To be honest, if Messi had only scored the 3 open play goals, his performance would still have been by far the highlight of the world cup. Nobody cares about the penalties he scored - when he had the ball at his feet, he was unstoppable. Produced the greatest individual displays against Croatia etc, produced the greatest passes, the wondergoal against Mexico where he singlehandedly lifted Argentina out of their turmoil. No other player this season has had such an inspirational performance in any competition today. Put it this way - if the world cup had happened NOW (in June) in exactly the same way - absolutely nobody would bat an eye about who should win it. The guy was possessed by Maradona. Argentina would straight up have been knocked out with ease without him.

guys 3 more things- -Historically, in a WC year, the WC is given priority as compared to other achievements in case of the ballon d'or, so it does favour Messi here(especially since he was the best player at that world cup too). -Haaland has the most big chances missed by a mile in the top 5 leagues, which is a real shame for a striker(im not saying he's bad, but many players would have been able to achieve the same goal tally that haaland did with that man city team). -Messi won MOTM in EVERY SINGLE STAGE of the World Cup, now thats just unheard of and coming from a 35 year old its almost unbelievable. most important thing for everyone to remember is that the ballon d'or is given for the best player, and not the top goalscorer and Messi has, in my humble opinion, edged out haaland there.

Had only one MOTM performance against Leipzig in Champions league whilst the likes of Rodri,Gundogan,Silva,KDB had MOTM performances in all the rest of knockout stages and final of UCL. Didn't contribute anything for Norway in EURO qualifiers.

@@draza9000 haaland scored twice and assisted once against bayern while psg were better of playing with 10 men than with messi horrendous performance. psg had about 2.3 goals per game this season with messi while they averaged about 2.7 goals in the 2020 season and also might be good to mention the context of the games both Madrid and inter were staying low with their back line while in the finals france kept their defence high during both the open play goals haaland has helped city multiple times he parried defenders away from bernardo silva for the first man city goal against Real in the second leg if. So if messi's teammates hadn't scored those penalties and France was to win the World Cup this would be a different story wouldt it. The Golden Boot is for the top goal scorer, and Haaland deserves it, but that's not the same as being the best player. Haaland was a non-factor in the biggest matches for City, and without Gundogan & Rodri rescuing them in the FA Cup & UCL finals there would have been no treble. Messi carried Argentina to the World Cup title, and he was the highest rated player not only for PSG and in Ligue 1, but also across all of the top 5 leagues by a large margin. With the titles at stake, Messi carried his teammates, and Haaland's teammates carried him. There is no question that Messi deserves the Ballon d'Or.

Haaland ghosted in important games this season. He didn't show up in the semifinals against Madrid, he didn't show up in the FA cup which led to a treble. (if Gundogan doesn't score those two goals out of thin air we wouldn't be having a conversation about a treble winning side), and he had a horrible game in the final against Inter. He is the only pure strike in that team, to go missing for those important games is not acceptable. Goals doesn't equal a Ballond'or and that is why they have the golden boot as well. Messi was THE most important player in that team and was almost dragging them through every round with playmaking, assists and goals. If it wasn't for him who knows if Argentina would of even gotten through the group stage.

Listen, this delusion on disappearing in 'important game' is bullshit. Haaland was brought in to achieve champions League glory. Not only was he a top goalscorer to that, he was a top goalscorer to the premier League and contributed hugely to the treble itself. Not to mention he broke the premier league goal scoring record. Everyone is opting for Messi to win the ballondor to make it seem like a romantic season of finally world cup glory for the GOAT. He was great in the world cup but the keeper, martinez was the entire game changer for Argentina but no-one wants to acknowledge that because he isn't a big enough name to put under the ballondor award. Messi is the GOAT, no-one can deny that. But this bias is disgusting to see, Messi can disappear the entire tournament and score the winning goal in the world cup final and automatically be the favourite for the ballondor. People will bring up most chances created stats for Ligue un etc, but he was brought in for the ucl. They didn't win it. Not only that, Messi had a very rough season in the league. Don't jump to a different season in an attempt to justify him winning the ballondor this season because that's not how it works. If haaland didn't have the season he had, Messi would take it and no one would care, but it's plain robbery to see it happening in the current circumstances. Take out legacy and all of that aside, comparing two players as neutrals from beginning of the season to the end, it's clear to see haaland takes it.

Since you like your 'if' statements: If Martinez never saved that shot from Muani, France might've been the world champions. Mbappe taking home a second world cup and being the most instrument piece of French success internationally. If Martinez never done so brilliantly in penalties and saves in normal time, Argentina would have been knocked out no matter how good Messi was. The whole Argentina team was excellent, Messi wasn't at his best that tournament yet was still at a level normal players would find difficult to play against. But Martinez was the piece of the puzzle that brought Messi his long achieved wish of the world cup.

To everyone saying Haaland deserves to win this year.. Ballond'or is given to the best player in a particular year. Trophies do play an important role, but it's based on the overall performance of the player. If Haaland deserves the ballond'or then he should've excelled in every field for eg, goals, assists ,dribbling, playmaking, etc.. he's gotta be the standout player of the team. In this case he wasn't, he bagged a shitload amount of goals for a debut season which is impressive, but he isn't even that influential (like De Bruyne, Gündoğan for instance) even in his absence the team thrives. Whereas Messi on the other hand still managed to get 50+ G/A (without friendlies), and excel in every other field, 4 MOTM in WC, that's what makes him the better player. It's somewhat like the 2021 ballond'or , Lewa only had more goals than Messi other than that he was nowhere close to his quality. Haaland with UCL, FA cup, Premiere League and Messi with WC, French Ligue still Messi has an edge with the WC. This will be a close call, either of them can win.

I feel like the Ballon dor is always going to the player who has the most hype. That's the only consistent factor i see. I feel like if it's about winning it should go to Alvarez (World Cup, Treple) if it's about Goals it should go to Haaland (top scorer PL and CL) and if it's about individuall performance it should be Messi (De Bruyne is pretty close but i think the insane World Cup performance gives Messi the edge). I thought the Ballor Dor will go to Messi but now that he goes to the MLS I'm pretty sure Haaland will win it because he gained a lot of hype by winning CL and Messi will lose a lot by going to the MLS. I personally would give it to De Bruyne because even though i said Messi before because World Cup i feel like a player who plays his "second half" in the MLS should not win the Ballon Dor. But i think Haaland winning it will be more likely.

To be honest, if Messi had only scored the 3 open play goals, his performance would still have been by far the highlight of the world cup. Nobody cares about the penalties he scored - when he had the ball at his feet, he was unstoppable. Produced the greatest individual displays against Croatia etc, produced the greatest passes, the wondergoal against Mexico where he singlehandedly lifted Argentina out of their turmoil. No other player this season has had such an inspirational performance in any competition today. Put it this way - if the world cup had happened NOW (in June) in exactly the same way - absolutely nobody would bat an eye about who should win it.

It's always very difficult for a goalscorer to triumph over a much more complete player like Messi when the two players perform well in a season, and that also explains why no matter how hard CR7 tries he will never match Messi. CR7, Lewandowski and Haaland are all of the same breed - dominantly goalscorers. Besides, the Ballon d’Or takes into account so many things and when you go into details Messi almost always comes out on top.
