5 Signs You’ve Met a Sociopath But Just Don’t Know It

Psychopathy and sociopathy are perhaps two of the most confused terms in the fields of psychology and criminology. While these terms sound very similar, almost identical, they do, in fact, differ in their characteristics. Both disorders are categorized as Antisocial Personality Disorders in the The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as they share major characteristics.
If you're curious whether or not you've met or even dated a sociopath, here are some telltale signs.

Yeah for sure! We're thinking of revisiting this topic again since it's been like 1 year we even did a video on sociopathy. Shane is likely not a sociopath nor Jake. Usually, you can get gut feelings about things, especially in the very beginning of an interaction.

Some have the ability to feel shame or regret, which are both different from feeling guilt. When they do something wrong, they don't think, "Oh, this person didn't deserve this. Now I feel like an awful person." but rather they'll think, "I shouldn't have done this because now I'm going to get caught." "Now I will get in trouble." "This was a waste of my time." The way I differentiate these personality disorders are by comparing the disorder to Vampires or Werewolves. Most psychopaths have a very chilling calm, they can't feel anxiety or embarrassment aka Vampire like behavior. Sociopaths are usually triggered by something that causes their anger or irritability aka Werewolf type behavior

Had a “friend” that I’m sure was a sociopath thinking back. He was super charismatic, everyone loved him. If he was gonna be friends with you, you guys instantly clicked. Every girl loved him. But soon enough I kept seeing a darker side to him. He would talk about stealing from people he was totally cool to when he was around them. He would normalize it and get his friends to help him do whatever he wanted. He’d just cue you in like you were already part of it and he’d make sure he’d have said something little to put fear into you if you didn’t want to do it. Whenever people didn’t do what he wanted he’d immediately be thinking about hurting them. Later I found out when I was fighting with someone it turned out he’d been fueling both of us up because it was entertaining to him. Now everyone I know is done with him and he’s moved on to another group of people. It’s the way it goes. If someone makes you uneasy and you find yourself making excuses to stay around them, this is what you’re dealing with. Run, don’t listen to that empathetic voice. Just run

This is basically a documentary about my dad. Can’t describe how hellish my childhood has been. I turn 17 next week, and what with my resultant depression, anxiety, and severe ptsd, I’m still reaping the consequences of what my dad has done to me, or neglected to do. My future still seems extremely dark, but my hope is that I will, in maybe ten years or so, begin living a fulfilling and happy life, once I’ve escaped my trauma. If anyone suspects their partner of being a sociopath, you HAVE TO get as far away from them as you can. The harm it might do to you and your potential children is too great to describe. I know it will be hard, as sociopaths tend to get very attached to someone, without showing any concern for their wellbeing, but I promise you that it for the best. If you are thinking of giving birth to and raising children with a person like this, don’t. They will not change. They will not learn. Just get out as fast as you can.

The best way to deal with them is to cut all contact.Sad bit is , months after I cut contact I still believed that "I was the problem" and that every thing he had said about me was true. What a POS human. Sincerely hope no one else has to endure an experience with a sociopath.

She started manipulating me and lying to me a lot. Than she started being mean and using what she knew about me against me. She also has a huge ego and she thinks she’s better than everyone. She also doesn’t follow rules and always argues with authority figures. I am no longer friends with her because I’m tired of being manipulated and thrown under the bus.

My ex was a perfect example of a sociopath and I had the misfortune of living with him for over 5 years before I finally managed to set myself free. It was a true nightmare, especially for me as a person who has mental and self worth issues. He took the most advantage of me as he could and destroyed my self esteem. And for people saying that sociopaths act "normal" towards people they love... No, they don't. It might seem like that, but in reality they make that person their property and treat them as one, meaning: stalking, completely taking their privacy, manipulating and of course violence.

Shiva rides Cthulhu I'm very good friends with a diagnosed sociopath. While she is generally apathetic when it comes to the well being of other people, has a violent and extreme hatred for her enemies, and has sick thoughts sometimes she really likes me and treats me with kindness and respect. She constantly tells me that she's happy to have me in her life and she has never let you down. She's concerned about my safety and well being and wants the best for me. Not all sociopaths will treat you like shit and you can actually develop relationships with some of them.

N.K. Revolution Sorry to burst your bubble, but your diagnosed sociopath sounds like she's a very convincing actress in respect to you. As a person she has 'acquired', you are presently central to her world. More than likely, she believes or has adeptly perceived that there is a definite possibility of losing control over you IF she doesn't treat you respectfully. While there is a 'necessity' for you in 'her' life, she will probably continue to treat you well, very well, but only for her 'self'ish reasons, definitely not for your wellbeing. However, once the sociopath in your life perceives you as an enemy, an unneeded liability or some sort of danger, all bets are off. Make no mistake, you WILL see an instant change in her behavior toward you, and it will not be for the better. That warm, fuzzy vibe you get from her now will quickly evaporate as if it never existed, like the morning fog in bright sunlight, and that once well meaning, caring, protective, friendly demeanor (facade) will drop off like a Halloween mask being removed after the party is over. If that day comes, you WILL be treated just like all her other enemies, probably even worse. She will be angry with you for 'her' having wasted her time & energies on you, even though you probably have never demanded much, if anything, from her. More than likely, you are the 'giver' & she is the 'taker', even if you think it is a 'sharing' relationship. While having what appears 'to you' to be a close relationship, she is becoming amply equipped with 'possible ammunition' to use against you when, or if, in the future, the relationship fails, or to her perspective, you somehow fail her. Since she is now acting like you're an angel in her life & you are her life preserver, you have a long distance to fall in her eyes. I am sure you have probably naïvely shared many things already that you probably shouldn't have shared with a known sociopath. You assuredly have not accurately perceived the many dangers in doing so. But you have as You actually trust her, in her, & think she's sharing her thoughts, feelings & experiences with you honestly on an equal standing of trust & truth. As such, you obviously don't understand that, easily & instantly, you may be added to her 'enemy' list, without a second thought or a single blink of the eye on her part. She as a sociopath she can't help but lie, lie, lie, even if though omission or just portraying herself as only caring for you, while only despising those other people. Without a doubt, because of your mislaid trust, she will be able to do much more damage to your world than she ever could possibly do to any of her enemies. In her eyes, you will probably go from 'saint' status to being 'worse than the devil'. Take care to note of how she talks about & describes past relationships; undoubtedly, that's how she will 'one day' be describing yours. You've already said she's adversarial to her enemies. Take the time to analyze her present enemies & carefully tally the percentage of them with whom she was once on good terms with & whether or not she has anything good to say about any of her exes. Remember, unless your relationship with her lasts the rest of your lives, you're her next ex! Exfriend, exboyfriend, exgirlfriend, exBFF, whatever. More than likely, there will be retaliation for all of the wasted time that 'she' put into your failed relationship, whatever that relationship may be. Believe it or not, she may even put more energy in the post relationship war than she ever has into the relationship itself. Unless you're LUCKY enough that she chooses just to turn & walk away to search out a new emotional victim to feed off of... Time will tell. But for now, she'll continue to coo & pamper you & tell you oh-so-many nice things that she thinks you want to hear from her. She'll keep tickling your ears with words that'll keep you in line with her 'purpose' for you. For the time being, she IS happy to have you in 'her' life. She's selling you a product- her sincerity. Buyer beware!

WatchingMyLifeFlashB I just read her your response to my comment and she just sat there and laughed. She tells me things I don't want to hear from her all of the time (sometime things even about myself) and never has to lie or put on a facade as she is blunt and brutally honest. As for her enemies, she has never been on good terms with any of them and has hated them since they first came into her life. She also hasn't been on bad terms with her friends either and she has strong relationships with them that have lasted for several years and even for her whole life.

My soon to be ex-husband. I was looped into the cycle used in this video of peace and turbulence. I became so attached to the peaceful moments that when he dealt with his demons of family violence and addictions, I overlooked those demons and lived for the peaceful moments. It confused me thinking that this is how my marriage was gonna be. I was teaching myself to live through the though times to get through to the peaceful times. I fell into a trap of Learned Helplessness. He never once acknowledged the pain he caused me but instead blamed me for his DVs and DUIs. I could not believe he had the nerve to do that to me! I knew it was a blatant lie but appaled that he was actually going there! I finally got the strength to pull the plug on this 30 year relationship as my view of him begins to gain clarity. I also got the blame for that as well. According to him all he wanted was a family and I took that away from him but somehow he forgot how he inflicted pain on me for years! He didnt like that I took a stand.

Bex Ed I certainly despised him. He would shout and threaten me everyday, he would start fights with other students, petually insult me when I attempted to speak in class, bring weapons to school like knives, he enjoyed insulting teachers to the point where he made a young substitute cry and thought nothing of it, he would attempt to manipulate me on occasion through false acts of kindness when he wanted something from me, and he would instigate peer pressure by using other students to antagonize me for fun. So overall he was a bad kid who was likely sociopathic as he seemed to lack a lot empathy and had very shallow emotions.

My best friend... she is all kinds of messed up yet she guilt trips me to stay.. I hope she doesn’t find this Her mother is on and off with her abusive stepfather. Her parents are divorced, she tells me about how she would of already killed herself without me, claiming her mental disorders like anxiety and depression as hers and tells me about how every mental disorder, even that I have is so relatable for her, showing trashy evidence, even fucking Buzzfeed quizzes to support her evidence, she has ruined a lot for me and I have developed anxiety and i cannot talk about my suffrage. I try to leave ‘don’t leave me like everyone else’ it is very stressful and she always talks about how all the other people she know are stupid and idiots and how we are much better. She loves to use people and I have no idea if she is using me, she mooched off her father to get An iPhone 8 and promised him she would try to do something (she never specified anything) she will always brush off anything I try to say to her, saying she has much worse, and I guess she does but that’s not the point... she always talks about if she can have her way what will she do, I have ADD and anxiety with Alice in wonderland syndrome which causes me hallucinations when I have migraines and difficulty telling dreams and reality apart. She always blames me when things go wrong talking about how I’m crazy because of my mental disorders. She puts me down and undermines my confidence in the strangest of ways ‘wow you ran in a time faster than before! Too bad your muscle deficiency causes you to be too slow anyway’ she mocks me while complimenting me about things that are wrong with me, while complaining about how people are trash for not valuing her enough because of her disorders. I try and help her the best I can empathizing with her and I could spend all night looking for information to help her, because she is set on being skinnier to the point of starving her self, and I can give her all the information in the world and all she would say is ‘whatever I had 700 calories yesterday’ this drives me to the point of tears and panic attacks and I try to leave, but I *cant* not sure if narcissism or sociopathic. I don’t know what to do

Stop being friends with her. I know it sounds harsh, but she is adding more negativity into your life, and doesn’t seem like she is even grateful for you. And even if her problems seem worse to you, that doesn’t mean your problems are unimportant. Don’t let her guilt trip you for you to stay. I am a very empathetic person as well, and just like you, it’s hard for me to let go of the negative people in my life because I really want to help them, and be there for them, idk out of pity I guess, which they take advantage of. Don’t let her take advantage of you anymore, and it’s also pretty shitty that she uses your disorders against you. You don’t deserve that. You deserve a friend(s) who would be there for you, just as you would be there for them. The relationship you have with her is toxic, and I advise you to let her go. You *can* let her go, something might be stopping you from doing it, but you can, it’s just really difficult for you to.

This video made me realize im sociopath. I dont feel guilt no matter what i do. I always find a way to justify everything ive done and i have many times manipulated someone to take the blame. I dont feel sorry for anyone and i can cry whenever its needed for me to success. Only thing i dont see my self in this video is physically harming others. But i lash out in anger and destroy stuff and even hurt myself, never other people because i would get in trouble.

My ex best friend was a sociopath and she lived with me and my family for 6 months. At the last ~2 weeks of her stay she stopped being nice since she knew we wouldn't be of use since she would be moving out soon. That made us realize what she has been doing to us the whole time. (How she manipulated us-lived with us for free but did nothing to pait it off like helping around the house, while she manipulated her father to send her money which she spent on clothes). The worst is i cant tell any of my friends because they wouldn't believe me. Im scared tbh

So at first I thought it was pretty cool then around week 5 he started saying things that were crazy to me by week 6 he started joking about hitting me when I got offended he acted like I was the crazy one. He would yell and get really angry over irrational things. My car was messed up and I was a hour away from my family. He was so controlling it scared me! @@Bubblegumfunfunfun Well, they shouldn't take pride NOR be ashamed in my opinion. It's just fact. Children and teens need to make an effort to be seen and have all their needs met, or else they will remain narcissistic into adulthood. Narcissism occurs when a child or teen haven't been sufficiently seen and loved by their parents for who they are, just for what they do and how they look. For example, they were only noticed and praised excessively when they did well, like in a sport or any talent that makes the family or parent look good. But the child in itself wasn't appreciated. So for the rest of their life, they replicate that need for admiration and to be seen, and hope to be loved finally. They are inherently insecure in their true character as adults.

@@MX76er That's what I'm trying to figure out. I discovered that I was lacking some things from my childhood. I wouldn't say I'm a narssisist, but I have some traits. Most people more or less outgrow it in their late teens and early twenties. If not, you might be interested in really examening your childhood. What did I miss? Was I jelous of my sibling? What attitude did my parents have to me? Did they believe in me? What were their expectations of me? And now, when do I get jelous? Where am I insecure? The idea is to identify what hurt you, what you lacked, and then try to empathize with the child you were and who was hurt. Cry and grieve. This means reconnecting with yourself, and will give you a new sense of security. I have done this, and it takes long and is very hard. I cried in ways I didn't know I could. For hours. Some say adult narssisism can't be fixed, but I'm unsure. Really bad cases are terrified of facing themselves and most likely doesen't want "help". If someone wants help I would assume they are just hurt and insecure. Check out Daniel Mackler here on youtube, he talks about childhood "trauma" and narscisism.

I can certainly relate to those traits. I've dated at least two women with those characteristics. They caused me a lot of emotional pain, which made me so distressed that I had,at least once, an episode of derealization. And wasn't high on anything! They also lead me to bankruptcy! I guess I let it happen because I was lacking romantic love and my self-esteem was very low. Well,as you showed on the video, these people simply know your vulnerability and profit from it... thank God I'm on my feet again!!

Each one you have increases the likelihood you have more. For example, I might sound like I'm claiming to be special when I have three, but the most common are two or three, if you have any.

The problem with learning these videos is that I haven't come across any that teach a person to think in anything buy a linear way. People's personalities are dynamic and they engage differently under different circumstances. Perfectly normal people behave this way from time to time. It's the recurrent pattern that is the identifier, not an easily remembered singular instance. Everyone shares in these traits to some degree and if you're worried about yourself or someone else you should seek help with a professional. These are basic information videos, not a means of self diagnosis. That is an entirely different, and nuanced skill set that takes an entire doctorate to become reliable with, not something you are going to get in a 5 minute clip. A lot of these traits are also exhibited by people with ADHD, particularly the impulsivity. Please upvote this so people (especially kids) on here aren't getting themselves needlessly ensnared in a damaging self-narrative!
