    Thank you, depends on your preferences. if you want to cut out the light to achieve 1/50s shutter speed, variable ND will be more suitable, if you only need it for stills and occasionally for vide, those fixed ones are OK.

    [ Any help would be greatly appreciated ]: I'm stuck between choosing to buy either the A7ii and the A6500. I shoot both video and photography, mostly video but I don't want to lose the option of taking great pictures as well. My plan was to upgrade to full frame on my next camera, but the a6500 caught my eye with the 4k video. From the reviews i've seen the A7ii shoots great video as well but i'm unsure of which to choose for the best all around camera with videography being a bit more important for me. What has me stuck the most: The overheating issue of the A6500 scares me and with it not being full frame should I go for the a7ii? What would you recommend for me between these two when looking for an affordable solid all around camera, with a slight edge on video? Any other recommendations are welcome. (Keeping in mind my budget is around these two cameras range)

    A6500 is better for video because of 4K, hybrid autofocus, picture profiles and so on. Mine has never overheated. Stills quality is still excellent with A6500.

    Hi Man ! I really like your work and how efficient your are for this kind of review ! I think that the a6500 with the *three f1.4 sigma lenses* ( yes the 50 is not here yet ) you can achieve the perfect combo to achieve the *cinematic look* that you can get with the a7 fullframe bodies with bigger and much more expensive glass.. what do you think ?

  • @TheHybridShooter

    Wait.. So when you shoot on a Red / Arri you have a crop factor of 1.5 as well when you put a lens on it ? even if the sensor is big ? So a 50mm on a red is actually a 75mm like on our a6500 ? ?

    With Sony full-frame, you have to understand what you're getting into. Seriously expensive and quite heavy lenses, with the exception of the Samyang 35mm pancake. Only the a7rIII has an autofocus and silent shutter that matches the a6500. For street, you don't need an extreme shallow DOF, and the smaller system is noticeably less intrusive. For landscapes, you can always stitch and blend, but higher resolution also means you'll probably need a computer upgrade, too. A lighter system allows you a lighter tripod and a smaller gimbal, which means you can go to places that would be too tiring otherwise. Unless you're very dedicated, chances are you're not going to lug a heavy gear with you all day while traveling, especially with children. If you can't afford the r2 or r3, you can't afford the GMaster lenses, either. The most important thing is to just go out and shoot, practice and share, rather than agonize over details that you can only see at 400% zoom. The best photos and movies ever taken were shot with gear a thousand times worse than the a6500. The only time I don't recommend the a6500 is for longer than 30 minute clips. If you can't see the LCD while shooting 4K outdoors, get a SmallHD Focus Monitor, which also helps with the heat and battery life issues, while providing focus and exposure aids. With the a6500, a pancake lens and silent shooting, you can stay under the radar. Not to mention the cost of an a7rIII with three GM lenses, it's like buying a car.

    That depends on how you use the camera. The kit lens is actually sharp enough for most uses, so you can get it for the situations where you need IS but you don't want to use the gimbal and you can use Sigma lenses without stabilization on gimbal or tripod. Sony also makes 35mm and 50mm F1.8 OSS, those are optically good lenses with IS.

    Hi H.S.! Thanks for your informative vids! Being a Sony A6000- and MFT-shooter myself, I always love to hear your thoughts. You mentioned, that there´s in-camera distortion and CA correction for Sigma lenses in the Sony A6xxx lineup. How does this work? Did Sony (in all honesty :-) include Sigma´s correction data in their firmware?

  • @TheHybridShooter

    @TheHybridShooter

    The camera basically reads Information from the lens on how to correct the video and JPEGs. For the RAW files the information about lens is stored as metadata and the profile is applied in Lightroom for example.

    how do you deal with the extreme edge tearing and ghosting in low light video? it seems the noise reduction algorithm is poorly optimised and while the image is clean, it's not usable if exposed to the left and has some decent movement in it. looks like it's been compressed to 5 mbit/s

  • @TheHybridShooter

    @TheHybridShooter

    I have never had any issues that you are describing, it may be caused by low shutter speed. If you don't like the noise reduction, you can try different picture profile or make your own, with NR turned down.

  • @TheHybridShooter

    @TheHybridShooter

    I think that it is caused by lens image stabilization, I was able to get a tiny bit of horizontal line ghosting, with stabilized lens, in complete darkness, but nowhere near the amount shown in that video. I would definitely never shoot in such conditions so it is not an issue for me and it should be possible to remove that with rolling shutter repair in premiere pro. I will take a look at that NR, at the moment I honestly don't know how to do it, since didn't need to adjust it.

    Personally I love the small minimal form factor for the a6500. And it pairs excellently with a variety of lenses - including a lot of native and very good manual and vintage glass. Some small and light weight. The mirrorless format's main advantage was its small form factor. Panasonic has maximized the features and processing for the smaller sensor size but it has a bulkier form factor. And pricewise too it is higher. Fuji now has come out with an aps-c with ibis but a crop factor of 1.7 for 4k and at a much heavier price. The real extra features that the non sony cameras provide are better screens, viewfinders, touch features and due to a smaller sensor (video 4k) more processing. Eventually sony too will come up with an updated version with more processing power and increments at several levels at the same price point but I doubt they will change the sensor. And the a6500 will become even more of a bargain. Today an almost new a7r2 is going for under 2k$. The lens database for original e-mount glass is also increasing : photonarmy.com/e-mount-lens-database/

  • @TheHybridShooter

    Form factor is a matter of preference, some users actually prefer lager cameras with better handling and more controls, I personally like both big and small cameras for different purposes. I'm personally not sure if Sony will keep improving APS-C or they will just offer different variants like A5500 and keep the most advanced futures for the full frame.

    I think sony is very aware of developing both formats - its a bonus for their system and they know that many of their users work both with ff and crop. Also the technology that they provide is one that they give in different sensor sizes. There is however a threshold problem and for all systems. Sensor resolution has already gone up from 16 to 24 (only exception was samsung with a BSI 28). Fuji too in its new upgrade has not changed the sensor - simply added ibis - a better viewfinder - more software processing. Its 4k is still limited. Sony a6500's 4k needs more processing power so screen dims - how much more can the sensors and processors be maximized. And that goes too for 4/3rds. Each system has heightened its own bar.

    Sensor resolution or image performance in general is not a critical factor for A6500, 24 mpix is more than enough for APS-C users, for video it actually may be too much resolution. Problem is the usability and lens section. That is what APS-C users are complaining about and Sony is unfortunately making no progress there.

    I don't see any issue with the usability. Easy to customize, (I don't think more mechanical dials increases usability) lots of features - as to lens selection, certainly the native lenses that Fuji provides sony does not. For Fuji its a necessity and there is one sensor option. For sony - lenses are interchangeable and for someone invested in both sensors the lens choice has different criteria. And evidently there is an understanding with sigma to develop the aps-c line. There are a lot of 3rd party manual options as well as specialized video glass so its a very different kind of range. I see more 3rd party delegation - maybe also with af in the future

    I see big issues with usability, after using Panasonic G9 for one month, A6500 operation feels like it's 2004 again. For example switching from 4K to 1080p in menu is just ridiculous. I don't think that Sony particularly likes what Sigma is doing, if it wasn't for 16mm F1.4 I would have bought A7R III, now I just don't need to.

    Because FF lenses are made to cover larger sensor, so it makes no sense to me to carry around unnecessarily big and heavy glass that my APS-C camera can't use.

    I have not liked some of the Sigma lenses the 30mm stinks, the kit lens is way underrated. Good carry around camera is the Ricoh GRII but it's not cheap and is very hard to get both new & used. I have had luck with many Minolta man focus lenses from the 70's

    Paul McCarthy why do you not like the 30mm? It seems to get a lot of praise so I am thinking about returning my sony 35mm 1.8 to buy it.

    I don't like the focusing its seems to take longer, the one I used was borrowed for a couple weeks because I wanted to compare it to the Sony 35mm 1.8. I have used the Sony for a long weekend and I like it, but it's expensive. I just bought a 1978 24mm Minolta lens that I am waiting for, it was expensive but I have 4 other Minolta manuals that I love. 50mm 1.4, 50mm 1.7 28mm and a macro that I hardly use. I use the lit lens for wide shots and I think it's better than most people give it credit for. The Sony has OSS but what is amazing is that I can shoot the Minolta's hand held and get sharp images. I think it's the weigt of the lens and adapter that helps. I also plan to buy the A-7II Sony FF so I can still use my Minolta lenses on there. Sony needs to make a broader selection of lenses available for the APSC cameras. The a6500 has OSS built in and to get that camera it's at least twice as much. I love the a6000 for the value but not so much the lens selection. The a6500 with the Sigma should be better than the a6000 if that's the camera you own

    30mm f1.4 is the best lens for the system. It is tack sharp with excellent colors. I hate to admit it but it is on par with my gmaster 16-35 full frame lens.
