5 Signs Of A Dark Empath, Not Psychopath

While the term psychopath is not an official mental health diagnosis, it is used in clinical setting to mean someone who show signs of antisocial personality disorder. Antisocial personality disorder is the official clinical term for someone who has a pattern of using, manipulating and violating the rights of others. One thing that was highlighted in an abnormal psychology class is that psychopath actually have empathy, but they use it for their own gains. They manipulate others by using their ability to validate others for their own agenda. In a previous video, we covered dark empaths. Dark empath is a relatively new term referring to someone who also knows how to use empathy for their personal gains. However, there are differences between a psychopath and dark empath. Watch this video learn these interesting differences, and protect yourself from life difficult situations.
Dark empaths are people who have a high level of cognitive empathy only, not emotional empathy or compassionate empathy. They don’t possess the ability to provide wholehearted concern the way full empaths do. This is because, despite the fact that they are high in empathy, they are also high in the dark traits of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. One might mistake them as psychopaths because of their similarities. But here are a few ways dark empaths are actually quite different from psychopaths.
Disclaimer: If you suspect you or someone you know possess some of these signs, we recommend further research and also seeking help from a professional.

Sounds like slippery slope to justify using mental torture. Knowing how it works to combat and neutralize such atrocious behavior is one thing. Using that knowledge to inflict it yourself is another. We're not talking about weaponry here. We're literally discussing morality and mentality. If your solution is to be as fucked up as the person you're targeting, then your own morals and mentality should also be scrutinized. If you are saying that none of that matters as long as the ends justify the means, you're already seduced to the dark (empathy) side. You just are in denial about it. Or in this specific case, literally trying to twist the message and glorify it instead. Like holy fucking shit that's a major red flag.

Ugh, let's not demonize people - I feel like we forget that people are often overlapping these different labels (with exception to clinical diagnosis ... maybe...) at any given moment and perhaps what is reflected are the most noticeable traits to us, rather than our diagnosing a label like 'dark empath'. What about the person who originated as an empath, went through a period of life that molded them to be toxic towards others and then in time they grew out of it?

  • @Psych2go

Yes, for sure. The goal is not to demonize people, but to help bring into awareness some key differences so we can better navigate the world. @@Psych2go I think what clicked in my head at the time of writing was the use of the descriptor 'dark' to connotate the kind of empath that manipulates. 'Dark' being the way to often describe 'badness' or 'evil' and all those associations. I know that for many this might be unimportant or trivial, but it's something that happens a lot in how we talk about things and it was important enough for me to avoid approaching it directly and instead displace my feelings onto 'labels' as that overarching idea, haha. I guess I'm worried about how people use information to discriminate - which is something I as an anxious person, am over-focusing on something I cannot really/fully control.

I don't mind it nor do I see anything wrong with it... but I know that many people will have a problem with it. TBH, I don't really care. Nor do I think that I should care. I relate to most of these except I think, being manipulative and being an extrovert. I've always thought I was fake because I say things I don't really believe myself because I know that's what the person wants to hear. I can understand someone's emotions, I can understand where they're coming from to act in a certain way, I can somewhat empathise with them but I can never truly care. I used to be able to but not anymore and nothing really happened in my life to bring that change. A lot of times I find myself thinking the exact opposite of the things I am saying, like, outside I am telling someone that it's okay to feel that way towards a situation but inside I am thinking that the person is exaggerating and dramatizing things unnecessarily. I believe a lot of the times they truly are and if a rational person were to listen to it, they'd think that too. But those who I think are truly suffering, I can empathise with whole heartedly most of the times. Other times, I really want to feel sad but I simply can't. I know how bad it sounds that I somewhat "minimalize" or "quantify" someone's suffering but I simply can't care if I truly deem a situation not worthy of their reaction. (A recent example of something that happened is that my roommate was telling me how she's stressed and depressed and literally can't even study or focus and has seen her parents literally "shed tears of blood" just cause her older sister wants to marry a guy she loves (who my roomie doesn't approve btw), I mean, all I see is two conservative parents who've taught one of their daughters that wanting to marry a guy of her choice is bringing shame to the family and a sin and all their love and care to their older daughter was to make sure she wouldn't "betray" them like that but she did. Oh my what could be worse than that? I know how insensitive that sounds but literally crying about your sister marrying a guy and claiming you have the worst life because of that when I'm telling her about a girl who lost her dad last year to cancer and they had to struggle to even make ends meet even comparable??? She likes to cry and complain a lot which really seems childish for her as a grown 22 year old woman and people like her kinda contributed to me not caring even when I should.) Anyway other than that, I truly want to be of service to others, I love helping people without ever expecting anything in return as long as helping them isn't harming/bothering me.

So many doctors are dark empaths, but it helps. You know what your patient thinks, feels, what they will do and how they will react. If you then call your patient out on their emotions they will open up, let everything out, and they will feel better in the end. Dark empath doctors, however, don’t feel or care about everything their patient says, but in the end using empathy as a tool helps the patient. I’m a dark empath myself, and although narcissistic traits and manipulative behavior are one of my downsides, the empathy and self-centeredness have helped me land jobs, internships and even positions in pretty exclusive extracurricular programs. I know what people want and then morph into that. I want to get one thing out there: being a dark empath says nothing about your intent. I do love my friends and want the best for them. It’s not like I have no affection at all. It’s just that when I need to, I can flip a switch that allows me to use empathy to get ahead. That’s all. And since my intent is good, I would never do such a thing to inconvenience others.

I'm most likely a Dark Empath and I must say something... The morality you develop thanks to your parents/environment might be key to avoid questionable behavior. I seem to find manipulating others a bit easy thanks to reading their emotions, and I could have caused a disaster if it weren't for my morals. Long story short: even if someone might be a Dark Empath, there is a chance he has good intentions if he was raised properly. He/she might also dump his morals if some emergency (danger to someone they love) is happening and WILL manipulate you if that avoids danger.

Sometimes, acting good is out of convenience. Honestly, most people act that way, but don’t like to say it out loud because it looks like taking advantage. Dark empaths are aware of that and also keep quiet about it. But being in good terms with someone, because you want to have a friend is not taking advantage of them. In any case, is a mutual interchange of favors and nice experiences. I consider myself a dark empath, because I don’t feel empathy at all, but I want to be treated nicely, so I do the same for the rest.

Yes, that was my neighbor. She seemed really nice initially and her daughter really likes to hang out with me (so the daughter met Hopper, a wild neighborhood bunny as a result of being around me since I love animals). We have so many good memories and fun times, but it only took one incident of her daughter seeing a baby bunny's life ended by a crow for the neighbor to turn on me and blame me for the baby bunny's end. Despite the tragedy, her daughter still says bunnies and cats are her favorite animals and still want to hang out with me and do fun activities outside, so the good outweighs the bad. However, the neighbor resents me and even went out of her way to convince the other association board members to turn on me and try to make rules that would not allow us to feed birds in the neighborhood, even though others in the neighborhood did feed birds including s board member. She got other neighbors who once didn't care and were fine about it before to ventually turn on me and complain, even one neighbor who I used to shovel her driveway for in winter. I was devastated, shocked, and heart broken... This neighbor does have a tendency to gossip, persuade other people about things to make them agree with her, and always seems to need someone or a neighbor to pick on I noticed. I call her a nice bully, and she did talk to me afterwards as if nothing happened and is still "nice" to me. I feel so torn, because I have autism and try to avoid social situations with confrontation or conflict yet I don't want to punish her kid and give the kid the impression that I don't like her anymore or punish the kid for something her mom did. But then again, the neighbor doesn't let her daughter hang outside as much anymore either as if to avoid me (but still trusts me enough to leave me alone with her kid to grab something inside, use the bathroom or whatever so yeah)... it's not like I'm creepy or going to hurt anyone which she knows and whe probably also knows I'm an easy target to pick on. Sighs

She also proved it when I overheard her saying to her other friends that she used my OTHER friend to get a good grade in physical education class/ Gym class. When my friend told me about this I was shocked. From that point I KNEW something was off. So I tested her to see if I can really trust her by telling her a secret she was supposed to keep. I love watching Psych2Go because I'm extremely interested in psychology, but watching videos like this one strikes an uncomfortable cord with me because of misunderstandings it could cause. First, the terms psychopath and sociopath are HEAVILY outdated terms and very offensive, the term for both is antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Second, Psych2Go always paints people with these types of disorders in such a negative light, and yes, while most of what is said is true for some, most people with these types of disorders are and try to be good people and get Treatment and help. But it's stigma like this that makes it hard not only to identify these types of disorders, but to seek help for them too. Sorry for the rant, but I felt the need to spread this vital information so that we can all understand and help each other and look past illness and at the people themselves.

It is not that they are outdated, hun (criminologist speaking here) … it is that both (sociopath and psychopath) are not medical terms. What happens here is that while you got ASPD, in the DSM-5 you describe sociopathy as a whole with ASPD but you do not describe psychopathy per se. All psychopaths have the ASPD traits but they got more that are not described in the DSM 5. I am making this difference here because they got no proper medical description and that is why both terms are still used.

@@Psych2go I think most people aren’t self aware. I think lack of self awareness is why the world is the way it is. When you have a channel like this that forces the viewer to analyze their own behavior and the behavior of others, they then have no choice but to become more self aware and grow as a person. Instead of some person out there falling into a 10 year toxic relationship or cycle. They may have seen a video like this and now (armed with knowledge) recognized signs to avoid toxic relationships in the first place. They should have mandatory classes like this in schools. If the average person knew their own psychology at a basic level and were guided to be self aware growing up then a lot of the pain that ruins peoples lives could be avoided. Your channel is teaching people these important lessons before life does it the hard way. This is important work.

To me, an empath is born and doesn't chose to sense & read other's emotions and true intentions. It is really hard to BS a real empath. You can be an empath and don't give an f about the other person's feelings or existence; you just have great innately detective skills of people's true intentions and/or feelings (while not trying to find anything at all). Being empathetic is going the extra step of trying to understand someone's feelings, their humanity, & being in "their shoes" Simply being empathetic is caring and being an empath is knowing great details of a person with little care. You are not seeking but damn you noticed something about a person and believe me you were not intentionally looking for anything. No one has directly called me an empath, but I am still indirectly treated as a no-cost therapist by strangers and loved ones. I have so much to say on this topic but nah too busy.

I really, really appreciate these videos. Not all of them (like this one) are useful to me in my real life, as I don't know anyone who has NPD, is possibly a Dark Empath, or alike. But, I like to build fictional characters. One of my favourite and rich characters is a Dark Empath (rooted with NPD), and has her own little underground cult. Her tomb-palace is allegedly home to a great amount of wealth, which baits thieves and brigands in, only to be captured, broken down over time, and dragged through a full thought-reform. Both as a creative person and rebuilding myself from childhood emotional neglect (Which I also learned about through this channel), Psych2Go is an absolute asset. Please keep doing all the things you do!

Unrelated and very unnecessary but doesn't azula fit this compared to zuko? In the show, azula was portrayed as cunning, manipulative, and cold while zuko was more reckless since he mostly acted on anger every time he confront aang. But despite acting psychopathic, she wasn't a psychopath. Like the video said, psychopaths lack emotions so they don't care about people's opinion of them, but in later episodes it was shown that azula also wanted her father's "approval" since she thought her own mother never cared about her, and therefore thought that ozai (zuko and azula's dad) was the only "supporting parent" she had (Also in one scene where she got ozai angry at her, she was clearly afraid. An emotion psychopaths lack of)

I agree with everything you just said. Azula had many traits of primary psychopathy. But being psychopathic, doesn't necessarily make her a psychopath. I think she was a machiavellian, not a psychopath or a sociopath. She was always calculating with her plans and scehemes. She was cold, not reckless or impulsive. In fact, Zuko was seen to be more aggressive and impulsive than her (even after his redemption arc). I'm not saying Zuko is a psychopath of course lol But he had some anger issues due to his traumas. Thankfully, his traumas were healing :)

because dark empaths know exactly what to do to take advantage of the society to get what they want. There is a factor in manipulating that is key to make more harm than directly hurting. For example, if you have a friend that is a dark empath you would probably not even notice it, and while you start trusting him, he may be analizing your personality on a deeper level, that will be useful to get what they want. As you know, humans are social beings, who need each other to live. Dark empaths know that, so they take away things from people, not neccessarily having the objective to hurt, and that is why they fit so much, because they just abuse of the kindness of other people. They *get* everything and don't have to give *anything*. In the other hand, psycohapths are metodical, but not in that way. They do not act to make people give them what they want; they act to take things from others, making them untrustworthy, resulting in them not being so able to fit in the society like dark empaths do, and that is why psychopaths are classified as anti-social and dark empaths not. You could easily get away from a psychopath to avoid a toxic friendship, because you would quickly notice that they are psychopaths. But you would not notice that someone is a dark empath, so they will keep manipulating you. There is a lot of things that make people kind to other, the most importants being love and trust, so you gotta make sure that someone trusts and loves you to start manipulating them. That is why some times, empathy is a weakness, because every kindness is exploitable. It is a similar case to the "wolf disguised as a sheep" story. As the sheeps don't know it is a wolf, the wolf could get close to them and eat them with ease. But if the wolf wasn't on a disguise, all the sheeps would run away. It isn't that easy to manipulate, it takes patience, time, and organization, such as everything in this world. Psychopaths do not have those qualities, so all the harm they could do is on a short period of time to a small amount of people, while dark empaths can hurt a lot of people minimally for really longs periods of time. Or maybe they don't say that dark empaths are worse than psychopaths in a literal way, idk

This is honestly a large part of my personality, it's just a first time I heard there is a name to this sort of behavior. Although I do recognized that I can be a bully sometimes, mostly subconsciously tbh, I think I mainly act that way to people who deserve it or that make me feel uncomfortable and keep it more on the down low around everyone else, it still there but it is treated more like a joke between friends and I make sure to keep it like that while being honest about it to them, honesty and telling my friends about my behavior pattern is what keeps me stable and somewhat entertaining, I'm fortunate to have understanding and accepting people as my friends.

Narcissists and empaths don´t mix well, when it comes to charakter. It´s as if you want to mix water and sand. That´s the reason you can´t call someone dark empaths, just because he gets it, when someone is angry or down. Without an open mind to this person, knowing their feelings means nothing than abuse and misuse. Just because it looks like much, if an abuser sees, that his victim is hurt, doesn´t mean, he gets it, that he is the reason of it. Narcissists deny at all cost, even the possibility, that they are abusers.
