5 Safe Ways To View The Eclipse

Ғылым және технология

Watching an eclipse? Save your eyeballs -- rig up a sweet viewing set-up with some help from this video.
Remember never look directly at the sun without certified sun glasses or a #14 Welder's mask. Instead look at the projected image of the sun on a screen with the help of a few simple house hold objects.

    The image of the woman with the colander in front of her face is unfortunate. If someone interprets that as an instruction to look toward the Sun through the holes in the colander they are in danger of burning their retinas in multiple places. Also: Projecting the Sun through binoculars as shown could ruin the binoculars. Sunlight will be concentrated in the eyepieces and the resulting heat could crack the eyepieces. No telescope or binocular should be pointed at the Sun unless there is an appropriate filter in front of it (that is, at the big end).

    I feel like this wouldn't work very well. If they're polarized and they're misaligned at all, you'll probably see nothing. If they're polarized and aligned well, it would be light looking through 12 panels of glass, but a bit dimmer. I'm guessing it wouldn't block enough light / I'm assuming they would have suggested it if it was a legit option to just stack glass and/or sunglasses until the sun gets dim.

  • @jameswan421

    @jameswan421

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes. It has to be 100% covered, and then it will be just as safe as looking at the moon at night. First though, you have to be in the path of totality to view a total eclipse. Everywhere else in the country, you'll just be getting a partial eclipse, and you'll always have to be under some protection against the sun of some sort.

  • @lajoswinkler

    @lajoswinkler

    6 жыл бұрын

    Of course. Totality can't be seen through filters because it's so weak and dim. If you have binoculars, you can use them to look at the totality, but it has to be totality. NOT A SINGLE part of the Sun can be visible. Not Baily's beads, not diamond ring effect. Using binoculars to view the totality gives you an opportunity to see the beautiful details of the corona, chromosphere, prominences.

    You don't want much light to get in, so it's a good idea to make the head hole as small as possible. We put some cloth around the opening that we could bunch up around the neck and shoulders like a scart, to keep the light out. As for the pinhole, it's good to experiment! A small hole (like the size of a literal pin), will make a very sharp image, but it will be darker and so harder to see. A larger hole (pea-sized) will let in lots of light, but it will produce a fuzzy image. I'd start small, and test your box on the sun today and tomorrow. If it looks too dark, make the hole a bit bigger. If you use tinfoil like we did on the pinhole end, it's easy to tape on holes of different sizes. Good luck!

    The only "beyond" shade is #15 but that applies to UV only and exists as a part of some autodarkening welding filters. As for the visible light, #14 is the highest there is. You can use #13, too, but the image is too bright for some people, especially if you hold it right close to your eyes and you're shielding the daylight by your hands. Don't use #12 or lower. It's not safe.

    I have a question and I hope someone will answer it. So I will start school on the day of the eclipse. How can I see it? Can i take a video on my tablet and the view it? Or is that dangerous?

    +elvira yisel rivera if you've ever taken a picture of the moon with your tablet, you probably were disappointed - it usually shows up as a very pale dot. Tiny! The same will be true of an eclipse. Plus, before the sun is totally covered, pointing your tablet directly at the sun for more than a moment might permanently damage the camera's sensor. See if you can bring some solar glasses to school and see if your teacher will let you take a few minutes to enjoy this rare view! And remember, during totality you can look directly at the eclipse

    I made a pinhole box viewer out of a Priority Mail box measuring 10" x 7" x 4.75"...I used a 3/4" pvc pipe coupling as a viewer hole and aluminum foil for the pinhole. I tested it and see that the sun's size is very small-about 1/8' diameter. How big should the pinhole be? Pinhole I have is approx. 1/32" diameter-what would be best diameter to use? Does a bigger hole make for better image size?

  • @0000song0000

    No one ever answered you, but no. A bigger hole will only allow more light in. For a BIGGER image you would need magnifying lenses.

    +Matthew I've heard conflicting things in this - but it sounds like most phones would be fine. Still the resolution will be terrible - the sun will be a tiny dot. Good enough to monitor the sun, though, so you can know when totality hits and look directly

    Will a welding mask 10 and sunglasses work?

  • @lajoswinkler

    @lajoswinkler

    6 жыл бұрын

    NO. #12 is the BARE minimum and I'd use it for glancing only. If you want to look calmly into the Sun, you need #13 minimum. Sunglasses as an addon would be ok if you used #13 but #10 is really too transparent. Don't play with your eyes. Two #10s stacked together would be ok.

    #10 (or DIN10, same thing) is absolutely not enough and downright dangerous for looking into the Sun. However, if that's all you have, you can stack two pieces. Maximum #10 transmittance for visible light is 0.023%. For #14, it's 0.00044%. Two #10s are therefore between #13 and #14. That should do the trick.
