5 Reasons Your Toyota Prius Is Getting Awful Fuel Mileage

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There are five reasons that can cause your Toyota Prius to drop its mileage, which we are discussing in this video. However, there are also five things you can do to improve your Prius MPG or the mileage of any hybrid vehicle.
Torque News Prius reporter Peter Neilson, who is a real expert in Toyota Prius and hybrid vehicles, explains what can drop your Prius mileage and what you can do to improve your hybrid vehicle's MPG.
Peter writes, "so, your Toyota Prius has lost 5 miles per gallon, and now you are wondering what to do about it? Well, never fear you are not the only one who has dropped some serious mpg."
Believe it or not, the number one reason Prius owners see a decrease in fuel economy is inclement weather.
Tire pressure, the silent mpg killer not only for your Toyota Prius or a hybrid vehicle, but for any car in general. Check your pressure every month. I do not care if the light is off or not. If you care about fuel economy you will check your pressure.
Your aging hybrid battery could be costing your Prius to have a lower econ. A failing or bad battery does not allow for adequate gasoline engine off time. This action results in more extended periods of engine run time and lowers fuel economy.
Keep watching and reading to learn all the reasons that can kill your Prius mileage and what you can do to improve the mileage for your Toyota Prius or any hybrid or PHEV vehicle.

Make sure that when it's time to get new tires that you replace the factory tires with similar (Michelin or Bridgestone) "E-Z roll" tires that are designed for hybrid cars. I made the mistake of replacing my Hyundai Ioniq's tires with regular tires and my mpg went from 60 to 48!

I saw only on 20220330 the two replies that were written eight months and also 3 weeks. I never replaced the tires cause the dealer I bought the car from claimed the tires were new. Transmission that went bad on July 2021 we’re replaced with a used transmission set. I had the high voltage battery replaced with a refurbished one and I’m still getting 33 or less mpg.

On the minute average mpg I’m getting 70mpg on my 2011 in 2021. It’s run almost 140k. Is this accurate? When I started using power mode more I noticed that the mpg on 100 more often. Usually I accelerate for 5 seconds and leave it so it doesn’t drop. If it’s really true I’m getting 70mpg I’m never selling this car.

By the way, my Prius is 2009 and it had less than 70,000 miles when I bought it. It now has less than 83,000 miles. I always fill it up 87 gas and get the odometer reading most of the time and use my phone calculator to compute the actual MPG, which was consistent with the MPG the instrument panel always stated it has. At 79781, the transmission failed (on July 2, 2021, my seventy something birthday. Toyota was initially charging me around $9,000.00 to mess it up some more but I was lucky to find a mechanic to replace the transmission with a used one for only $1,200 (parts and labor) plus a new 12volt battery to replace the new one I got from AAA sometime August 2020. It’s now running at around 33MPG. Never buy a Toyota again.

I just bought a 2014 japanese import toyota prius, with with 55,000 klms. I am the 2nd N.Z. owner, and it was imported by a Toyota dealership in 2015, and had travelled 17,000 klms then. It looks like a new vehicle. My first drive was from Taupo to Tokoroa where I live, a distance of 66 KLMS. I have no experience of driving a prius or any hybrid, the read out said I had averaged 25 klms per 100 klms. That is about 58.8 mpg. Our highway speed in N.Z. is 100 klms per hour, or 62 miles per hour. I have no reason to talk BS, as some on here have alluded to, because they get poor economy. Oh I am 74 years young. I am happy with that economy, as my last car was a 2005 Mazda Premacy 2.3, on a recent check with 200 klm around town travelling, it used 30 litres of 95 premium fuel!!.

It's also about driving habits. My Prius Prime got 80.6 MPG going to the poconos and back to Philadelphia. A little less going up and a lot more going home because of the mountain. If I punch the gas and drive like an idiot I'm getting bad mileage no matter what kind of car I drive. Take your time and enjoy the ride. Coast into red lights and take it easy on the brakes. Don't run up the back of the car in front of you and then hit the brakes so that you don't hit them. As they say, if you're going to ride my ass then pull my hair. I keep my car in eco mode with auto electric. Any extra energy left over goes to charge the battery. It's incredible how well this car operates. And of course, do what the video says. Watch tire pressure, etc. I'm loving my car. It's my first Toyota. I was always an American car company guy myself. I will say American cars are smoother and more comfortable. The Prius, well, rides like a Toyota. But it's not bad. Plenty of leg room. I'm 6'2" and I can stretch out (was my worry when I sat in the car). There's also plenty of head room for me. Us tall guys in small cars can have a real problem fitting to the car. My wife just bought a new Venza. It's rated for about 40 mpg. She's driving like I suggested and she's getting nearly 50 MPG. Not bad. Now that's a classy looking car. I like it better than the luxury SUV's. If you want a gas guzzling sports car then get one. IF you want fuel economy then get one but drive it how it's supposed to be driven.

I am a retired 76 year-old senior chemical engineer who has been driving since I was 16 years old. I don’t drive like an idiot as some idiots may guess. I tried different driving methods in different terrains for a couple of weeks before writing my comment on this useless blob. I sometimes tried driving almost to the point of being a traffic obstruction just to see if the Prius’ terrible MPG would improve, all in vain and a waste of time and money. I always had bad experiences with different Toyota dealers especially their service departments that all had unrealistically expensive prices just to find out what’s wrong with their product and idiotic guesses. I even spent money to have the car tested just a few days after I bought it by a supposedly hybrid “expert” that was recommended by the car dealer I bought it from. I believe it’s an educated guess that the old 2009 Prius had low mileage when I bought it because the two previous owners found it to be a gas guzzler.

The insight was slapped together too quickly to compete with prius, my gf has a 2011 insight and there at least a few things that are so stupid about insight, look at the battery vent area on the back seat, it’s half covered by the seatbelt! so always have that one buckled to keep it cool as possible, you also have to put it in park at every stop to keep the ac running, also it’s way to low to the ground and has no storage compartment above the spare tire like the Prius, she gets average 40mpg with her ready to die battery, the battery assist light comes on a lot. Only good thing about them compared to the Prius is they don’t burn oil, but I’ll keep my second gen Prius regardless.

I asked the dealer to check the battery and he said there is nothing wrong with the battery. There is definitely something wrong. I had a 2010 that I drove nearly 9 and didn’t have this dramatic of a drop in mileage until it needed major engine work. I am disturbed that a car that is just under 4 years old that sat in the garage for all of 2020 and most of 2021 is having issues already. I watched last night as the hybrid driving interface displayed it using gas when my foot wasn’t on the gas pedal, going down hill, at a speed of 25 mpg. And two days prior, i had it in for regular maintenance and when I drove off the lot, it was getting 65-70 mpg. That only lasted that night. Now I am down to the woeful

Peter seems to be in denial that a weakening 12V "auxiliary" battery affects MPG. The high voltage traction battery is used to top off your 12v battery when it gets low. The less energy your high voltage battery has, the less it can assist your MPG. I read about this effect for years, and finally experienced it myself in late 2020.

@@EvilTwin123 I’m not sure what his accent is but I think it may be a Spanish accent and in the Spanish language you pronounce everything phonetically so that could very well be what is happening. I just don’t really even understand why you care, the information in the video was good and you understood what he meant the whole time. Last I’ll say on the matter, hope your life gets better.

It's not tomato or potato whose pronunciation can vary based on syllable inflection. Prick ... .pri It's not Pry-k Us is not use. Obama Ob-Ama, sounds like Alabama being spoken quickly? No, it' wasn't a common word until the president. O-bah-mah Obama drives a Prius. Biden drives a Tesla
