Supplements can be a great way to help improve your triathlon training and racing performance whilst meeting your body's nutritional requirements.

With such a huge array of supplements to choose from and all of the manufacturers doing their best to convince you that you need their product it can be difficult to know where to start. How do you know if you need to take a supplement? That’s a tough question.
In the ideal world you’d have a blood test but that’s not a realistic option for most of us, so beyond that it is a bit of trial and error.
Start by looking at your diet. If you have a normal healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and do just a small amount of training then there should be no need to supplement your diet. If however, you are putting your body through a lot of stress for example training for an IM or you do not get a good balance from your food then supplements could help make up that nutritional deficit.
In this video, Heather explains a little more detail about what a supplement is and goes through her top picks that can help you improve your triathlon training and racing performance.

I am getting vitamins D and B12, whey and hay proteins from Emma's GCN Oat Cuisine recipes. Also I'm trying to get off the factory packaged supplements since most, including all other "supplements" mentioned by Heather, can be "found" in natural foods, and what is most important: those will be in the biologicaly active isoforms, not like "B12" inside the pills for example. I'd be glad to watching GTN video about athlete substantial nutrients from the real food. Collagen peptides in beeth broth, phosphorus in eggs, calcium in canned sardines, and B12/D in cod liver (yes - that tasty liver per se, not oil supplements, though they have B12 and D3 in addition to Omega-3). Supplementing with the video about athlete hostile foods (with ingestion timing consideration of course) would be fantastic too.

Hey GTN - Nutrition question: We’ve all heard about the health risks associated with having too much sugar in one’s diet. But what are triathletes in need of training and race fuel to do? Does the exercise mitigate the risks? Or should we be more judicious with our gels and sports drinks?

I have a friend who studies nutrition at Uni with a specialism in diabetes. I have asked him about this, endurance athletes are not at higher risk of diabetes as the sugar is being used up so doesn't put strain on the pancreas to produce large amounts of insulin to bring sugar levels down. The main concern is dental health. Our bodies are designed to function on glucose and other sugars. Natural sugars are preferable to refined sugars. But yeah, in short, and as I understand it, there are no real dangers of consuming sugar and carbs for athletes provided you practice good dental care.

Omega three very important. Though fish has it to varying degrees. All fish eat algae that is where the Omega 3's come from. What is more important is the ratio of Omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids. Supplement Omega 3 and eat lots of greens daily spinach in particular. I subscribe to GBOMBS as the base, greens beans mushrooms berries seeds ( and nuts) Dr Joel Fuhrman's advice, note he also allows meat, fish and eggs. Not that I eat any of them but that's my personal choice.

There are 1000 micrograms in 1 milligram :) typical milligrams of caffeine in one cup of coffee is about 90 or 90,000 micrograms..

Hey Heather, I should take iron supplements to help with my magnetic personality ;) seriously though, I absolutely and thoroughly disprove of your comment about vegans not getting enough nutrition. The only nutrient we cant get naturally from food is vitamin B12 because it actually comes from soil. In fact none vegans should really supplement B12 in that case because due to factory farming, most animals are not able to graze naturally but are fed processed foods missing out on certain natural micro and macro nutrients. Furthermore, you would probably find that a greater number of vegans and to a lesser extent vegetarians eat food to a higher nutritional value that omnivores simply due to paying close attention to what we eat. Personally I am proud to have been vegan for several years. i recently turned 45 and am in better health than i was in my early 20s however even if being vegan was less healthy i would not change my mind due to the horrific cruelty in the meat and dairy industry of which whey protein powder is a part of. thanks

  • @martinespinio

    5 жыл бұрын

Well, actually B12 is a bacteria that lives in the soil, since we thoroughly wash all our food we also wash it away. Animals that eat grass usually take it directly from there, and if we eat them then we get the B12. The problem is, there is hardly any grass-fed meat nowadays, so you should know that virtually every animal is given B12 supplements, so B12 from "animal source" is actually supplemented! 90% of B12 supplements produced in the world are fed to livestock.
