I bought New York strip for $7.69 per lb. Butchered it myself got 13 steaks out of it and a piece of chuck. The total cost was $88. Great deal.

My Mom and Dad had a large family and we always had steaks at the table for a family of 6. When I was married my mom told me the secret.I went to Publix and asked them what meat was on sale. I then became best friends with my butcher. Now they ask me what I want, and how I want it, and then most of the time since I am buying 2 large portions of meat they give me a discount of around 1-2$ off the price. If you have 2 in a home or a family of 6 the price is hard to beat.

Can you do a video on what to look for in a primal cut at the big box stores? It's great that you're teaching how to cut them up, but if you buy a low-quality primal, cutting it well won't give as good a final product.

Finding the right place to purchase your meat is so important. My 2 favorite places to buy meat is Restaurant Depot and Stew Leonard’s. That works for me as I live in northern NJ. Stew Leonard’s usually has some nice cut of beef on special. I bought Tbones for $7.99 a pound recently from there. Nice thick cut steaks. And I have bought sub primals from both Stew Leonard’s and RD. The idea of being your own butcher is awesome!

Buy the slabs at Costco and cut them myself at home. Tend to go with New York or Rib-eye depending on which is most discounted on my day of visit. Also purchase roasts at under $6 a lb. Into the Pressure cooker/crockpot it goes. A few hours later... magic. You can save a bundle cutting the slabs yourself into the exact thickness you want and buying the inexpensive roasts.

Most of the time around here, I've seen local butcher shops offering bulk meat sales. Can always talk with them, or see if they can put you in contact with a local farmer who raises meat (versus dairy) cattle. Or just talk to farmers. If they don't do it, they may know who does and put you in touch.

Certainly different at Coscto in the US than in Canada if the whole section of meat isn't that much cheaper than the steaks cut from it. Our local Costco has sirloin steaks, but also the whole sirloin that they are cut from, and the difference in price is $10 per kilogram. Makes a huge difference. Even better when the whole sirloin is on sale. Ditto for the tenderloin. However, local Costco(New Brunswick, Canada) I never see Chuck Roll, not whole, not even pieces (chuck roast and such), however we were at at Costco Business center in Montreal and they had it. Would have picked it up, if I hadn't already had a whole sirloin in the cart that was on special.

Not so good a candidate for at home as you need a saw for every cut. In the end, it's just a filet and a new york strip attached by a bone, so you could just get those boneless primal and pair up some steaks.

I’d love to be able to butcher my own. Heck, I’d LOVE to raise my own beef. That said, I have the know how, I do not have the strength or energy to accomplish the physical tasks of butchering. Or the work required to raise beef. All I can say is take special care of your health while you have it cause once it’s gone, good luck getting any part if it back. 30 years of end stage renal failure has taught me valuable lessons albeit, too little, too late. 🙁
