5 Reasons Why You Should Try Gouache | Portrait Painting Tutorial in Gouache

This video is about five reasons why you should try gouache over oil and acrylic. In this video I have explained five advantages of gouache paint while painting the portrait of a girl. The first advantage is that the gouache paint dries quite fast and as a result it allows layering of paint easily. It was helpful for painting the skin tone of this portrait where I layered a lot of different colors together in order to capture the lifelike skin tone. The second advantage with gouache is that it is an organic medium because it doesn’t contain any solvent or any such things, it contains gum Arabic as a binder which is a natural extract so for those people who are searching for an organic medium to paint with, gouache is an excellent choice. The third advantage is that, it is water based and thus it is resoluble. Apart from this, it is also very handy for cleaning the brushes and palette because it doesn’t require any extra solvent or cleaner. The most significant advantage with gouache is that it allows infinite blending time, which is very essential for realism because it requires a lot of blending in order to attain a particular effect on a certain area. With gouache, a painted area can be reworked after a gap of several days because the colors are instantly activated once a damp brush rolls over the surface of painted area. The other important advantage that you get using gouache is that it dries matte and as a result it is very easy to photograph your finished piece.

Look how satyajit ji is struggling to lighten the face , he is adding highlights repeatedly but they are not showing

You have a very good observation. I was actually saving the brightest bright for the very last touches and thus I was using the highlighted values repeatedly with lesser intensity.

Let me tell u a great problem with gouache, it is very difficult to lighten an area with gouache , white gouache creates a milky effect and white turns into grey on drying , u keep on adding the white to lighten the value and lose the chroma of the color, gouache is one of the most difficult medium to try

Ya its true that in gouache adding highlight is tough but it is only in case of student grade gouache where the amount of pigment is very less and thus the intensity of color is poor. Whereas, if you use a artist grde giuache then in that case the white is highly pigmented and is really bright. You will rather need to use it very cautiously, otherwise it will become too bright than your expected result.

Gouache is a water based color similar to watercolor but the only difference is that it can be user both in opaque and transparent style and often gives a matte finish once the color dries.
