    I agree with most of those ideas. A Multi-converter box would be great and even using the OpenGear standard would be a great way to implement the modular idea. My biggest issue with cameras is the use of EF and MFT. I was hired to my current job to build a brand new studio and so I don't have any EF or MFT lenses and I bought a Canon R5 which uses RF. A BMD Camera that uses RF or B4 would be great for a PTZ and even for their other cameras. A "Micro" control panel would be great and I work with a team that could so use that. They borrow my Advance Panel when they need it or else they use the software. But out of everything you mentioned the biggest thing they need to upgrade is their VideoHubs. I knew I needed one for the studio I built for my work and I have realized that even the 40x40 is not enough for me. You run out quickly and you want to future proof so you always want to get 4K or 6K capable devices and for BMD not to have something bigger then 40x40 for 4K or 6K is a huge problem. So hopefully BMD will see this and listen to their user base. The IBC announcements from them was disappointing to say the least.

    I would LOVE if Blackmagic made a dedicated ATEM Macro's Panel (maybe a ATEM Mini sized device with a small screen and 20-30 programmable LCD-based buttons) that was network based and allowed you to control multiple ATEM devices (Mini, Television Studio) and was designed to trigger ATEM Macros. This would eliminate the need for programs like Companion or a PC or software solutions like MixEffect for iOS. Having an all hardware based solution would be ideal for remote work without relying on a computer or software and having tactile buttons would make life easier. It annoyed me that there are only 8 macro buttons on the Extreme (and none on the Mini's).

    I was also going to mention the DMON-4S. It's a nice converter for converting 4 SDIs to 4 HDMIs. My only complaints about it were the use of the mini HDMI, which I fully understood because you couldn't fit 4 full-sized HDMI on it, and the fact that HDMI 1 was on the other side from 2-4, which I'm also sure was a layout constraint.

    An interesting video channel to help a manufacturer. Not that I think they need too much help, and a lot of the ideas below are simply to make particular setups easier. Now the one that interests me, that is a "proper" PTZ camera at a Blackmagic price. There are quite a few makers in this field, but most of them are from the security market and lack the features of a remote studio camera. As most may not be familiar with this the features are: full, proper servos on all 3 axes with a control protocol that is like a broadcast zoom, in other words full rate and acceleration control by joystick or whatever. Thus a gentle zoom in on a live shot, track movement subtley etc. The cheaper competition cannot be moved during a shot, or even zoomed because they have speed only servos (usually with a fixed minimum speed response with instant acceleration) and non-parfocal zooms (focus is not constant with zoom position). Unfortunately all these features are not simple or cheap, which is why broadcast lenses cost so much compared to essentially still camera lenses etc.

    I'm seeing professionals moving away from SDI to network based protocols. While I don't see BMD adopting NDI and Dante, there are others or maybe invent their own. Personal experience has taught me it's easier to work with network cable than coax. It's smaller, lighter, and takes up less space. It's also easier to hide and cover trip hazards. As it stands I personally run one set of network cables to PTZs for control. Then I end up running a second set on hdmi extenders to my extreme iso. In theory I should just be able to run one for each cam if the ATEM would have native rtmp support and be able to assign those feeds to camera buttons. Even better if I could use macros in the ATEM to trigger camera presets. None the less network solutions are the wave of the future and I think BMD needs to start moving in that direction.

  • @WolfsHaven

    Alternatively make a separate box that accepts multiple rtmp feeds and outputs it to hdmi and or sdi outputs for shorter runs to the ATEM.

    I think BMD needs to make a video camera with a built in lens. Not every live production needs, or ought to have that razer thin DOF, cinematic looks, with cinematic/photo lenses. Slap together something like the Sony PXW-z90V and I believe you got the beginnings of reaching more amature/semi-pro live productions. Everything about that camera would be controllable through software too, even zoom. I even think if it had both HDMI and SDI output, and then a USB-C ports for hand controls and ethernet adaptors, now all aspects of this camera would be able to live within the BMD environment. It would essentially be a URSA Super Mini Pro? Built in lens, 1" sensor, constant f2.8 aperture, 20x zoom with digital zoom, VND filter, built in xlr handle, 4.6K up to 120fps, nice dynamic range, and dual USB-c ports for handle controls and recording on an SSD. Idk how this can be done without sabotaging their existing URSA line, so obvious changes in design would need to happen...

    6) Instant Replay Device

  • @RyanBoni

    @RyanBoni

    Жыл бұрын

    I have a strange feeling that this is coming! When they announced the ATEM SDI Extreme ISO, I was thinking about how that device is getting so close to a stand-alone multi-camera replay device. If you take the SDI Extreme ISO body, it can already take 8 cameras in. It does ISO recording of all of them already, so that would be your recording/buffer of each camera for the replays. And the switcher would allow for transitioning between multiple replays through a dissolve or effect (or perhaps it has 2-channel output or more.) So, now all you need is variable speed playback and a way to save clips into playlists. Perhaps a Hyperdeck Shuttle that snaps alongside the SDI Extreme ISO body for a playback channel, which would also give you jog/shuttle functionality. Then replace a couple of the unnecessary buttons with mark in, mark out and a few other replay-oriented buttons and put a small T-bar on it for varying the speeds and you have an 8-camera in, 1 or 2-channel out standalone replay device in the same body size as an SDI Extreme ISO.

All the screens in my studio are HDMI, as well as the cameras and the computers, so there is definitely a need for converting several signals both in and out of the switcher. I agree with everything BUT the BMD PTZ camera. This is a use case for it, especially in an ATEM echo system, however I think BMD would botch the implementation. BMD seems to do very well with focused equipment while a PTZ camera has quite a bit of functionality that needs to work together to be a good option compared to other PTZ cameras on the market. Without NDI a PTZ camera loses a lot of functionality and BMD hasn't shown any desire to license NDI. A multi converter option would be high on my list of things to have. Very high. Probably tops on my list right now. 1U or 2U rackmount please.
