Time warp and no change are some of the qualities about Tasmania that people love and don't want changed. We don't want to be like every other big cities and towns. Slow and retro. These things are rare and treasured by those who love Tassie. There are plenty of other places that can deliver what you might want. We moved from a big city 30 years ago and we love how it is. Yes cars are essential. I've found that it takes 6 months to a year to start to get a close group of friends. Enjoy

I lived in Tassie for years and absolutely l loved everything about it-you should go back to America or the mainland where the important things to you like shopping and mailorder and cars and jobs are easier-you dont realise what you have there !

In Melbourne I can get next day delivery if the item is at the Melbourne warehouse or 2 day delivery from Sydney warehouse. Items from America do take a couple of weeks, but if you want to look for a silver lining, I think the slow shipping from the US stops us impulse buying haha.

Yeah, I live in a more rural part of northern tassie and anything ordered from inside the state would be about 3 days max from when it is actually sent, even with reguler post. Anything from the mainland is about a week reguler post. Amazon stuff is about a week and a half because Amazon is slow to ship. The only thing I can think of is she ordered something from international, which can take a while. The furnature thing is annoying, places either don't ship here or charge an arm and a leg (particulery the last couple of years)

My experience with getting stuff sent from Amazon US or UK to Hobart is that it takes about 2-3 weeks. A slightly longer wait compared to when I was in Sydney, but only by a few days. I find IKEA orders to Hobart are pretty slow but at least they deliver to Hobart. BTW, you might not find any seals at Cradle Mountain, but the views are nice😊

Tasmania, in general, doesn't have much of a transitory population. In some ways it's very much like the rural areas of the US and UK where people are born, die and spend much of their life in the same town. That makes it a lot harder to make friends because you're always the new person. Brisbane is a bit more fluid but somewhere like Airlie Beach (my other home) has so many new people that it's really easy to make friends. Plus it's really chill. In terms of delivery, Amazon in Brisbane is next day or at most 3 days; AliExpress, Banggood and Temu are all about the 2 to 3 week mark. For Airlie you need to add another 10 days on to each of those delivery timelines. I love the Freycinet Coast - Bicheno, Apollo Bay in Victoria and Airlie are the only places I really feel at home. Also Strahan on the West Coast is definitely worthwhile going to. It feels like it's perched on the edge of civilization.

Interesting points made, Ash. In Perth, many products are shipped from Sydney or Melbourne. As such, smaller items will take up to a week to arrive. More bulky items, expect at least 2-3 weeks. It teaches us patience!! However, my son recently purchased something from China and that took less than a week!?

I live 50 ks out of Launceston and order online from Amazon and other places and most stuff arrives in a week max. 2 weeks from Launceston to hobart is a piss take. That's the next day, usually or 2 at the most. Your experience isn't typical. Yeah, if you order off Amazon UK or US it'll take longer. Yes you need a car for a 68,000 sq km island with half a million population. Tassie doesn't need to change much, especially seeing the 'changes' blighting the rest of the planet. Enjoy Melbourne.

For me personally,re-Amazon. If it's from Aus it takes 1-3 days generally. And if from the US it takes 8-14days. And I get free delivery because I have primevideo. You can get same day delivery in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth metro areas and suburbs. Regional probably not. I think the long delivery 🚚 is a Tas thing due to remoteness separated by sea. I think all capital cities should have a free shuttle service around the city loops. Brisbane has a free bus and ferry. Melbourne has a free tram. I think Adelaide may have something. Not sure about other places. I've noticed you look more relaxed and at peace and happy lately. Your demeanor on here at least. Whatever has shifted or changed for you is working 🙂 from my observations from afar lol.

I ordered car parts from Georgia (US) and they got here in Brisbane in 7 days. My brother ordered parts from The Netherlands on Monday afternoon and they were in Sydney by Friday morning. My wife ordered some stuff from Sydney, we tracked it to Perth, Brisbane, then Darwin and eventually back to Brisbane. It took a month. BTW, I haven't yet noticed you mentioning any scars Tasmanians have on their shoulders. Right for males and left shoulder for females. They're usually about same length as the width of their neck. It's an operation carried out soon after birth.

Postage definitely takes forever to get here! To the point where I think I've been ripped off every time I order anything online. It's a combination of coming from China or the U.S. plus having to then get to Tasmania. Job wise, we have a shortage, nationwide, of nurses, midwives, doctors and vets. There are always jobs in aged care or disability support. Getting a permanent job here is difficult. Many positions are casual, which makes it hard for anyone who wants to apply for a loan.

Hi Ashley, would love to know your thoughts on where you would buy a property around Hobart having lived there for a while now? What's your experience of finding a rental? I work in the legal profession and am in talks about moving there for a full time role from Brisbane. I'm very torn about what to do. I'm 39, single and have dogs. Have you struggled in winter there? So many questions I want to ask!

I got quite a shock when I moved back to Hobart from Sydney and had to go to hospital for surgery. I used the Private Hospital system and was disappointed to find that it is not up to the standard of Private Hospitals in Sydney. I couldn't see any difference between private and public because the facilities were no better. Having been to St Vincent's Private in Sydney where it's like checking in to a luxury hotel at reception and then your bags are carried to your CONFIRMED private room. No such comforts in Tasmania. No guarantee of anything. Unfortunately it won't get any better because that's all Tasmanians know and accept the lower standard. If there was more knowledge of what a real private hospital is there would be a greater chance of improvement. Not going to happen. The only saving grace is that both Private Hospitals have their own Emergency Departments (albeit limited hours) so you can go there and pay the fee and be treated sooner than waiting in the public system.

tasmania is rather like new zealand, i dont wish to offend but both places are a backwater, where people dont want change it makes it worse. the economies of both places are slow and not up to the required state for a bustling economy. i was in hobart a few years back walking through the main shopping complex, it was so quiet i asked the shop assistant if it was a public holiday . it wasnt., i havnt got the answers but both places need and deserve better. In contrast sydney melbourne and brisbane are bursting with tourism, business and progressing at a rate. brisbane and the gold coast with the coming olympics are full ahead.
