I never really understood people who says that being and artist isn't a real job. Who do people think makes their animated movies? The images and characters in their video games? Images/graphics on most things in stores? Artists all made them c: never give up your dreams love

Exactly I don't think people realise how much art is in their everyday life. All of our entertainment like music, movies, games etc was all done by artists. Without any form of artist how boring would this world be :/

I'm only 14 and I draw everyday for 2-3 hours because I love to drw portraits or other realistic stuff, I have another friend that draws anime, he is always saying "you are so much better at art then me" and I always reply with "No, 1. we have different styles and 2. I spend hours and hours on drawing and you spend 30 minutes."

Pastel Witch Like the guy above me said, realistic art is not necessarily a copy-paste. The only qualifications are that it _looks_ realistic. Even realistic art not wholly drawn from imagination reflects how the artist sees the world (what is focused on, how the artist interprets events, etc). And let's be completely honest here, photos hardly give the same colors as you see with your eyes. You're also putting stylized art on a bit of a pedestal. Many people who try to draw anime do so without any knowledge of anatomy, perspective, or other vital components of art. It's just "I watched anime and want to copy it". Others go for cartoonish styles taken from superhero comics, TV shows or regular comics, and it just ends up a distorted version of the original. It's hardly how the artist sees the world, it's how they're able to stylise objects to fit in their already stylised world, and that style may not even be their own. In fact, stylistic art is basically realistic art distorted and lacking the extreme detail. You should judge art based on merit rather than some misguided idea of "this guy is more creative and I can see more of who he is through his art". Have you _seen_ some of the imaginative realistic art out there? They have to create shit that has not a suitable reference on this earth. While stylistic artists can make a shape then color without really caring too much about detail, realistic artists can make whatever fantastical thing they're creating seem plausible. And realistic sculptures are the shit.

Selling prints or pieces of work is not the only kind of artist either, you could be a designer, architect, decorator, ...all forms of art. I dont understand why people think being an artist is not a real job, art is in EVERYTHING.......the food you eat, movies you watch, clothing you wear, phones you use, etc etc. Everything is advertised, created, designed, etc etc....by someone....an artist.

Kai .-. The music bit is a tad nitpicky. The word artist is used most often to describe someone who specializes in visual art. That's how connotations work. If someone was talking about music, they'd say music artist unless it's pretty explicit within the context.

I absolutely hate it when people say I'm "talented" at drawing. I was never born with the ability to draw. I started off drawing stick figures. I started off struggling with circles. But with many years of struggle, I actually got better. Saying I'm talented or other artists are talented is flattering, but tbh I feel like people completely ignore the amount of time and effort I took to get to the level of art I'm at.

Same! Since I was little my friends always make fun of me because I have social anxiety, so I prefer to draw most of the time. My parents saw even the littlest glimmer of talent in me and decided "You can be whatever you want when you grow up. It doesn't matter what it is or how much salary you receive. As long as you're passionate & it makes you happy!" I grew up with this kind of support and slowly things are getting better. My anxiety got better and so is my art! I'll say this now, I really really hate the word talented. It's sad that you spend so much effort and time and they just say "you're so talented! I wish I could draw like you! " actually, you can draw like me, if you put as much effort as I did, as much time I took, I'm sure you could. But did you? No. Exactly. I think the artist would be much happier if you said "this is pretty" or "nicely done" rather than "you're so talented I wish I could draw like you! " because to the artist, it probably sounds like "you put no effort you're just gifted, I'm jealous! " that's just my opinion anyway...

Aelle Ae11e EXACTLY!! I think I honestly hate the word talent. It really gets so annoying when ppl write off my ability at "talent" and not something that I've worked on and practiced at to develop into a skill which I'm still trying to improve!!! It's actually kind of degrading when someone says, "OMG you're so talented!" It totally underminds the time, effort, and work I've put into my drawings, sketches, and paintings. One of the most annoying things I've heard is, "I can't even draw a stick figure/straight line!" ... ... Well, guess what? I can't draw a straight line either! That's what rulers are for! And honestly,( I know this sounds horrible) I don't care if you can draw a friging stick figure or not!! I just don't. If you WANT to get better you HAVE to WORK at it to devolp the skill into something you're PROUD of. Don't ever stop or give up on your goals, dreams, and passions!

I agree. I mean, you do have to have some kind of eye to hand coordination. But that's really all you need. The rest is hard work, practice, practice, practice! I told a kid as school today I spend last evening drawing for an hour on the ear of a dragon I'm making atm. She almost died of the chock. XD Yes, I spent an hour drawing an ear that's a few centimeters. But that's why it looks good. Not because I had talent, but because I have drawn my whole life and spend time trying to make what I draw look right.

The second myth frustrates me so much that whenever I do paintings and people degrades themselves cus they are not "gifted" or "talented" I always.. always say "I practiced since I was 8.. It's not purely talent but half of it...is hard work." But they won't believe me bec they think that I'm trying to comfort them to their levels. They know my mom paints so they say it "runs in the family" It's really annoying bec I'm not into painting landscapes like my mom while my mom can't paint/draw people like me. I'm glad some artists disagrees with this myth. Thanks for making this video. I can share this to those annoying people I met in the way ✨☺️

I know this feeling. I've been drawing on and off ever since I was in kindergarden. I drew nonstop as a kid, stopped for some time, then started to draw a lot again and now it dampered down to drawing every other day. Of course I'm better than most people who hardly ever draw, although I am by no means a master, because they hardly ever draw. Many people don't seem to get that concept.

Myth #1 is why I currently work in an office while my bachelor's in something I didn't really want sits in my file cabinet. I wish someone like you had been around telling me that art is a real job. I've lost most desire for art now because I missed my prime. I feel drained by the humdrum of "safe" and "stable", which also means "pointless". I hope young artists are watching this and decide to take the leap and pursue art as a career.

  • @segawalilac

    @segawalilac

I also currently work in a office with a high paying job with a shiny piece of paper that I spent 4 years getting. However, since I was about 14, my goal always been getting a stable office job and draw in my spare time. I am currently drawing anime/manga art in my spare time and tabling at artist allies at my local cons. So I got to know quite a few artists, some full time, some part time who wants to pursuit art as full time. A few of them certainly have said many times "I'm not poor being an artist! I don't know where that myth comes from!" From my perspective, they are certainly not well off and are definately less well off than I am financially. What I regret is not so much missing out on my "prime" but regret being financially sable that I am spoilt. I don't want to do art full time because the income is lower and less stable than what I have now. The joy from doing art fulltime does not offset the financial worries in my mind. I will just have to live with my artist friends improving their art while I just crawl slowly. But hey! At least I have more art materials than my professional artists friends... tl;dr Kids, if you go for the stable job route, you will end up not being able to return to art without sacrifices.

It's often in life that things are actually seen upside down by most people. Is being an artist easy? Well, let's compare to a brick layer. A person is taught how to do his job and he grows muscles. He doesn't have to think much more than that, he follows a pattern, eats right, rests and relaxes as he pleases when it's done. An artist is a never ending learning. If an artist just follows a pattern and stays in comfort zone, they fail and fade away. Many people cannot learn, they don't want, they're afraid to. But they think if they do something heavily physical, they work "more". Now let's compare to the surgeon. That's more close to the truth. A surgeon needs a steady hand, a good healthy body and mind, endurance and huge knowledge. Sounds just like an artist. Only the result vary - an artist does not juggle lives of other people, only emotions and sometimes inspiration. But! A doctor needs to refresh the knowledge from time to time to stay sharp. So does an artist. But an artist, as already said, needs to learn something new every day. There's no stopping, there's no level 80 where you don't need anything else and can relax and easily doodle Jakonda in 20 minutes. So there's still something even more difficult for an artist compared to a surgeon. The precision is about the same. Not all artists reach for the stars but some do. To create something new, to collect ALL the information, ALL the emotions, find strength and motivation, process everything and bring something absolutely unseen before from the outer side of the universe... is priceless. That's what big companies like Disney do. People may not understand it but these guys actually create something absolutely new that feels like... like the world couldn't even exist without these. Can you imagine our world without Bambi? Without Lion King? They seem like taken from the math, the universe itself. But that's what most people don't understand! Yes, NOW you can look at these and make a million copies, your own cartoons and characters with the same eyes, same noses, same hands, same hair etc. Now that you know how it SHOULD look! But it DID NOT EXIST BEFORE! At all! When you think about it, it seems impossible. I'm talking about animation because I think it's actually one step beyond. When people like Da Vinci and Michelangelo drew humans and places, they simply looked at what already exists. They only had to learn how to show it better. Disney create something absolutely new. Something so geometrically appealing that it feels like real. The cartoon characters look simple but it's the most difficult part - to make something look pleasing, with nothing unnecessary and sticking out, only what matters. Sadly, only artists will understand. What it is to play god and create something nature would never be able to create. Only human. In that artists are very much like doctors. And I personally think an artists, a REAL Artist, is the most difficult job on the planet. Not disgusting, not physically exhausting or dangerous but most complex and needy. But you can always try to compare and prove me wrong. ;)

Mallory SF i don't agree that it's the most difficult job, because there are so many risky jobs out there. As a surgeon you have to save peoples lives, just as an engineer checking if rollercoasters are safe. All that stuff. But i agree with all the things you said about Disney, creating thing which were never there before. That's what I live for, as an artist, since i was young i have these images in my head, and i love making them into real paintings and showing people what I created in my head. It's amazing. What i also agree with, is that there is no max. level. When you worked long enough, as a surgeon, you know how to do most of the surgeries. But as an artist there is always someone who's better than you, whose art is more appealing, rememberable, and you always have to improve and fight if you want to stay relevant. Art is amazing. It's bittersweet but so endearing.

Honestly, my family members sometimes compare me to my Great Grandma who is now gone. Some of my family members say that her art talent carried over to me which I don't think is true. Because my talent is something I built and which still needs building. My GGma was a painter who usually painted flowers onto dishes which isn't a bad thing. My mom used to be an artist but she stopped because she didn't think she was good enough which i even told her that it was stupid that she thought that way. I said that if she would've kept going that she would be good! I believe that No body is born with talent, talent is something earned by hard work and practice. A baby isn't naturally gifted with art when their first piece is that better of Vincent van Goph or something.

I wanted to be an artist once as a child, and all my parents used to tell me was "You can do it if you want to, but I'd hate to see you waste your potential that way." I used to abide by their words and now I have so many missed opportunities from improving my art and have to start from scratch all over again. Art is a passion of mine, but remains one of many. I plan to continue with art, but as a hobby. If the opportunity arises, I might make it my main career. I agreed with all of these myths, and had to self-check myself for a few of them. This was really eye-opening, thank you for making this video and it really makes me feel better about who I want to be in life and what path I want to follow.

As an artist myself, I can confirm that that is my BIGGEST peeve. People ask me that all the time, and usually I say no.... But it's also nice to challenge yourself-- maybe you only draw stunningly beautiful people and need practice on realistic human expectations, or maybe you need to diversify your style to different body types-- and it's also a good idea to make some money in the process. Example: "Are you drawing? OMG DO YOU DRAW?" "Uh.... yeah." "Woah that looks cool! CAN YOU DRAW ME?!?!" "Yes. But I don't work for free. I can do a small head-shot for (maybe $7) or a full body pose for (maybe $15)." *The people who actually pay you are rare, but usually fun to draw* :)

Another teacher is pushing me to become a singer and my parents want me to become a engineer. The point is, I want to become a artist and explore the world, catching amazing moments such as the Sakura trees in Japan, etc.

I know this is unrelated, but I love the way you say "artist" :D Anyway, I'm 17, and I do want to pursue a career in art, specifically as a storyboard artist, though I guess my main issue is that I'm not spectacular (I do practice every day with poses and backgrounds but still), I'm just an average teenager in N.Y., so I'm far from the entertainment hubs like LA and San Francisco, and it's not like I get any support with this either. Understandably so, I guess, given that it's not a guaranteed successful path to pursue, but there are a lot of days where I wonder if it's even worth pursuing.

"You're an artist so clearly you must be atrocious at math and anything related to science" That's the one that annoys me the most, partly because you need to have some grasp on physics and a good understanding of biology (or at least the anatomical aspects of it) to position creatures in space and draw them doing just about anything at all (the only way to get around that is by always straight out copying references), and that goes doubly for comics with all those people punching and shooting and fantastical creature flopping around, and partly because it feeds that horrible left brain-right brain myth.

Exactly! Not to mention that some drawings require exact measurements and calculations to make the lines perfect. And that artists usually do research on their drawings before they do them (if they were drawing a certain person doing a certain job or something like that)

I don't know if this is a myth, so much a comment I got throughout highschool:"you're left handed?! You must be such a talented artist!" I don't even know where it came from, but I never thought what hand you used determined your art skill. But to be fair, I do think talent as an artist does exist. I taught my cousin to draw basic shapes when he was about three and now at eight, he is drawing at the same level i was at when I got serious about my art [which was about as good as his age group] at 15

FreedWulf I also do think there is some kind of talent. Some people pick it up quicker and things come easier to them. What it doesn't mean, and most people are confused that way, is that if you lack amazing talent you can't become good at art. Yes some people need more or less practice to get to a certain level. And no it isn't a "black and white" thing where you either have talent or you don't. You can have various degrees of talent. But not only the execution is important, if you don't have a good imagination, if you aren't creative and can't come up with anything by yourself, that's the much bigger problem. I think talent exists but it is also an excuse people have so they don't have to work on themselves. Even a talentet artist isn't born with knowledge of perfect anatomy and all the skills needed as an artist.

Every little thing in this world is made by artists. Building and other structures are built by Architects, architects are artist who chose to become an architect since its their dream. Animators, Comic makers, etc. they are artists. Bei g an artists is twice and is much more harder than any job, artists have been induring many pains and challenges, pains such as; being compared to another artists, people asking them to draw for them for free, etc.; challenges such as, artist fears, artist block, lack of materials, surpassing your capability to improve and many more. Artists are the once who's been beautifying this world, improving this world, and making the world a wonderful place.

2:40 THANK YOU!!! It always bothers me when people chalk up someone's success to "talent" because it really discredits all the hard work they put into their work. It isn't about talent, it's about passion and the want to always improve.

Yes! My brothers call me lazy all the time because when I'm not in school, I'm on my computer. But I'm not playing video games! I am spending 3+ hours per character, not including sketch or background, then I'm replying to people who are commenting, bidding, etc! It gets frustrating.

I'm 15 and I have only recently rekindled my love for drawing and making character designs for my stories, I have also told my Dad that I want to persue a career as an artist, his response was a scoff and him saying "you can't just draw for a living" I then had a 3 hour debate on why you can persue a career in art, from concepts to poster to logo deigns, I went through everything to get my point through to him that you can have a career in nearly everything.

I have those brushes that hold the water in them. And you can just draw and if you need more water you squeeze it. They are so good. I love them.

I hated to draw and paint, but when I was 9 my father fourced me to attend art classes in my summer vecation. I hated those classes, but after a few days I started enjoying it. Now I am an artist and I am always thankful to my father who descovered my passion and lead me in the right way

The talent thing is so true. People see my drawings and are oh my god you're so talented and I explain to them how many hours a certain piece took and that if they put in the same effort they can draw something nice too and they don't believe me. They believe it took me hours but not that they can do it as well.
