    For chicken-raising questions, buy Becky's guide to raising backyard chickens. I bought it years ago, and the book answered my questions. Plus, Becky has so many chicken videos. Even something as simple as the diatomaceous earth that Becky recommends is a game changer.

    I love your new look. If it wasn't for your voice, I'd think you were someone else. Thank you for opening my eyes. I need to get my hands dirty. My chickens deserve it. I never clean the coop. There is poop 💩 everywhere. How would I like to live like that. NO WAY Poor birds! And 6 months now, their waterer has never been cleaned by me. My husband did it once. I don't want to touch it. A friend once said, "If you won't drink it, then don't give it to your chickens." I guess I should put myself in their lifestyle just for one day. Watching this video thankfully kept me from that. Thank you, Becky Sunshine ! ❤❤❤❤ God Bless you 😊

    I don't have chickens but I do have 4 pet homing pigeons that are retired and kept in screened area. The female was a rescue and near death. The vet gave meds and she rebounded but still had recurrences of diarrhea. I added ropa-b to the water. She only has a little runny poop the day before she lays an egg. Ropa-B is from Italy I think. Viking King carries it. It is made from oregano. The water stays cleaner. All of them seem to have benefited with the natural intestinal flora in their gut. It is organic. I love the smell. I just wonder if chickens would benefit the same way.

    I saw a video recently that you could put a piece of copper pipe in your chicken’s water, or any of your livestock water, and it helps keep down the algae growth. I’ve been doing that in all the chicken waters I use (I have 7 different waterers so that throughout the day the waters could be in the shade or if they tip one over they have other ones to get to) and I will say it works. It’s sort of freaked me out at first because it made the water very dark and murky and then I realized the copper was pulling the algae that was embedded in the plastic out. You may think your waterers are clean, but the copper really pulls out the algae. Now I wash all their waters on Sunday and they barely start to get dirty around Friday or Saturday.

  • @BeckysHomestead

    @BeckysHomestead

    7 ай бұрын

    The copper “rust” on the pipes. you might want to liken it to rust, is called copper sulfate and it kills plants. That is what makes copper flashing, outside clocks, etc turn greenish☀️❤️☀️

    1. For sick birds get a small bowl of water with a table spoon of apple cider vinegar. Dip the bread into water and give to chicken. 2. Keep water clean and scrub weekly with dish soap. 3. Deworm with DE in their feed. Deworm all animals. 4. Give meat everyday. 5. Keep coop clean 6. Put sand on ground 7. Build a big coop to accommodate big flocks.

    So Becky, what is the square footage per chicken? I have eight hens in a coop that is 8’wx8’lx6’h. And its3’ off the ground. The attached run, made of 1/2” hardware cloth, runs around the coop and is 8’wx28’lx 6’h with a corrugated roof. The chickens can get under the coop for added security. The run also has a 2’w hardware cloth predator apron extending 2’ out from the run under the soil. Due to heavy predator pressure the chickens can not free range. Is my coop and run big enough for the 8 hens? They get organic layer pellets, black oil sunflower seeds, some whole corn in winter, dehydrated soldier fly larva, fresh water with apple cider vinegar and a large bunch of fresh greens from the garden daily. They also have a kiddie pool with sand, DE and earth for dust bathing. I clean their coop out under their roosts about every 3-4 days. I use CoopN Compost clay granules on the floor before sprinkling the coop floor with fresh pine shavings. In spite of this a few of the hens have diarrhea. I’ve soaked their behinds in warm Epsom salts water in the warmer weather. This helped most of them, but two still have the problem. I used to give them all a tiny bit of raw hamburger when they first started laying because they were eating their eggs. They stopped eating their eggs but got diarrhea. I stopped the meat, but they went back to cracking and eating eggs occasionally. What am I doing wrong?🤔

  • @Thingys-Jill

    @Thingys-Jill

    8 ай бұрын

    You are not doing anything wrong! You don't say if they are bantams or full-size chickens, but you have 64SF of floor space in your coop less any obstructions such as in-coop feed or waterers. If you figure 4SF of coop space for each bird and 10SF of run space for each bird, you're good. It is imperative that your coop have plenty of ventilation which should be located above where the heads of the birds would be roosting (near the top of the coop) even in winter. It should also have like a screened door for cross ventilation in summer heat. Give them cucumbers and pumpkin puree or other squash, which helps stop diarrhea. They also get weeds from the yard/garden except not anything from the nightshade family (tomatoes, potatoes, etc.). They also get leftovers. I personally don't give my girls ACV more than maybe once-in-awhile. Chickens are known to get internal parasites spring and fall (or so I've been told) and there are dewormers that are liquid and can be put in the water. I use the deep litter method and find it to work just fine. Just sprinkle some more pine shavings under the roost 1x/week and clean the entire coop out every 6 months. I do rake the run area about 1x/month and add dirt/sand to their dust bath. They still like to dig and sit in the hole they make! I've kept chickens for several years and my girls have not ever (knock on wood) gotten ill (except one that died of a heart attack). I hope what I've written is helpful to you. Edited to add that I've been known to add the contents of one of my probiotic capsules to some oatmeal each spring and fall to combat any chance of the spring/fall potential parasite issue.

    @@Thingys-Jill Thanks Jill for the advice and encouragement. You asked what size my hens are: Marans, Sapphire Gems, New Hampshire Reds, Auraconas, Black Sex Links. I originally had ten hens, but lost one Auracona and one New Hampshire Red. Not sure why they died, all other hens seem fine. Right now, they are molting and not happy.

    @@janetwestrup411 Mine are all molting too and, interestingly enough, my 2 black Silkies are changing color. Go figure. It's not their 1st molting, so I don't know why. Edited to add: give them 20% feed in winter and 16% in summer. Save your egg shells, let them dry, crumble them up and feed them back to the chickens.

    Do you deworm them with the DE? Mix it in their feed tub so they get some every day. I would keep feeding some kind of meat every day.

    Hi Becky, I tried the feed ingredients the way you suggested with DE mixed in, but the DE just sifted to the bottom of the barrel and they never got any. I use heavy pvc pipes for their feeders because they were wasting it on the ground. I do have a kiddie pool for their dust bath and I put DE in that. I’ve heard that winter squashes and pumpkin works well to deworm them also. I’m not sure they have worms, have never seen evidence of that.

    Diatomaceous earth only works when dry and doesn't work in the GI tract.

    It's physics. Once wet from saliva, the microscopic sharp edges soften and lose its cutting edge. Diatomaceous earth causes insects to dry out and die by absorbing the oils and fats from the cuticle of the insect's exoskeleton. Its sharp edges are abrasive, speeding up the process. It remains effective as long as it is kept dry and undisturbed. @@BeckysHomestead

    I disagree with meat every day. I give my chickens some form of meat protein once a week. If they free range (which mine do) then they are already getting daily meat from bugs, frogs & lizards in the yard. I also use sand and I scoop it every day. I use a sand flea rake which makes very quick work of it. 🍻

    There are not that many bugs and stuff when chickens free range on the same property every day. Also once chickens are over two years old they don’t lay as many eggs unless you feed a little meat every day. That is why industrial egg farms sell the chickens to make unto chicken nuggets at 2 years old. It’s a short, fast turn over.☀️❤️☀️
