No deal breakers though but things to keep in mind if you're interested in this camera. Despite these "issues", I still believe that the M6 is one of the best options for shooting film out on the streets.
Hope you enjoy the episode, see you in the next video! :)

I’m using the ‘Leitz’ logo version of the M6, and all I can say is that I’m loving it. No matter the weather, it still holds really good after these years. Sometimes, but really just some times I can find myself in the viewfinder problem that you’ve pointed out.

#3: Agree, the patch flare is the biggest culprit on my black M6, too. It should have been a Leica recall since Leica started cutting cost there and put parts in which simply didn't work out fine in the viewfinder. But it never happened, so you have to find your workarounds or go with a M7 for example where this issue rarely ever occurs. To release the stuck focus after the issue occurred on the M6, I shake a bit my camera and it goes back to normal. I also cut some polarized foil from a 3D glass and taped it with Scotch tape carefully on the borders of the foil onto the middle patch window. It will darken a bit the frame lines but reduces the patch flare > 50%. #4: I believe there is something wrong with your camera how it uses power from the battery. I use my battery for 3 years now without any issue or even replacement needed in the M6! Likely you have some internal shortage in the wiring somewhere - you should send the camera in (at a third party Leica camera repair mechanic, not Leica itself!) for a CLA and checkup.

On my old M6 I was looking to upgrade the finder to the MP version and I was quoted under $400 from 3 different repairs shops in the US. Don't think it's worth doing on its own, but if I was sending it in for CLA tacking on that upgrade is probably worth it.

I had the same concern with the shutter dial on my MP but I’ve learned to change it fairly easily with only my index finger. Try and practice and you should get it (considering it’s the same as my MP).

I find the M6 too slow for street photography unless zone focus. My light meter battery lasts years although I do not use it as much as you. I am surprised that yours runs down in a couple of days. I try to keep mine in bulb mode when not using to deactivate the meter. Looking forward to the next video And thanks for the signed zine of Cairo.

I did the MP finder upgrade on my M6 when I had to send my camera in for a CLA. And it made the viewfinder sooo much better. But then the camera came back with light leaks and it just became a whole issue that was really frustrating if sending my camera back and forth trying to get the problem fixed. Not to mention that I ruined shots because I didn’t expect there to be a light leak and took the camera on a trip to Hong Kong right away.

I've had some lightleaks happen to me, which bother me a lot, the Rangefinder flares aren't great too. At the beginning I thought I'd resent the close focus limitations, but since I never shoot that close it's not an issue. But overall I just love the camera and what it has done to me and the images I've shot with it. I just have to keep fishing my wallet out of the air since it's constantly being drained.

Hello Sir, Many thanks for sharing your experience as a pro photog with the Leica M6. I have a black M6 (not TTL) which I bought for a (very) good price. Before hand, I had bought a silver TTL version which was "like new" condition. OK: why buy a second one ? Well, mainly because I felt the black was just a bit more stealthy and also because beeing far less expensive, I could really bring it with me everywhere and not be too much worried about possible re-sale value. I ended up putting my TTL silver version for sale and got a very very good price for it. So as far as money goes: I'm happy. I used the difference to indulge in a fine (and new) Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 which combined with an old Voitlander 28mm f1.9 completes my street photo kit (but I do own a perfectly functionnal and recently CLA'd Leica M3 on which I leave more or less all the time a Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 which I can't seem to part from since I've owned it for longer than either M6's ) Although I'm in no way shape or form a pro photog, I have something to say which I don't like very much about the M6 non TTL version: the shutter speed does not turn in a logical way as to the leds of the light meter (the TTL version turns in a logical way: if the arrow points to the left, use your index to turn the shutter dial to the left and you'll get a correct exposure). Beeing used to no light meter with the M3, it is not that much of a big deal but I thought it might be interesting for a buyer to note that difference... Appart from that, I have yet to encounter focusing issues and never using a flash have no problem there either. I have yet to try a Leica MP to know if the huge price difference is really worth it but I must say I like my M6 very much (although a bigger shutter dial AND more logical rotation direction would make me even happier). Thank you again for youre insights. I have still to have my first batch of Silbersalz35 to get processed (they'll actually be on their way tomorrow) but thanks for that advice in earlier video as well. :)

    1. The tripod mount, I can see how that would be a problem for some people. 2. I don’t use my tripod much, if ever with my M, so for me, not an issue. 3. The shutter speed dial, I use an M2 as well, so it’s nice having a dial that spins the same direction. The size doesn’t bother me much, but I have known it to feel a little stiff when my fingers are cold. If it really bugs you, have you considered just getting a TTL version? 4. Battery.. I’ve had the same batteries in my M6 for probably close to two years. I shoot a few rolls per month. I think you should get that looked at. 5. Viewfinder flare. When I got a cla a few months back, Sherry Krauter did the MP upgrade for me. I think it was around $350. Well worth it. That 1000 euros must be Leica official prices? Or is it just more expensive in Europe? The only things I don’t like about the M6 is the leatherette gets slippery. I realize there are grips available, but I don’t want one on my M. I never really thought about it that much until I got my M2 which grips like sandpaper... hah. Also, this could be fixed with a different viewfinder magnification, but I can’t see the 28mm framelines at all because I wear glasses. My workaround is to use an external voigtlander viewfinder, which I can see. It’s not ideal, but it works.

  • @therealsirrobin

The price for the viewfinder upgrade was a rough estimate from a Leica Shop. Even for let's say 400 Euros I wouldn't do it, simply to justify the purchase of a MP at some point in the future. 😂

Nice Video. At least one Problem can be fixed very easily. Take a look at the Leica M Grip with the part number 14405. The grip is mounted on the original tripod mount, but the tripod mount in the grip is centred with the lens axis. Leica Parts are never cheap, but you can find these grips used on eBay for less than 100€.

Have you ever considered an m5? I have an m6 and M2 and the quality difference between the 2 is quite real. I’ve read the m5 is perhaps the best actual shooter in leica land and would likely solve some of your issues regarding the shutter dial and rangefinder patch. I have to send my m6 in for service because the film counter is jammed and the meter is off by a stop. I may sell it and get the m5 after the m6 comes back. We shall see.

some SOLUTIONS: tripod mount: just use the Hand Grip and the u get a mount in the middle ( jeffmellody.com/blog/2014/9/5/leica-m6-grip) Viewfinder flare: just add a color transparency on the little focusing window ( ibb.co/9VCKc30 and kzread.info/dash/bejne/pa6ZxtuHcpefdKg.html ) Battery: I personally use no built in meter. I go by the sunny 16 rule or an external one BUT I used to have the same problem and it turned out to be for the following reason: when u have ur M6 in your bag and the button touches the inside of the bag the battery runs out cause it is working all the time. BUT if you do not advance your film to the next frame the camera is actually then OFF and you don' t have this problem anymore. I hope you find it all useful www.flickr.com/photos/antonispizzios/ instagram.com/apitsios/

The only thing that really is a pity in my opinion is the small shutter dial (pre TTL). I agree that it is sometimes hard to use. All other things that you mention don't really bother me. I own two M6 and neither of them have the battery drain that you describe. You should get it checked out. The battery lasts for a long time usually.

  • @bluur101
    @bluur1014 жыл бұрын

I suspect battery-drain is because the electronics on the meter pcb are failing. On my M6 it (I use one CR1/3N cell in place of the two silver-oxide) lasts a very long time, to the point where I change it from caution rather than need. However, the camera had a major service before I bought it and i think the pcb was replaced with a new one. You are certainly not the first person to have the battery problem. I'm fortunate to also have an M3, supposedly with a similar viewfinder / rangefinder assembly to the MP, and any differences between the two seem quite rare. it's possible that I have got to automatically tilting the M6 without realising though. As you say, it's not a 'deal-breaker'.

Just FYI for anyone unfamiliar with the Leica M range, the earlier models, M3, M2, M4, M4-P, M4-2, don't have the rangefinder patch flare, although there are other potential things to dislike like the rewind crank & loading mechanism on M3 and M2, and of course no meter in the body. Then there's the M5 which people love or hate in different ways.

  • @ccoppola82

josh vick I think it depends what your glass investment is in regards to the Fuji. If you have thousands in glass, the m10 makes sense. If not, I would grab the xpro2. It’s a fantastic camera. I bought an MP-240 to shoot hybrid with an M2 or m6 with a digital companion, however when I just grab a digital it’s often the xpro2. The 16mm 2.8 and 35mm f2 (Or the mitakon 35mm 0.95 for portraits or extreme low light) are generally what I’m out with. Both lenses go for 400 or less...both small, weather sealed, and lightning fast AF. I DO have the official M to X mount if I want to use my leica glass on it (that’s what my original use was) but honestly the Fuji glass and Kit is fantastic. Film sims are HIGHLY customizable to the point where I often am shooting Jpg only. With the xpro3 coming out soon the xpro2 should go on deep discount.

Bit late now, but anyway; Try to hire the Leica's for a few days first and see which works best for you. It's all personal preference. Thorsten Overgaard has a thorough breakdown on the M9. Also has a KZread channel. www.overgaard.dk/leica-M9-digital-rangefinder-camera.html Basic differences between M9 and M10: M9 is a thicker body, not great at higher ISO, but some people love the CCD sensor look. M10 body size is closer to film Ms, better ISO, more mega pixels etc. Can add an EVF in the hot shoe. Advantage of the X-Pro2 would probably be lower price, option to use the EVF, and film simulations if you'd rather just shoot jpegs and straight out of camera, rather than RAW.

The problem I have with my M6 is some M lenses just cannot be mounted it; two examples are Leica 28m f2.8 ASPH bought new last year and Leica 35mm f2 7 elements from the 80s. Turned halfway and encountered too much resistance. These two lenses have no problem mounting on other M bodies like my MP, M4, or M240. The same M6 can take other Leica lenses like 90mm f2, 50mm f2 and 35m f1.4 without any problem. Strange but true.

I don't own any Leica. I do own a couple of old rangefinder cameras, but no Leica; those are simply too expensive for me and I can't justify the cost. Until I win the lottery that is 😁 There's something weird about those cameras from late 70's and early 80's; Olympus OM3 & OM4, alongside OM2sp (which I own) are suffering from substantial battery drainage. In less than a week in the camera no matter what I do batteries are pretty much gone. Something what later models (OM3Ti & OM4Ti) corrected. By the way, you should really try at least one of those latter models. I guess you'd very much like OM3 and OM3Ti, since those are completely mechanic, apart from the light meter and self timer...

Yes, the shutter speed dial is not optimal. Strange because the M5 has a dial that’s bigger and can be comfortably turned with the thumb. That’s why I prefer the M5.

Damn. I thought I was getting disillusioned because my battery only last like for a month. And every forum people’s saying that theirs lasts for months, year. Could be the battery circuit or something. In some forums I saw that the m6 non-ttl lasts for more than 100 rolls. I only get about 6/7 rolls and every time I shoot a frame I don’t wind the film. Nice video bro!!

@@cfagil If you need to be quiet, and the batteries run out in cold conditions, it will be a big con for you. And the money you saved won't make the camera function differently. Being dependent on electronics that are nearly 20 years old to wind the film is a weakness. www.cameraquest.com/konicam.htm CameraQuest will tell you the VF isn't as bright as an M6, and neither are the framelines. Not to mention that your eye has to be perfectly centred in the VF for the RF patch to be accurate. I've read the same on 35mmc and JCH. JCH also talks about how the lower magnification doesn't help focus accuracy, and neither does the shorter effective base length. However, do enjoy your camera.

I bought a secondhand M6 two months after I made the above feedback a year ago. Still standby what I said. I bought my M6 partly for fun(a GAS synonym) and partly as an insurance/investment. So far the increase in value of the M6 has covered more than the risk of my Konica's total electronic failure. Given the same lens, film and photographer, both cameras produce exactly the same level of image quality. By the way, my favourite Leica is still my 1938 Leica IIIa; what a piece of engineering marvel. Bring a big smile to my face everytime when I shoot with it. A guess a good camera is the one you love to shoot with regardless of its many shortcomings. In the case of a IIIa, no autofocus, pain to load a film, no meter, dim separate viewfinder and rangefinder, a fixed 50mm frameline, what else have I missed? I still love it regardless.

I had a silver M6 and did not experience the battery drainage probems you have at all. Something must be off in the lightmeter circutry. Things I didn't like: * Film advance lever tip and ocular are plastic. Yuck! * Expensive. * Light meter indicator is too distracting. * Cluttered viewfinder I've upgraded to the m2 which was half the price and am much happier :)

Your camera is screwed up, get it fixed. I change the battery in my m6 about every couple of years even if I don’t switch it off by going to B. If you want to move the tripod socket get the accessory grip (I have the M-Grip by GMP products) both the Leica and the GMP move the socket to the center. The MP finder is the way to go and it’s not €1000, I had mine done for $300 when they first offered it years ago a friend of mine just got it done and I don’t believe that he paid more than $500, try getting the conversion from leica USA maybe it will be less (while it’s there you can get your meter fixed). Flash?? On an M6??? Use something else, preferably with a leaf shutter perhaps a Rollie or a Yashica Mat.

No camera is perfect! My M3 is the best! small shutter dial is OK. The viewfinder accurate as a SLR! Loading on removable spool is most secure. M6 viewfinder lines are lousy. Way more in photo.. Tripod hole can never be Centre unless one adds a grip. I love the grip. All said and one bought new in 2000, so 21 years old.. It was expensive but how many digital models have come and gone, including Leica. RF flare is easy to adjust. Mask one window. With all it's faults it's still the best camera for my needs.
