Me, too. I used to do a lot of ballroom dancing, and a couple of years after I stopped I realized that I never wore long dresses, palazzo pants, etc. anywhere else and purged them. Now my closet has room for the things I actually wear - but it was still a wrench parting with some of the items and the memories connected to them.

@@bethmabee So did I. I have a rack full of ballroom dance dresses, but just won't be doing much (or at least AS much) of that anymore. Even if I kept a handful, it would be more than enough. It sure is hard to part with a dress that holds wonderful memories. I've taken pictures of my dresses before letting them go. Well, onward & upward!

I discovered that too.

I’m guilty of just wearing what I like most all the time at the expense of some pieces in my closet not being worn at all. I end up wearing the same things over and over again. Our style is ours alone. We create it. It makes us feel good to wear what we like. I’m starting to go through and switch it up! Variety is the spice of life! Thanks Kay!

These 5 tips are bang on. I fall into the trap of buying glamorous clothes that only work at Christmas, but not for walking the dog or going to music lessons! I am working on it , but may have to wear sequins on my next dog walk lol!

I saw on the internet about someone who wore bridesmaids dresses from weddings she had been in bowling, shopping etc. She had been told “you’ll be able to wear them again”. So she did - it was more as a joke & she did have fun with it.

That's funny because ever since I started walking(a lot) our big dog my wardrobe has gone to pot!! When you're out in the rain and cold and you come back inside and the dog shakes mud all over you it doesn't exactly motivate you to wear nice things. Then there's the sweet loving dog rubbing his head on you (because he loves you so much) and you are wet( and smell like a wet dog). Love my dogs though and couldn't live without them!!

I've had a lot more success finding something to wear when I take the time to hang whole outfits together. I'll usually switch it up regardless, but having the basic concept in front of me saves a lot of time.

Hmmmm it depends also on body shape. I have big shoulder if I wear a shirt I look like a man , I need to wear tight fitting tops to try to minimize volume

That is what I've done for years. I have wooden hangers.....I have pants ..tops....cardigans....all together. Sometimes I put accessories in a baggie and hang too.

I really loved this. I have a closet full of clothes. FULL! I am retired, and that was the hardest decision for me to make...what do I wear besides a suit? Thank you so much for your blogs and videos!! Love, Jeanie

Another reason that I have discovered is that I often love clothes that require ironing (or some other special care like hand-washing) that I really don’t often have the extra time to do. When I am getting dressed, I often have a closet full of clothes that I love but that need ironing and are not ready to be worn. I am leaning to say “no” to things that require special care, not matter how much I love them.

@@williamkunkel8293 Yes, we have steamer too. Mine is on a stand and I use it most of the time, rarely iron unless no other option. PS for trouser hems that curl a little on lighter weight trousers I use my hair straighteners which work well - also a great way to straighten ribbon for crafts

I never buy whole outfits but colors that “Go with”. Thanks to your channel I’m digging into my jeans and tee and switching to adding soft pretty essentials . I’ve got the basics. It’s reassuring to know I’m doing a lot right , thanks Kay

My problem is I have clothing in multiple sizes. Unfortunately my weight fluctuates so I'm hesitant to get rid of things. Currently I'm dieting and expect to lose 10-15 lbs per my doctors orders. I am hoping this will get the ball rolling with summer coming and lots of support from my husband. He is being very helpful. I have alot of nice clothes that I would like to wear again! ⚘

I've got to visit the blog and take the quiz! I still have the 1981 book & color swatches: Color me beautiful. Wearing the right colors for our skin under tones close to our face makes a big difference. I'm a Spring & can't wear black. I do navy blue or a lower cut neckline with pearls or gold necklace.

I agree that a simple color pallet makes it much easier to swift gears. Great tips Kay. I have to remember not to do colors that are not in my color pallet even though they are trending now or the sales person says try it on. I have found if I buy that yellow top that is not in my color pallet, it ends up hanging in my closet. I call them clothes hangers. ha ha. I have found I need to incorporate the trendy colors in a scarf or purse.

Wear what makes you feel comfortable and amazing. If a sales person wants you to try something on, and you don't like it, have the confidence to say no . If the sales person keeps insisting, time to find a different place to shop.

We do not have much closet space in Hong Kong. How about doing a piece on how to arrange clothes, scarves and purses for easy accessibility and change of seasons?

I think I over think my closet and think it needs help, when in fact I'm doing what you recommend! One area that could be tweaked is paring down signature colors. I've done your style evaluation and it was right on, and can check all the boxes on the list of essentials, so maybe this color tweak is going to be a focus. You have great ideas and your videos are always thoughtful and helpful!!

My f by favorite way to choose a color pallet is to use Carol Tuttles Dressing Your Truth system. All of my clothes work together now and packing for a trip is a snap. Even better is what I've learned about myself and others. Thank you, This was helpful

Super video! As I move forward in my life I am working on being more deliberate in all aspects of my life. Previously and sometimes now I am flying by the seat of my pants. I make choices with my fashion randomly as well as grocery shopping. The same thing would happen with organizing and cleaning my home. This randomness seemed to work for me, however it caused a lot of stress. Now, I’m going to follow your guidance as well as the FlyLadyPlus system and to meal plan. My goal is to get it together and live a more peaceful life. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

Before you start, get your colors done. Nothing worse than organizing your whole wardrobe around colors that are really fashionable that make your skin look awful! I used to sew most of my clothes and loved summer colors I spent days sewing lined wool blazers, etc, then found out I was a winter. When I started wearing the right colors, people knew I looked better didn’t know what it was so asked me if I’d gotten a new haircut or lost weight.

Great tips, Kay! Going to determine what neutrals and signature colours would work for me. Will give my already decluttered closet full of colour and prints a second look to see how I can pair all that I have (lots of old and new cute items!) and again donate clothes that don't work with everything. As a 73 yr. old retiree I still want to look great in my beautiful casual clothes which are now my go to's. On a twice weekly basis I amp up my casual look for in-person lunch, dinner or shopping by adding "bling." Thank you and stay safe, Rosie 🇨🇦

What a great video with spot on tips! I am in a temporary situation now because I have a cast on my left ankle that hits just below my knee. I can only wear wide legged bottoms, which means that a lot of my tops don’t look right with them. I don’t need to buy lost of tops that I will get a lot of wear out of for the next month. This too shall pass!

Another wonderful video with great information. Unlike some of the ladies below who buy for the glam life, I tend to buy more athletic wear and then have very little to wear when I want/need to 'go out'. I work in an office on a college campus. The department I work in is business casual Monday-Thursday and then we can wear college t-shirts and nice jeans on Friday (we work 1/2 day on Friday). I've always tried keeping neutral pants in my closet and a variety of different types of shirts. The issue I have is that I get in a rut. I tend to wear the same outfits over and over. You've given me a lot to think about.

Dear Kay The beauty of your spirit shows in your channel. A lot of truth about what your comments. I have a lot of handloomed and hand embroidered clothes because I love arts and crafts but I recognize that those blouses/ dresses are not very practical in The Northern Virginia Area. I tend to buy those garments because I love the craftmanship and buying directly from the artisans. They look great while traveling but not in "normal " life.

Same! I bought a few yoga pants, shorts and racer back tops in basic AND trendy colors, and some extra long t-shirts (no white! lol) . My cows don't appreciate it, but it makes me feel younger and put together even while doing chores, which makes working outside much more fun. 😀

Same here! My husband is still teasing me about a “garb” I came out to work in the yard in! Denim capris, that didn’t fit, white socks with clogs , an oversized white, stained, sweat jacket, that was my mother’s, 14 years ago! Love knowing I'm not the only one. I do make pretty aprons for outside and inside. But sometimes I forget I gathered some eggs in there pocket and decide to clean stales and mash an egg in my pocket..lol Life is Good though just wish the UPS truck knew I wasnt a bum when he pulls up..lol🤣

When I consider buying something new, I ask myself if It will be one of the first things I will reach for when looking for something to wear. If the answer is no, I leave it in the store. I also iron everything as it comes off the clothes line, so everything is ready to wear. I have an eclectic wardrobe, however much of it is 50s vintage and boho. However as you said having wardrobe essentials are what brings it together. I love this age, I wear what makes my heart happy not what others think I should. Such freedom.

Love your advice. I really need to work on getting my wardrobe working for me. We recently moved out of state and I spent almost an hour trying on my clothes to see if I had something to wear to church. Well I had gotten rid of a couple of pairs of heels that were killing my feet and by doing that discovered that I couldn't wear anything!! After trying on all my church clothes I ended up feeling terrible and I was crying. I thought about why I felt so bad and thought that this scenario must have happened to other women too. I thought I should be able to put something on that fits well and makes me feel good. I'm working now( bit by bit) on getting pieces that put a smile on my face rather that make me cry because I look and feel uncomfortable in them. It's definitely more challeging as we age but you have shown us that it can be done!! Thank you and God bless you!!!

Bless you! It is a challenge. But yes, look for pieces that make you happy and that make you feel authentic. And that work for your real lifestyle. It’s a process. Hang in there!

I resemble these remarks. I think I’ll go clear out those dressy Clothes and replace them with more retirement clothes. I buy dressy jackets I’ll never wear. I have more of a Jean jacket, bomber jacket lifestyle. My jewelry doesn’t always fit my lifestyle either. Thanks Kay.

Hahaha! I hear you. I had to muster up the strength to resist buying another blazer recently. I’m all for having a few blazers in a casual wardrobe. But there is a limit! 😉

Very helpful, thanks. Even though I also eliminated yellow, orange, warm reds and purple, too, decades ago after my color analysis, there are still so many colors to choose from. I’m guessing that you are a Summer palette, like me.

I think that is one reason that I’m waiting to build my wardrobe because I have so much weight to lose and don’t want to spend lots of money on things that hopefully won’t fit me at the end of the year. So now, it is cheap clothes during the weight loss time frame until I can spend real money on quality pieces when I am at my ideal weight. I won’t be looking very fashionable during the weight loss stages, though😂

I lost 50 pounds about 2 years ago. While waiting to get back into my old clothes, I shopped consignment shops and Goodwill. You can find basic pieces at Goodwill pretty cheap. My wardrobe was small during weight loss. I didn't want to spend money on clothes I was determined not to wear next year.

Great video and I am working on building my wardrobe with your help. One thing you did not mention that I think for me is a reason sometimes I don’t have anything to wear is that I don’t want to spend the money on a classic piece that will work for years to tie outfits together. For example a blazer , a good pair of boots or shoes, etc. I will see it in the store but not buy because of the price and then later wish I bought it. Thanks for your encouragement and help!

Try buying those kind of pieces from local consignment shops. You'll get what you need at a much lower price. Some dressier cardigans can serve the same purpose, and usually cost much less.

I call my style modern classic. I try to dress a fairly classic style but with modern touches to keep my looks contemporary.

I would add...buying clothes for the weather in your location. I follow so many cute fashion bloggers including you. However I live in Arizona. We hardly need sweaters, blazers or jackets! Yet I have purchased some because they are so cute! But I rarely have the opportunity to wear them :(

If you don’t like dressing casually then don’t! You dress for YOU first and foremost! If dressing up makes you feel good and feel your best, then dress that way, even if you are at home. There is a stylist here on you tube and on IG named Christie Ressel and she is a huge promoter of this. I am totally the opposite of you. I have a closet full of beautiful things that I do t wear because I like to always be comfy, amd as I doNt work anymore, I wear athleisure usually.
