    Thanks for sharing your tips. The folks who can do these swaps are likely the shops and they would prefer to keep these gotchas a trade secret, IMO.

    There are more tips coming! There is so many secrets, hints, and tips to doing this swap. It's all simple things, but they can add up and cause your build to be held up or stop progress.

    Does the S54 from the e46 m3 just bolt and plug into other inline 6 e46 cars or does it need a special harness or anything like that. I want to do a swap and i can fiddle with mechanical stuff, but i hate electrical stuff.

    Thinking about an S54 swap on my e39, any suggestions on what I would need bottom end wise( I was thinking like m5 rear, maybe custom driveshaft🤷🏾‍♂️ ), also trans and wiring ??

    You know I don't know if anyone has done a E-39 with an S54 that could be amazing!!. You would want to keep the transmission that came with the S54 the drive shaft from the five series might work. You would likely want an M5 rear end like you said because the E-46 rear end won't work. As far as getting it all to talk to the computer I am sure Kastle performance can work that out with you. It would be similar to what i have done here bring all the wiring harness over from the S54 engine and then get the 5 series body computer to talk to the S54 engine computer. Keep me posted on how it goes if you try it!

    IIRC, and based on what I've read, you can use a five or six speed from an m54 car to bolt up to the s54. the s54 does fit on an m54 e39 subframe, and the dimensions aren't too far off from the 3.0. as far as wiring is concerned, I think the e46 and e39 share a lot of electronics, so the swap should be fairly oem. I've seen videos of it floating around. I will do it one day so I've done tons of research on it lol

    Which heater valve did you end up using for the swap- the stock 325i or M3? I'm in the middle of a swap right now currently.. Thanks!

    I have a 2004 3.0i X3 and the engine is blown. I would like to know what you think I would need for this swap... Also, what's the cheapest source for an S54 engine, eBay or BMW? I read somewhere that eBay engines are being sold for the same price as a brand new engine from BMW!

    Get a donor car. You’ll need so much from an M3 it’s cheaper to buy a poor condition M3 than to piece it together.

    @@TenzaMotorsports Thank you. There aren't many M3's in my part of the world, easier to get an engine. The cost to have a non running car ferried and towed to my home is probably not worth it. Unless it's like $3,000 but, what are the chances of finding an M car at that price...

    I found one the other day for 7500. The engines, transmissions and diff can cost that much separately. If you can find one for under $8k ish. It would be worth it.

    The problem with an engine is u have NO IDEA what ur getting. With the inherent problems these have I HIGHLY recommend u do some important things on any s54. Rod bearings are a big thing that goes bad(and one of the few things that can COMPLETELY smoke a motor)as well as the vanos. So I HIGHLY suggest u have the motor gone over before putting it in...or just get another 3.0(which was the updated e36 m3 motor)and put the m3 cams into it and send it

    No. The 330 is staying. This wagon is being built for a customer

    @@TenzaMotorsports ohh,ok. Being that you're familiar with the active auto charger, if given a choice, would you repeat the project with the charger, or do a turbo? Just trying to get a feel, since im undecided between those two.

    The M3 shell that will be left over from this project will be a boosted build. We are doing a twin screw supercharger. If I had the knowledge I have today, and my car needed more power, I would be doing a custom twin screw.

    Yes, the 330ci would have a twin screw supercharger if I had to do this all over again.
