5 things in Serbia that SHOCKED me as a Russian immigrant

Yo guyz! It’s me Kseniya! I left Russia a month ago already and Serbian culture just hit me like a train 😁. So as a Russian immigrant I found some things that surprised me a lot. And I want to share with you the difference between Russian and Serbian culture and habits in everyday life. Life in Russia was a little bit, if I can say that, different. That’s why leaving Russia is always exciting even in terms of today’s situation.
Hope you’ll like the video! ✌🏻

Why would anyone support you channel? For Russian liberals like you Serbians were not brothers, but for ordinary people yes they are....your personal knowledge and feelings are exclusively yours. If you did not know nothing about Serbia, it s your problem and it does not mean that other Russian citizens do not know. When I explains former Yugoslavia, now Serbia, everyone knows very well about Belgrade and Serbia. So, it was just you and your "knowledge"....have a nice stay in Belgrade. Ako mislite da sam Rus, napisacu par reči na srpskom. Nije istina da Rusi ne znaju za Srbiju! Kad im kažem bivša Jugoslavija, Beograd, a sada Srbija, svi vrlo dobro znaju ko smo i šta smo....

@@r2d2-gj3jo, she didn't say that Serbians are not brothers. Quite the contrary. The author is definitely quite fond of Serbians. And I am as well. What was mentioned is the fact that it was not widely known before the Russo-Ukrainian war that the Serbs actually support Russians. Out of like, say, 300 people I communicated with in Russia in my home city, there was something like 2 who said "Ah, Serbia! A brother Nation". And, fck, most of them are not liberals! We don't have much of that stuff in Russia. I think it is a great fail from the Russian government that they didn't make this information widespread (among many other things). That's just the fact. And author notes this fact. And it's really sad. Not knowing you have a brother somewhere is truly sad.

Is there any reason that some Greeks would have anything against Serbs? I only visited Greece once around 2009 (Athens, near Omonia square) and had a weird experience: a friend and me entered a small shop, and the lady working there was nice at first, but then asked where we're from. We said Serbia and she immediately became kinda scared and said 'Ah, sorry, I have to close for now, sorry' effectively shoing us out of there...we were confused but said ok and left. The time was like 15:42 or 12:17 (no idea but I remember I checked the time and it wasn't anything round, didn't make sense to have to close immediately)...This is one occasion and I really didn't spend much time in Greece, especially talking to local people, so don't worry I don't have any conclusions based on that one bad interaction, maybe it was one in a million for some reason but was bit weird. Anyway glad to hear what you said here :)

I am a Serb, who lives in Moscow and what was shock for me is that Russian portions are extremely small. In restaurant, I always feel as cook steals half of my portion 😁 Also, have to add : Russians simply do not have such a sophisticated relationship with food. Food is not so important topic in Russian culture. For me it was cultural shock to see in the restaurant this kind of scene: two or three people are at the table and waiter brings food to one of them. He eats his food and rest of the people waiting 20 additional minutes for waiter to bring food to others. In other words they are not bringing food to all people at the table in the same time...and they do not see problem about it. That shows that Russian do not perceive meal as important part of socializing. On the other hand we live on Balkan which had so many different influences over centuries- Turkish, Hungarian, German etc. We also have partially Mediterranean mentality. Food is important for us. We discuss food. It is not possible to happen that waiter being portion to one person and that other one waits for his next 15 min...in Serbia that would be considered as rude. And guests would complain. Eating together is considered as social event and opportunity for bonding, friendship etc. Obviously in Russia is looked at more as...well just feeding time. For us it is different :)

Typically it is asked, if meals are to be carried to the table as-they-cooked, or all together. You have a choice, depending on a situation. It might me that 1 guy is very hungry and orders something simple and fast to cook as a pre-meal - there's no point to wait in such case.

One guy took my 2 years old son to his beach chair and hugged him, and kept kissing and squeesing him tightly. I was really shocked and uncomfortable about it, but I taught that's different culture, maybe it's normal among Russians, so I stayed cool. I think that it is too early to judge Serbs after only one month of your stay. If you didn't heared of us, that's your prob, because we learned at elementary school about almost every world country and nation, their demographic and economy. Hi Kseniya, Sounds like Serbia is a touch country, meaning they like to hug and kiss and shake hands, etc. America used to be like that but seems like it's less and less that way. American's seem like were in our own little bubbles now days. We're still friendly but it seems we got ourselves in such a damn hurry we have no time for even small talk with one another anymore. If you were shopping here in a store and had Daniel in the cart most people wouldn't even notice or pay any attention to you, maybe some older ladies might make a fuss over Daniel but most would just go about their business, oblivious to what's going on around them. When I was growing up, we used to know and visit with all our neighbors in the neighborhood, nowadays, we don't even know our neighbors names and we just wave to them if we see them outside. Sad really. I'm old school though, I will strike up conversations and love it when I meet a stranger and they take just a second to talk or at least exchange pleasantries. I think that's why there is a lot of infighting within' America nowadays, no one gets to know one another anymore, to see or even try to see other points of view. Sad. Well, when it comes to meat I think most folks around the world like their meat warm, so I think Serbians are in the minority there. We do eat "cold cuts" in America, usually as a sandwich, like a ham and cheese on rye with mustard or mayo, something like that. I think I would take a pass on cold, fat, greasy, pig meat though. I believe you are right when it comes to drinking in that no one comes close to Mother Russia. Every country has their share of drinkers, including America but Russia is well known as a country that consumes a lot of alcohol, especially Vodka. Maybe heavy drinking stems from the Soviet Union days, I don't know. Maybe it stems from being a depressed society? Maybe it's just tradition? It wouldn't surprise me that even more Russians have picked up or have increased their drinking since the events of February and I can't say as I can blame them. I'm glad that Serbians and Russians seem to get along so well. You seem happier and relaxed there. It makes me happy that you, Vlad and Daniel are together and away from the troubles of Russia. I'm sure you still feel much sadness for what's going on in your homeland and in Ukraine. Many around the world are sadden too. God, why can't we just have some peace? With love and much respect to you and the whole family, Steve from Ohio.

Hello! We in Serbia love cold meat but only from spit roasters as usually it needs several hours to prepare and you have to make an reservation for that, so it usually is served cold. But we also love hot meat, for example from grill like hamburgers (we call them pljeskavica) or cevapcici (internationally famous), or beef, or fried meet where we have Becka (Vienna) snicla or Karadjordjeva snicla (Karadjordje was leader of Serbian uprising against Ottoman tyrani in 19 century). Regarding drinking, northern Europeans, includin Russians, Poles, Finns, Swedes, or Irish and British people are more prone to drinking than southern Europeans, and even how and what they drink is different. In the European south we more appritiate enjoyment and drinks with more taste like rakija, uzo, mastika, metaxa, sangria, calvados, sambuca, grappa, campari,...while in the nort they drink mostly votka and whiskey.

Yeah, the jelly meat (aspic/hladetina/etc..) thing is an acquired taste. My sister and parents love it, but I can't even look ak it, not to mention eat it. The food is usually very good, not just Serbia, but the region as a whole. It's mostly very similar cuisine. Be careful with rakija, it can be deceptive. Thank you for this vid, it cheered me up on a rather grey day. So, regarding cold meat, it's not common in all parts of the country but it did come from very early, pre-ottoman days where there's a practice to "prepare in advance" and then store it somewhere out of the sun so that it'll stay edible longer. Of course, it cools off by the time it's served. Cold fat is basically lard so it's not any different in terms of health impact. And when it comes to drinking, idk if you know but Serbia doesn't have a legal drinking age limit (18+ for purchasing alcohol but no limit for ingestion). Alcoholic drinks, especially rakija, are seen as medicine. They are consumed in abundance, but, in order to avoid getting light-headed, water is added to the side. You can drink a lot more that way and also savour the taste while at it. Now. Since we're at the topic of rakija. Take a stroll around any city, park, whatever has some trees. Find walnuts. Mark the calendar to pick up green fruits off them. Get like 1kg or so. Put them in jars, put sugar on top, maybe a tiny bit of alcohol to top it off and leave it in the sun to ferment. By the end of the year, you have Orahovaca! The traditional way. Best medicine :)

When it comes to cold meat, I think that it's easier on a stomach to eat pork fat cold. And also in Serbia, especially before, you had roasted pig only on holidays and big occasions like slava, and here, as you know, we like it polako so the celebrations last at least a whole day and often couple of days and it's impossible to keep it warm for so long... When it comes to Russian relation to Serbia, you are kind of right, it definitely isn't at the same level but I know some people who worked in Russia and there are some similar stories, like taxi drivers in Moscow refusing to charge when they find out you are Serbia or free beers at a bar. When it comes to kids, it's probably amplified because you are in small town and your kid is known as "that russian kid". But I do remember that when I was little it wasn't surprising if someone bought me a chocolate or something like that while standing in line at the store. But that's more of a small towns and villages thing, I doubt it happens much in Belgrade. Ann when it comes to drinking. Here it's often said that Russians drink to get drunk and we drink out of pleasure. Results are similar but the journey is different.

I'm not surprised that Russian and Serbian love is not balanced out, it's pretty natural considering the history and size comparison. For example, lots of that love comes from Russia's help on multiple occasions: like fighting the Turks, World wars, or with respect to Kosovo. For a Russian in 19th century, Serbia was maybe just some land where soldiers were told to go and fight. For a Serb, Russia was a sister that helped with our liberation, and that sticks in collective memory. Etc. And due to us being so much smaller, we couldn't be of much help to Russians throughout the history. In my opinion, all Slavs should do much better job at getting closer and backing each other. All Slavic countries would benefit from more brotherhood among our nations - and we are indeed distant cousins, which is also just cool!

Unfortunately Slavs do not get along well enough. Western Slavs seem to be OK with each other (but not with Russia), Eastern - not so much, Southern (Balkans) are a total mess with lots of unresolved conflicts. And it's really a pity. From my perspective Slavic nations have very much in common. The differences could serve for enriching one another not to advocate infighting. And the common ground could make it actually easier to share.

I am Serbian living in Russia for 10 years and I can tell you that I agree with you 1000000% on everything. The saddest thing is that if Serbian people knew how much Russians don’t care about Serbian-Russian friendship they would never treat Russians that well. People would literally remove their kids away from my son because he spoke another language and they would always look at as with suspicion what are we doing here and what do we want from them. Nothing. I’ve just married a Russian man and we live in Russia. That’s it. My son got first friend only when he learned Russian very well and they were unable to understand that he is part Serbian. I was treated really bad many times. I was asked why did I come to Russia? What were my intentions? If I’m a spy? 😂Why did I take Russian man, when Russia has a problem that they have more women than men and because of bad foreigners like me Russian women were forced to leave Russia and look for husband somewhere else. Just awful. I’m for friendship between nations and I think there should be more videos like this but in Russian because Russian really need to become more open minded. Serbia and Russia have similarities but they also have differences, this is the case among all Slavic countries and that is normal due to different historical circumstances and geographical location. What seems to me is that as far as some habits, ways of life, cultural and mental characteristics, etc. are concerned, Russians are in some ways similar to Scandinavian countries, Serbia and other South Slavic countries have a lot of similarities with Italy and Greece (especially seen in our famous "polako"), while Western Slavs have certain similarities with Germany, but regardless of that, all three Slavic groups have a lot of things that connect them. Water is drunk with rakija so as not to get drunk. Our rule is that you enjoy yourself while drinking, but that you have a limit so that you don't overdo it. We also have that jelly with meat, in our country it's called "pihtije". As for the cold meat, I think that usually just the roast meat (pečenje) is eaten cold, it's better for the stomach and it's tasty, plus there's a lot of it since it's usually eaten for some celebrations. Barbecue, steaks and other types of meat are usually eaten warm. As for Russian knowledge about Serbia, in my experience, I think it depends from Russian to Russian, in which part of Russia they are, etc. in my opinion, Ukrainian Russians and Crimean Russians have the greatest knowledge about Serbs and Serbia for many reasons, primarily some historical but also blood ties and maybe because they are a little closer geographically.

"polako" is more an attitude towards work, since in Serbia it is not worth stressing about it... Balkan people actually have a "temperament" and are very loud and can often seem agressive to a northener. As for water with rakija, it's not true, you don't drink it to not get drunk, you drink it in order to not dehydrate, and to wash away the burning feeling.

Okay, so we’re south Slavic. The key word here being “south”. Southerners everywhere seem to be more open, friendly and cheerful everywhere, so it’s the same with Slavic people. Russia has helped us a few times in history, so we remember that kindly, far too few nations have helped us, we were mostly attacked. There’s also being from the same seed, that being the Slavic seed, that we treasure. We treasure family and we see Russia as family, even thou Serbians are a bit salty with all the Russians driving our prices up, it’s been very hard for us, especially for our students who are right now in a hard situation finding and affording apartments, we still say let’s not get mad Russians, and Ukrainians as well, are our Slavic family and we’ll be there in time of crisis for them. And when it comes to helping, we’re like that to foreigners who come here, not just Russians. Hospitality is very important in our culture. We’re not those mean monsters that they portray in Hollywood movies. I mean, I could argue that we’re much nicer to foreigners that to each other which I find to be an issue, we could be much nicer to each other, but that’s a separate conversation. When it comes to kids it’s all very innocent. Playing, hugging and buying sweets for kids comes from a pure heart and nothing else, I can’t stress that enough. I could imagine my dad giving my old toys if a Russian kid moved next door and I would be proud of him. ❤ Oh, and that salad she mentioned, I don’t know why we call it “Russian sale” but it’s also a staple for New Year’s as well here! And the meat in the jelly thing, we have it also, we call it “pihtije” and I as well always found it disgusting and never tried it, but it’s full of collagen and as I’m getting older I have been thinking of starting to it it! 😂 Tl;dr we’re just a very hospitable people and we want our guests to feel welcomed! If you only drink one or two glasses of brandy, then you don't need water, but for larger quantities, water is necessary. Some drink separately, first a batch of brandy, then a batch of beer or vice versa, but rarely together.

Russians came and fight on our side many times in history. You have a lot of Russian cemeteries: Jagodina have a long relationship with Russia. They played the best in WWI and Balkan wars with Ottomans. As well as Serbians played in time of Ottoman empire in Slavljanoserbsk now in Ukrain. They came to Russia when Tzar made a pledge that he will accept all the soldiers from Austrian hungarian border that was created to fight against Ottomans here. Many of them were gone to Russian empire as well as my grand grand grandfather and he married there and came with his wife to Kingdom Yugoslavia. You must see documentary about WWI in Serbia called VELIKI RAT

It was a Serb, Sava Vladislavić, who founded the Russian intelligence service. His "Secret report on the Black Sea" fascinated the Emperor. Sava moved to St. Petersburg (1709) & received title of 1st secret advisor...Sava Vladislavić had decisive role in victory of Russia over Sweden in Battle of Poltava in 1709. Sava designed strategy later applied by military leader Suvorov against Napoleon. On Sava’s advice the bulk of the Russian army did not enter into direct conflict w/ attackers but retreated while flying raids attacked Swedish supply lines. When Russians decided to engage in battle, the Swedish Army was so exhausted & ill supplied that the defeat was catastrophic. He was very instrumental in the peace making process in 1711 ending the Russian-Turkish War. His signature is on the pacification agreement next to the sign. of both Emperors. Sava’s greatest achievement was his visit to China in 1725...took him 3 years to end the Russian-Chinese tension...agreement signed resulted in creating a distinct border between the 2 countries, a distance more than 6,000 miles...border is basically the same today.

I remember when a friend of mine told me her maiden name and it was very interesting name and I said where are you from?? And she said her family had come from Serbia. And I was like where is Serbia?? I don't usually use that many question marks in real life. But it was 1984 and Serbia was in Yugoslavia back then so that's why I had not heard of Serbia. I also had not heard of Latvia or Estonia, although I had heard of Lithuania. And Poland had been in the news a couple years before. Ksenia (Not quite sure how to spell that) This was very interesting. I think in the US if you just walked up to people's children and started touching them, they would also get upset. There is this whole thing about strangers. Maybe that's why, I don't know. But I'm from New England and we tend to be very what would be the right word? Cold? We aren't outgoing and friendly I don't think. I mean I think we are eventually but not right off the bat. I used to ride the bus in Boston and there were lots and lots of people and all of the people from... I think they were from Vietnam maybe, definitely somewhere in Asia, they were all chatting away. And you could not hear a single American voice. Because the Americans were not talking to each other. And this was long before we had cell phones obviously. Oh it was in the '80s I didn't say that. Sorry we didn't have cell phones. We might not even have had books. We just didn't talk to each other. There was one man who talked to other people on the bus and if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have had a place to live when my parents moved to Florida. He knew another girl on the bus who was looking for a roommate and he matched us up and I am thankful. Even though we really didn't get along very well. And we only lived together for 6 months and after 2 weeks of living with her she moved to another more expensive apartment that I couldn't afford to live in but I had to go with her because I didn't have any place else. And then she just kept raising my half of the rent. But also when I offered her the towels my mother gave me she looked at me and she said "the bathroom is yellow!" So that wasn't necessary. And she really hated Puerto Rican people. But I'm Puerto Rican. I'm not quite as Irish as she was and I can't remember her last name and it was 40 years ago. But that was today's stream of consciousness. It probably wasn't the first ;-)

Handshakes is common in all the Balkans. In Romania I shakes hands with my work colleagues every day twice when arriving and work and when leaving. It is indeed disrepectful not to shake hands and if you avoid it is considered rude or that you have a problem with that person. Unfortunately northern Europeans find it strange and a bit too much to shake hands so often. There is also another custom which has to do with the fact that Balkan people tend to wash their hands more often than other Europeans so there is less of a fear that you’ll contact germs

Also no one knows where Serbia is except for Balkan ppl. So Russia is not unique in that. Serbs look up to Russia because of historical reasons and shared religion. Russia also tends to back Serbia on the world stage which is a big thing for small countries since the west wants to destroy us at every turn and we are surrounded by nato and EU nations who will gladly provide the airspace to do it.

If you just do multiple shots of rakija and get drunk in 30 min then where's fun there? That's why people will sip that rakija and drink sprinkling water along to prolong staying conscious. The Romans in ancient times did the similar thing with adding water to wine to dilute it, also for the sake of having longer conversations with friends.

Due to serious studing of history and geography is schools since we were kids, we know all the countries over the world pretty well at least some details. and since Russia as important powerforce and Serbia were always on the same side, plus both slavic and ortodox Christians we like Russia by default. we had rough history and we lost so many people in wars, that finnaly created our nations mentality. we are very social and direct, smiling a lot compared to Polish, Russiand or Ucranians. but that doesnt mean we are naive, anger we can produce is something I rarely saw with some other nations.. and not like italians e.g. we dont bleff, when Serbs are angty, there will be storm.. And what I like about us serbs, we are southerners but still slavs and tall, we are slavs but like mediteranians. In sports and battles we are going till the end strong, but in peace we collapse because of lack of harmony. also ortodox Christianity shaped us a lot, even today golabilaztion and beflre comunism damaged us...

Good observations, however, I have to add a word of caution: rakija (except for industrial rakija) is usually stronger than vodka :) Most often between 45 and 50%. Акуратно! :D

Kseniya, I really love this video! I enjoyed hearing the turkeys🦃🦃, seeing the cats 🐈 🐈‍⬛ in the background, and the sunny village day! 💙🌞🏡🌻 I watched carefully to see where in the world you attacked those offended Serbians to cause such an uproar, but I couldn’t find an attack anywhere. I thought surely you must have at least run under a bridge chasing after some trolls who live there and attacked them hard with a big stick, hitting them with a low blow and stomping on their toes!! But there’s absolutely no evidence of it at all. 🤷🏼‍♀️ This is a wonderful and very interesting video. It seems very positive to me. It actually reminds me of some of the contrasts between my northern European background family and my husband’s family from Sicily. There were some large cultural differences! I really had to make some big adjustments in order to get along with his family! It took a while for me to understand and be comfortable, but ultimately it was good for me to learn to be flexible & able to shift gears between cultures. There are pros and cons in every culture, and it’s good to be able to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of where you come from, and where you go to. 💪🏽 I really appreciate you sharing your journey with us! I hope the flak you have received does not discourage you from sharing your every day life and adventures with us! We would love to see what new foods you enjoy, all the places you like to visit, & what new experiences you will have in the future! Perhaps there will be some festivals and concerts coming up that you could share with us? Are there artisans or craftsmen in your town or places you visit, who still make things by hand, who would allow you to visit their workshops? It would be interesting to see what type of handcrafts there are in Serbia. I wonder about what types of things people make it home, or buy from neighbours in the village, or what types of things they have to go to the big city for, or what types of things do they order online instead? I think if you are living in a country village, it might be interesting to see in what ways they still live like their grandparents and great grandparents did. It might be interesting if you got to taste homemade cheese/bread/jam etc. but if they made things that were non-perishable, perhaps you could share a business card or website and maybe a way that people could even contact them about buying something if one of your viewers would be interested? I remember a travel vlogger Who sometimes included artisan crafters who made unique jewelry, lambskin vests, embroidered folk tunics, woven wrap skirts, purses/bags, candles and candlesticks, soaps, small wooden flutes and hand carved artwork etc, the types of things that would ship easily. After visiting them, asking a few questions and video of them demonstrating their craft, she would zoom in on their business card with contact information for a few seconds. Most of the people were very glad to be featured on the video, and they may have even paid her for this promotion, I’m not sure. It might be something for you to consider in the future. I think many of us would be interested to see the arts and crafts of Serbia. 💙🌻, 💙⬜️🟦⬜️, ♥️.

I find no similarities between Serbs and Russians. Who cares about Slavic roots. Just like Italians and Romanians are different, although they are Romanic nations. Serbs belong to South European circle, Russians to the North.

People who drink water with rakija are not taking half a liter of water after every shot, just a few sips. And some people dont drink water with rakija at all. When it come to "Russians dont know about Serbia" - thats true about secular, westernized Russians like yourself, Russian Christians and right wingers know very well, from my experience and from experience of people that I know. I dont know why so many dislikes, its a fair video.
