    No, the autofocus won't work in video. the stabilization also depends on the lens, IBIS is more effective at wide angles.

    I bought the a7iii with a Zeiss Batis 55 f1.8 and made my a6500 into a back-up or b-roll camera because: a) great IQ; (b) the ability to remove the 30 minute limit; (c) smaller size; (d) the Sony play memories app; (e) the APSC sony lenses 35 f1.8, 10-18; 18-105 and the Sigma 18-35 as well as the 16 f1.4. Having said that, I'm really itching to get a second a7iii and mount my Batis 25 f2.

    I wanted a really small kit so I picked up a used A6500 at a really good price along with the MC-11 adapter, small cage and third party charger with two extra batteries. I picked up several lenses and still have a very light weight kit. OTOH, I do like shooting with a pair of cameras. The price point and form factor of the A6500 have convinced me to stick with the crop sensor. I will see what Sony puts on the table with their next crop sensor camera and might pick one up to use alongside my A6500, OTOH, I would not mind at all shooting with a second A6500...

For instance shooting an indoor scene with the same settings and then in post seeing how much each camera recovers the highlights and shadows. Shooting a room exposing for the room and seeing how much of the outside through a window can be brought back would be a good test. Thx again for a great video.

    Great Video Hybrid Shooter! Please help me decide, I will only invest $3k max until i pay it off in 2 to 3 years. Which route should I go? I will use the camera for family and hiking purposes. What would be a good combo for $3k budget (cam and lens). Also,.I intend to keep it for 10years what would be the right option. Is FF lenses way more expensive than apsc by how much ratio do you think (same application or equivalent lenses) and do they have like a breakeven point let say after 2 years I can set aside another 1k for additional lenses, down the road which option can i save more. I'm considering fuji xt3 also since its new and lower in cost than a7iii. Pls help 😊

    Thank you! Spot on. A7iii offers more for the money. A6500 should cost 2 or 300 USD/EUR less. But do not discount portability. The A6500 with the 16-50mm is as large as a MFT or little larger than a P&S and you can put it in some winter coat pocket. If you use the Sigma 18-35mm the ISO advantage disappears as there are no 1.8 zoom lenses for the A7 series. You can shoot one stop more open. The zooms for the FF Sony are large and very expensive or average (24-70 f4). The Tamron 28-75 seems promising, it can be great for events (although some reviewers mentioned AF problems). I have 2 A7, 1 A7ii, 1A6000, 1 A6300 ( i shoot most gigs with 2 primes and I do not like to swap lenses on an assignment, if possible). I am thinking of selling my 3 FF bodies. Maybe I could buy the A7iii + Tamron 28-75for some occasions (i like portraits with the 55mm + A7ii), but at the end I may get similar results with the A6300 and Sigma 18-55. For travel I prefer the smaller form factor. Some landscape / nature photographers seem to have switched to MFT

  • @TheHybridShooter

    @TheHybridShooter

    Depends on the market. Here in Europe it seems like they forgot to drop the price of A6500, but in the US, you can get is under 1 000 dollars. Sigma 18-35 does indeed compensate for the sensor size but the usability and handling with that combination is not very good and the reach is quite short as well, so you can get similar results with 18-35 but with more hustle. A7 III + Tamron 28-75 and A6300 with some prime lens could be very good combination, but it seems like they stopped selling 28-75 in the Europe until the AF is fixed.

  • @stefpix

    @stefpix

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi - so I received the 18-35mm. Very sharp but as you said not the best handling. I sometimes need to hold a LED panel with the left hand and it is hard to quickly put the focus point on a subject's eye (with multiple persons I can not just rely on face / eye AF). So many times I wish the A6300 and A7ii had a joystick for AF that you can also move diagonally. I noticed that the battery drains really quickly with 18-35mm and MC-11. It may be a dealbreaker. I wonder if it drains the battery even when the camera is off. I will test more, but definitely with the Sigma primes I can shoot all day, not with the 18-35

    Thank you for this excellent video! Did you notice slightly slower and unreliable AF-C in video on the A7 iii with Sigma 16 f/1.4? Sometimes my camera won't focus at all or it will take around 6 seconds for it to focus on a person in the middle of the frame. (With the back of the head facing the camera, so face AF is irrellevant) The kit lens 28-70 isn't much better either and low light AF isn't very good either. Not with the 16mm also. There are two lines at the left and right when I mount the 16mm f1.4 to my A7 iii, what does that mean? When I place the focus point outside the lines the camera cannot focus at all.

    OK - yes I believe you: A7III is better than 6500.BUT: you have to pay not only more for it´s body - the lenses you need then makes it very expensive (min. 5000 Euro). So you have to decide, whether you really need the best (A7iii) or get lucky with a little bit less perfectness (6500). And second: in my opinion I like the less weight and size of 6500+lenses - so I take it with me mostly everywhere and that`s a huge advantage for me. So in conclusion: I don`t critize - you can think so but otherwise you can think different. I would like to have an A7III - but i can`t afford it with the view of follow-up costs and formfactor. Thank you for your effort in making this very good comaparison video!

    ".......... if you want excellent image quality sigma 18-35 and 50-100 art lenses are the only two zoom lenses for crop sensor that can fully utilize the sensor in A6500". That statement seems to contradict your previous sony lens reviews for A 6500 . Was on the fence about the A6500 and now you are effectively saying that to take full advantage of the sensor I need to buy an adapter and add a not so small zoom lens. For those of us that don't have the resources to " buy a couple of primes " whats the point of buying a small body ? I guess the search continues . Love to hear some APS-C alternatives

  • @TheHybridShooter

    @TheHybridShooter

    6 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure which reviews you mean, because the only two zoom lenses for APS-C e-mount that I have reviewed are Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and Sony 16-50mm kit lens and I have never said that the kit lens provides excellent image quality. High pixel density on crop sensors means that those sensors are very demanding on the lens sharpness. Sony, 18-105 F4 and 18-135 F3.5-5.6 are decent lenses, but only those two Sigma lenses can fully match the sensor capabilities (out of APS-C zoom lenses). That doesn't mean that the image quality with other lenses won't be good enough.

    The Sony a6500 isn't much cheaper but it is considerably older than the new Sony a7 III. Sony the recent years after the tremendous success of the Sony a7 series is more focused on full frame mirrorless cameras and full frame e-mount lenses. I would personally say that the build quality is the same, but that is just my opinion.

    I think tapered front of viewfinder where Sony is written on a7series head looks ugly. 6500 looks refined by not having that ugly and oddly placed viewfinder. I too love 6500 just because it looks smart and straight.

    Which one would you buy if you didn’t have any? I’m looking to buy one of them. Only have a Sony gs mark 5 right now but looking to upgrade. Thanks

    Well, I can’t really quantify how bad it is, if you already have the camera, I guess that you can see it yourself.

    u missed one thing. full pixel read out(No pixel binning). a7iii 5k to 4k. but a6500 6k to 4k. I am a editior. So 6500 is better than a7iii in shooting video. sharper footages. and a7iii has warm colour profile as default. check it out. No capturing real nature color. Its a main thing.

    No I didn't miss that both cameras have 24 mpix sensor so both shoot 6K downsampled to 4K. A7 III and A6500 have similar sharpness. Your results may be affected by lenses.

    One thing I discovered in moving up from the a6500 to the a7iii is that each of your prime is really two primes due to the ability to go into APSC or super 35 mode. For example, my 25 mm f2 Zeiss is now a 37mm f2.8 Zeiss; the 55 mm f1.8 Zeiss is now a 87 mm f2 Zeiss! So the cost of $1000 for each lens means that you're really paying for two prime lenses!

    That is truth, but you also loose resolution when using Super 35, and I would personally rather crop the pictures in post. It is useful for video though.

    Yes, it is about 10.2 megapixels.

    I really want that a7iii. I think I’m going to sell my a6500 soon. Although I really love the compactness of it.

    All the positive reviews of A7III tempted me to sell my A6500 and upgrade, since 2k really isn't that bad for a kickass FF body. But then I checked the prices for a few lenses... noooope, ain't happening. No way I can justify spending that much as a hobby photographer.

    There are some 3rd party lenses that aren't more expensive than APS-C counterparts, like the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 or Samyang AF primes.

    I know what you mean i was looking to upgrade from the point and shoot rx100 to the a7iii. The lenses killed any thought of that quickly. I just wanted a better camera for travel videos and photos. I dont make money off it so no way I could justify spending that much.

    I agree with you. A6500 user here and I’m happy with my sigma 16mm. Might get 18-105 and a 85 equivalent lens
