5 things I hate about being a Honda line tech mechanic

Good topic and good discussion. My biggest beef with the dealership setting is flat rate. It’s a scam, it often leads to needless corner-cutting, infighting, and every “good” ticket is like tossing a juicy steak above a group of wild hounds. I suppose dealership management loves it, but imo the people who invest so much time (and money in tools) to become experts at their trade deserve a much better, more stable pay structure.

Yea 100% believe the flat rate life can lead to some corners being cut to rack up as many hours as possible but not everyone is like that, I believe good and honest mechanics exist out there…finishing up Honda school to get a master tech title will for sure help those mechanics pay wise.

No excuse handing out your up sell to someone else. I am a Service Advisor, I take care of my Technicians because they take care if me. With you Technicians I do not make any money. All of my Techs Love me because I love them. At our dealership, Techs order their own parts from their laptop, as it should be. I also make sure all of my techs are paid book plus. That is another reason they love me. I used to be a technician so I know. I usually get a little extra time for jobs because I understand cleaning, prepping gasket surfaces, and removing rusted fasteners. I don't think anyone should be a service advisor without some technician experience, period.

I remember once changing a floor harness on a 2018 CRV, underneath the seats I’ve found half eaten sandwiches, it’s disgusting. To be fair, the 11th gen civics do have a known issue with with steering racks. I’ve replaced multiple due to too much preload on the input shaft, but that causes a notch feeling. In a small dealer like I’m at (5 techs, 2 advisors). We all work Monday to Friday 8-5. We can all keep track of who’s job was who’s. I personally also helped train our new parts guy, because in Esis we get the actual name of the part, where as in parts diagrams they only get a generic term. Engine oil pressure sensor, cvt driven pulley pressure sensor, ac pressure sensor, etc all are called the same thing in their diagrams. Even as a tech with 12 years experience, I still get confused looking at them at times because of how bad they are. It sucks when it happens, but I can perfectly understand it when parts are ordered wrong (unless it’s something obvious like left/right side or front/rear)

@@2zzlow I’m in Nova Scotia, Canada. Pretty rural area. I’ve worked at smaller shops in the past where it’s been only me and 2 other techs, but the largest shop I worked at was a GM dealership and it’s the biggest shop in my area. 9 techs, 2 apprentices, 2 advisors and 2 parts guys 😂

You can reuse the 1zz harness or make it easier and use a 2zz harness. Everything is pretty much bolt on, very easy swap if you have a donor or bought everything needed.

i think the hoarder issue is a honda thing. im sure if you were at acura it'd be a less occurrence. if someone else is taking your upsale for a air filter. im okay with it especially if im busy. However if it is a larger up sale, you better believe i'll be frustrated!
