I'm nervously watching through hoping I'm intermediate now, and I'm definitely there according to these standards. I was waiting for alternate and/or fingerpicking, soloing and scales/arpeggios, note picking, complex cords... Actually a lot I'm proud to know I have knowledge of. So I'm gonna do something rare and pat myself on the back, because ten months ago I was watching your 'very first beginners lessons' and you e minor pentatonic videos and barely understanding. Now it's way behind me and I'm working on intermediate to advanced aspects of the guitar and loving it. It's very worth it so if you're struggling I promise you'll get it, and be happy you did. Thanks Andy! Peace from Philly!

If you haven't, you should really learn how to alternate. There's a slight trick to it that no one really says. Finding out chords all over the neck is really easy if you understand WHY they're made the way they are. If you want a headstart in finding more complex chords, just search up "Guitar Inversions"

Blazer Strike barre chords open up the entire neck and go hand in hand with note recognition. you need to learn the basic 3 shapes to give you any chord depending on the positioning.

The B is just an A moved up 2 frets but it's necessary to do the Full Barre. It's better in general to play the B chord form with a partial barre with the ring finger. The toughest chord IMO is the Full Barre G chord. Do a full barre and then form a G with the other 3 fingers - 2 frets higher. Try it - you'll see what I mean.

My list of signs you are an advanced player: 1. Playing any chord or inversion anywhere you want, with or without extensions. (Fretboard and theory knowledge) 2. Knowing your scales when you hear them. 3. You love practising scales, and the things you do on a guitar sound beautiful to you. 4. You have no problem figuring out things by ear. 5. You can come up with an improvised song on spot with no preparation. 6. You are consistent with practice.

Terrific video Andy! You have described me to a tee. I have been playing guitar for about 14 months & am still very much a beginner. Starting later in life (at 68) does not help matters. Since I am retired, I usually play for 1 to 2 hrs. per day. Still can't play bar chords in songs & have trouble with them in general. Just starting to get the hang of playing tunes & keeping the strumming going. Changing chords quickly is still a problem as well. It is really hard to get to the next level but I keep a positive attitude & keep trying. The "rule of thumb" is that it takes around 10,000 hrs. to know how to play an instrument well. I am hoping that I can learn guitar much sooner than that. Anyway, your lessons have been a big help to me & your advice is always right on! Thanks you mate, Steve

+Dajavoutube Hi Rick: Agreed, Andy is a terrific teacher indeed. I know that I will never be able to "Master" the guitar. However, just being able to play a few tunes "fluidly" with the correct strumming patterns, etc... would be nice. Me thinks that you really need to start playing an instrument at a very early age in order to get proficient at it. One also needs to have the ability to do so as well. Then there are those that are just naturals at it. Those people really amaze me. Anyway, good luck with your playing! Hopefully, we both get to where we want to be sooner than later...... :) Steve

Steve, learn the following chords: E, A, B7 and also C, G, D, E minor. What you should do is strum slowly four down strums, change chord. After a while do this with your eyes closed. Those two groups of chords will pretty much cover most songs of interest to you. The way to learn bar chords (if you really want to) is on the 5th fret changing between A major and D minor. Play each string and then four hard down strums, change chord, repeat. Then you progress to the third fret ( G major, C minor ). +++ It is better to keep the right hand on the beat and strum regardless of whether the left hand has had time to spot the chord. Initially the mind gives it the hold on don't strum until the chord is in place. With your eyes closed you know you are going to miss spot chords and it is easier to focus on the right hand strumming on the beat.

Have you seen the trick on putting your first finger flat then rolling it back onto the side a little bit to get the notes to sound? Also, put the pressure on the middle of your index finger, not the sides trying to get those top and bottom notes. They fall into place if you put the pressure right in the middle. If not you can find lots of videos that will help you with them. Once you get that down just muscle-memorize the shape so you place all the fingers down at once, then practice switching from 6th string E shaped bar chords to 5th string A panda Am shaped chords then you're 75% of the way through basic barre chords and 90% through the struggle

I find that motivation and avoiding bad habits are hurdles when teaching mates the basics. I find that if you can introduce them to a simple concept/style/progression etc that allows them to see the possibilities ahead if they keep at it can help avoid ending up on that platu of half muted cowboy chords and resentment that leads to repetitive "repetitive camp fire guitar guy" syndrome. The basic pentatonic shape that can be played under the E bar shape and one step up from the A shape to create Hendrix/Fruchanti style licks between changes is a good way to turn the guitar into crack for beginners. If they grasp that concept and make it there with a good posture and technique foundation, they have the tools to explore and minor chords etc fall into place... Hendrix tricks like using the first finger for barring the back of an A bar shape allowing you to embellish with the third, or just funk shit up! really makes the freeboard open up too. All the sudden somebody who had nothing but cowboy chords and two bar shapes in their toolbox last week, is embellishing over Hey Joe or Under the bridge this week and the possibility's look endless to them.

I've always wondered what level I was. I've been learning the strumming pattern by ear for Claptons 'bell bottom blues'. And taught myself how to play on slide Elmore James cover of 'dust my broom', well half of it in 2 days. Never did it before until last Tuesday. This has definitely clarified where I am now :) I still got more work to do, good thing it's always fun.

Great channel Andy thanks for all the tutorials. I have a quick question....I’m 40 years old now and have been playing for 3 years now. Due to work commitments and family life etc I really have to make the most of the practise time I get! I can usually guarantee an hour a day and some days 2-3! Although I’d say on average it’s about an hour! My question is what is the best way of maximising that hour so that I get the most out of it? At the moment I practise chords, arpeggio patterns, songs and trying to learn to transcribe songs by ear. I’m hoping I’ve been doing the right things??

is it better to learn on an electric guitar? It's easier, for sure. But I love acoustic. Problem is a good acoustic is much more expensive than an electric. Any suggestions ? I'm not versed in electric anything ,such as amps, speakers, wires, but I know I'd be able to practice with headphones at three a.m. with an electric, but I can't bring it with me everywhere. which one is it then? Also are guitars tailored for different size hands? Doesn't seem fair if you are good but have smaller hands than, say, Steve Vai.

Hello Andy, thanks a lot for your lessons, I've learned a lot from you (especially your strumming course, I used to struggle about strumming the most). I have a request, you made a video to the F barre, could you make a video for B (A-shaped barre)? I really struggle with this. Bm (Am-shaped barre) is so much easier, I either struggle with the barre, or I just cannot place my fingers 2-3-4 correctly while I've got a good barre. I'm looking forward for an answer, love from Germany

You gotta try this cuz I had the same problem, and still do with that bullshit A shape using three fingers. Just use your ring finger to barre strings 2,3 & 4 instead of fingering each string. It's so much simpler. Your ring finger will naturally mute the high e. I do use the A7 and A maj7 shape with individual fingers, but they're much easier considering you don't have to cram all 3 in one fret, especially the higher frets where they get smaller. Try this for a month or less and your finger will get strong enough to do it no problem, hope this helps!!!!

I understand what you mean about picking songs that are a bit too difficult. I'm a massive Metallica fan so the first song I attempted to play was Nothing Else Matters wich is finger picking and becomes very difficult very quickly so I basically had to give up on it and try something a bit more simple because I am by no means James Hetfield

What level do you think you need to be to play guitar in a cheesy covers band? Have you thought of doing a series of lessons to cover, say, the year of a guitar journey that would lead up to being a gigging guitarist? Or do the lessons you talk about at the end cover that?
