I love centers, however, t's time. Not enough time, considering the extra things teachers are expected to work with like in Jump Math, there is the Number Talks about 5 minutes, then doing exercise worksheets or extensions and activities. I would consider these for Math centers then. Then there is

Then there are the different levels of student needs in my class. Their reading levels are between at-grade level students, then those who struggle with comprehension so they re-do gr. 4, gr. 3 and gr. 1 & 2 readers. It's spec. ed. activities in math support.

Accountability to finish and do a good job. What's their motivation if centers aren't graded? Easy way to have students keep data on skills completed? Thanks!

Honestly, my kids didn’t care sometimes even if something was graded. Making it fun with centers was the way I got them engaged.

What do you do for students who quickly finish the centers? I'm a student teacher and there's a few students who are quick with the work and then all that's left for them to do is Prodigy on the computer, which they sometimes get sick of.

If it’s a handful of students who finish early repeatedly, my guess is that the center is too easy for them. I have differentiated centers, so I can grab more complex (or less complex) centers for the kids who need it. Other than that, you can have containers of extra centers with reusable math games. I like the plastic keys with the shoelaces so they can check their work. It can be spiral review and doesn’t have to be changed out every time since it’s an “extra” center.

I struggle with being able to concentrate on the students in my small group with any noise going on in the other stations. I have started out with independent work and I have asked the student to be at a volume level 0 if they are not with me, yet I also use the system 3B4Me, which means they may need to ask a classmate a question. In the future I invision adding stations where students work together, so the level 0 is unrealistic. However, I get overstimulated by the noise of the students, and I lose track with my small group. I also have trouble with time management

You’re not alone in these struggles, and it’s even harder with the larger class sizes. If you can do partners instead of groups, that can help keep the noise level down. The bigger the group, the louder and more movement there is.

I need to start using centers . I am struggling with what materials to put in. It seems like a lot of work for the teachers. If I can get materials to start with then that would be great .

It can be time-consuming to find resources if you’ve never done it before. I have a full library already done if you’re interested! www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Year-Long-Bundle-of-Literacy-Centers-2nd-5th-Grade-ELA-Centers-7320780?st=558f72fa539b1d7baec788969be9fc1d

Staying on task independently and completing work on their own.... It seems like this phase of scholars expect teachers to show them everything and model all the time... no motivation to try it on their own... they give up too easily.. Michelle
