learned have made me a happier person. I’ve stopped rushing. Instead I try to enjoy where I am and what I’m doing at the moment. The second thing is that I refuse to be with people who are toxic for me. I don’t want to be surrounded by constant negativity who absorb all my energy and bring me down. The third thing is that when I don’t want to do something, I don’t do it. I have learned to say “no”. I can’t please everyone, not everyone is going to like me which is fine. This is life and I aim to enjoy it to the fullest for whatever time I have.

Count your blessings! I have always wanted a child of my own, but it wasn’t in the cards for me. It must be so fulfilling to lovingly raise a child and teach them all the lessons that you have learned over the years. He may not listen now, because teens know everything, lol, but he will remember it and use it when older!

@@donnagoray3551 Thank God they have you! You are a blessing to them!❤️ As much as I want a child, I realize that at 62, I probably don’t have the stamina to do it anymore.

I love this. I saw your title and thought it was going to be about wearing less makeup and jewelry, and I was ready to argue about that. But of course, you are much more real than that and your list is fantastic. Yes, this is a great age and for surprising reasons. We know ourselves and accept ourselves and our lives. Thank you.

Good afternoon....seems you are talking to me, just turns 60,lost my husband almost two years ago, and it has left just over thinking I don't know if it's because he died suddenly and I think I'm too much of a people pleaser. I need to interact with this group definitely
