5 REASONS WHY ENGINEER LIKES THE NISSAN ARMADA OVER THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
There are many reasons to love the Nissan Armada, a full-sized, body-on-frame SUV, and specifically 5 reasons why Automotive Engineer David Chao likes it over the new 2023 Toyota Sequoia. David goes over the reasons one by one in detail. This may surprise you because generally speaking, David loves his Toyota's, but not this time around.

Good review, my 2005 Nissan Armada has 484,000 miles on it with the original engine and transmission. I did replace the condenser when my AC went our because something went through the grill and punctured it. My 18 year old Armada is still quiet and I just hauled our son's stuff to college in it and as a fellow engineer I like the Armada also.

Oh wow, glad to hear!
Sincerely thanks for your comments..... You are absolutely right ✌️
I just purchased a 2023 Armada SL for my wife and we love it. We are historically a Toyota family and I still have reservations about Nissan's resale value and reliability vs. Toyota, but only time will tell. We are a family of 6 and when my wife opened the tailgate on the Sequoia she said, "We're done here". Most of the dealers in Houston/Spring are also price gouging, tacking on $6K plus add-ons on most models and charging thousands of dollars for catalytic converter shields and other items that are marked up 500%. That stupid raised floor on the Sequoia is a "no go" for my active family. In the Houston area Sequoias are going for around $80K, which I think is outrageous. You can pick up an Armada SL in the low $50's (same price as a Limited 4Runner) and Nissan is currently offering 1.9% financing for 36 months, plus $1500 loyalty discount if you qualify. The V8 is nice, but what really won me over is the ride quality. This thing is AMAZINGLY smooth. Soaks up bumps and is a considerable improvement over the 2017 Armada. Power lift gate, heated seats, sun roof, 360 cameras, heated steering wheel, large infotainment screen, wireless Car play, etc... I paid $54K OTD and in this inflationary environment, I think that is a great value. Toyota, you priced yourself out of the market with the Sequoia for the average middle class family and some of us older people want a naturally aspirated V8.

@@amitkulkarni11 Yes, sticker on mine was $61445, but there are a ton of these on dealer lots throughout Texas (especially Houston area). Play hard ball with the dealer and don't be afraid to walk away. The Sequoia is exaclty like driving a truck. It doesn't have the full independent double wishbone suspension that the Armada has. Coming from a truck, the comfort level is amazing. Also the 3rd row seating is better on the Armada then the Sequoia. At the end of the day, I chose a 2023 Armada over the Sequoia. Accurate review and truthful. Keep it up.

The Infiniti QX80 is my favorite car and it is basically the Nissan Armada with an Infiniti badge. Thank you for this excellent review...

I totally agree! I just bought a 2023 Armada which is my 3rd Armada since owning my first one in 2008. The V8 is powerful and RELIABLE! Toyota is definitely going down the wrong path with using a V6 and electric motor combination for the Sequoia! The Armada rides as smooth as a Lincoln Town Car but still has SUV capabilities. LOVE IT!!!! My first Armada was a 2008 and had 230,000 reliable miles on it when I traded it. Buy this car and save money instead of the overpriced Sequoia, Tahoe,Yukon and Expedition.

I am very curious about the new gen armada. All I have seen about it, is that it too will have v6. Bummed about that. Curious how reliable a v6 will be. Not sold on the who turbo charged thing yet.
This vehicle is sold as the PATROL in the middles east and Australia. In the Aussie market they have a trim called the PATROL “WARRIOR” super cool. The VK56 motor is Nissan’s most underrated engine ever built.
I rented one for a 3,000 mile road trip. Excellent ride, very quiet and decent MPG if you are disciplined enough to not floor the gas pedal and hear the rumble of the VK56 V8 engine.
The reason why I like Nissan’s V8s, cause I’m a construction guy and needed reliable towing truck, which Nissan Titan is doing for me for last 13 years, I’m currently using 3 Titans and a 2015 Infiniti QX80, I’m so impressed with the smooth ride and a powerful power train.
Thanks David you made me re-consider my options. Keep it up. I can’t wait to see your other reviews before making any move. God bless.
Constantly clicking between 2WD and 4WD in Alaska is annoying. 4WD on side roads, then 2WD on main roads and highway, I can switch over several times in one trip. I thought I was sold on the LX or GX due to the full time 4WD, but just learned Armada has this too! I see there are fantastic deals to be had just one or two years used. This Armada looks like a fantastic deal - it's sized like an LX for less than GX money on the used market.
David, great analysis of the Armada. It was so good that I'm going to check one out at the local dealer. Thanks!
This is on the top of my list to purchase after purchasing our house. Love everything about this SUV. Great review!
This is a great review, I have a '97 QX4, bought it new, has 240'000mi., absolutely no mechanical issues, just regular and normal maintenance! Original paint and leather interior, perfect shape, I have and still do love this vehicle and the incredible reliability that it has given me. I really enjoy all of your reviews and this one for sure!!
Love the review. Thank you )
Great work David! I had a 05 Nissan Armada for 15 year and the only thing I ever did to it besides the maintenance was change the started., my son., because of the engine was so quite when he was learning to drive he hit the key and mess it up. And then a city worker ran the red light and wrecked my beautiful family vehicle.😢
The resale value on these is horrible, and that's why I just bought a 2022 SL with 22k miles. I paid just under $40k. You can't buy more vehicle for the money. I love these things for driving on the open road at 75 or 80 mph. It's quiet inside and heavy enough that it plows through cross winds and the rush of air from semis. Best of all it's not a Ford or GM. I'll take made in Japan all day every day. Thanks for the review!

I got a 2018 Armada and I must say it's an awesome and versatile vehicle. I can easily tow our travel trailer (31' overall length) or boat with it with no sweat at all. The comfort level on long trips is unmatched and the driving experience is great. The quality and value can't be beat.
Love seeing videos like this from people who actually know vehicles beneath the skin. Many automotive journalists don't actually know that much about cars. They automatically think smaller engines with turbos are the best things since sliced bread and whoever has the biggest infotainment screen wins. Not all changes are for the best. Many are touted as a benefit but the real reason was cost cutting. Do you think the Armada is as well built as the 4Runner? Would love to see a video like you did on the 4Runner and its build quality.
If you love the strong, silent type, hard to beat the Nissan Armada platform
Absolutely correct great value. I didn't know that about the power steering. I like it.
To buyers who are looking at the Armada and Sequoia: I would take a look at the Infinity QX80. You get Infiniti dealer experience including service department. You geta luxury brand that is fighting for market share given Infiniti's lack of products. And you get giant Infiniti discounts. Do not compare the QX 80's MSRP to others because it's all about actual out-the-door cost.

Yep! Agree with this whole review. The Armada is the best bang for the buck! Sequoia is expensive so I don’t really see the point. Armada is the next suv I’m planning to test drive !
I had a 22 Armada Midnight package and the screen went out in the first 6 months. Took it to the dealer and they said a part that controlled it went out ($2600) and they needed Nissan to approve the repair so we needed to pickup the vehicle. It took a month for them just to approve it, then took time to get the part. Funny thing was the dealership assured us there would be no charge. How could you charge someone for a warranty part on a vehicle with 5000 miles and only 6 months old?…They replaced the part and not a month later the screen started acting up and would go dead off and on. Needless to say I traded it off on another brand. I’ll never own a Nissan ever again. All vehicles can have a part fail, but it’s how they handle the issue that’s more important to me.

Hi David, Very high praise for the Nissan armada. I will definitely look into one and test drive one. I will tell you down here living very close to San Antonio. There are a lot of tundras. I don’t see that many sequoias, but they do have problems. In fact, there is a recall for tundras that the Dashboard goes out because it’s all digital. These are some of the technology features in my opinion that go crazy over the top and that’s why I like old-school vehicles like the LX 570. I truly enjoyed this video as I do all your videos learning about quality control, and hopefully someday if I can get to Florida and sell this house, I will test drive the Nissan armada. I hope they end up making the tundra and the Sequoia in Japan but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I just hope it does someday.
The 4WD auto option is really great. Amazing in thick snow and ice if going off the beaten path
I drove every suv in the segment, and my Denali was easy to get in and out, it was unreliable. I owned a 15 Infiniti QX80, lost it in the divorce so when I grabbed a Hermosa blue 23 Armada at $12,000 off platinum trim I bought it and by all means living with this every day it is tried and true. The QX80 trim vs trim on the Nissan falls short but performance is amazing and a vehicle that isn’t eco friendly means years of trouble free service. Absolutely amazing spot on review, and correct on every level. The remaining armadas are selling at huge incentives and personally would grab one before they change this top end drivetrain

It’s a rebadged Patrol. Starting in 2016 I believe.
What year is this particular Armada ?
From day one the Armada stood out as a monster tow vehicle. I've bought a couple of them and they always have trailer brakes added and a story from the owners about pulling campers all over the country. Nissan is not perfect, but these are a stand out in their lineup. The engines and drivetrain are super reliable, but you will have to put up with hvac actuators breaking when they get a little older. But I will take that over a Tahoe and their multiple problems any day. What Nissan SHOULD do going forward is lower compression a bit, add a couple of turbos, make the increase in HP very modest or none at all staying in the 400-450 range (mostly limited by the fuel system being DI), and give that fuel economy a boost (puns). Even stock these motors can easily handle 550hp on a power adder, so the engineering won't be much on the engine side to make the VK go another 5 years or so.
i think US made nissan Armada is a less version of worldwide model Nissan Patrol, Patrol has more offroad modes, diff locks and slightly differ bumpers, also patrol is 100% made in Japan. Patrol is direct competitor of Toyotas Land Cruiser 200 and 300 series in upper size offroad SUV. good review sir, for comparing it to US large suv sequoia.
I know you said cost cutting was the reason for putting in a solid rear axle, but do they not want to be competitive? Especially the Sequoia; I can understand maybe a pick up truck.

In several interviews Toyota's lead truck engineer revealed that Toyota head office did not want to spend money developing a new generation of Sequoia when the old one sold less than a thousand units a month. By cutting out the unique independent rear suspension as well as the Torsen center differential (which allowed a high speed 4WD setting) the new Sequoia gained approval. The jury is still out on the long term ramifications of the compromises.
Thanks for the honest review. Surprised to say the least since I know you as a Toyota/Lexus guy.
We live in strange times where the LC is no longer sold in the US but the Nissan Armada (Patrol) is. The Patrol has features that the US Armada does not have. The Patrol has Hydraulic Body Motion Control, a hydraulic-based system with a cylinder at each wheel. It will soften the anti-roll bars and allow for a lot more wheel travel. The Patrol also gets a proper rear locking diff.

Sounds like you prefer the last generation Sequoia too as it is pretty much the same as the Nissan. I agree. I’m on my second Sequoia (first was 2013 now have 2021) and love it.
I love the hate for the Armada. I have a 2014, so mine is the older boxier version. Mine has 150k on it, it doesn't burn a drop of oil, the ride and drive is magnificent and there are no squeaks or rattles in it. I have done a tune up on it myself, done the fluids or had them done depending on which one. The v8 is easy to work on, a simplistic design and smooth. The thing is a road warrior. I have done several long trips where you set the cruise and let it run 80 for hours at a time. Does it drink gas, if in town running errands, yes it does. If you are on the highway running 80, about 17 or a tad better. If you are running 65-70, I have seen 20. The big difference is that it is a V8, it doesn't have all the cylinder deactivation stuff that makes GM and Chrysler V8s flaky and the simplicity and reliability versus 1-3 mpg is a trade off that I think is worth it. You don't buy a suv this size for mileage. If you want mileage, there are tons of small suvs to pick from. The only vehicle I have owned that I loved driving as much as the Armada was my Escalade. For the record, it sucked gas as much or more as well. As someone who values comfort and reliability, its head and shoulders above the Tahoe/suburban/yukons and Expeditions when you consider the savings in cost to purchase vs gas. You can buy alot of gas for that $10-15k savings on equal grades of vehicle and features.
should I buy S trim I heave small kids ?
I'm looking at buying a used 2017 Armada. Is this knocking noise that the V8 engine is susceptible to something to be concerned about? The car will be out of warranty so I don't want something that's going to die on me.
Armada's are a great value (compared to other full-sized SUV's).......but, NOT buying new. They depreciate like crazy. I was 'on the fence' about a 2021 for $38k or a 2015 for $16k. I like the 1st gen body style and 4wd system better, but I was tempted by the 390 horsepower (with regular fuel) and the, "Made in Japan" aspect. Went with a 2015 and, especially after driving a 2023 (as a loaner vehicle) for two days, I am glad I went with the 2015. In my opinion, the 2015 interior, while not as 'upscale' looking as the 2021, feels more solid. Also, the Y62 engine is a smooth, powerful beast, however I prefer the more truck-like ride and driver experience of the 2015 TA-60. Odd that I have seen Lexus and Toyota engineers on YT explaining Toyota's thought process with certain decisions, yet I have never seen Nissan engineers make themselves available. With the "Off-Road" aftermarket being as strong as it is in the U.S., I do not understand Nissan not offering the same 'off-road' features of the Patrol in the Armada............not to mention offering optional equipment like dedicated lifts, skid plates, bull bars, and a wider variety of wheels. I would think an (8 cylinder) Armada Pro 4x (rear diff, 2 speed transfer case, blacked out, 18 inch wheels, etc.) would fly off dealer lots..........especially since Toyota has all but abandoned their V8.
The current Armada is Nissan Patrol sold all over the world. It is second to none! Look up Y62 if you want some actions of armada in the wild: check DMW's and Grahm Cahil's Y62 build.
Can you. Do review of the Nissan Frontier pro-xbpro/ cons over Tacoma plz
Wish you interacted more with comments from us. 🤨
I think the Armada is a really good suv. Lots of power and features, too. Lots of buyers overlook this suv.
How does the Armada a compare to your GX?

I had a 2012 qx56 and now a gx460. The qx56 was powerful, fast, comfortable, then at 185k I needed a new engine. I now own a gx460 for the reliability, but the qx is a much better drivers car.

Who uses Beautiful to describe an engine ? and MPG is a major factor... and please tell me WHY this V8 that is so old is reliable? does it have reported issues? what is the block made of? give me some details that I came here for.

Nissan patrol y62 released in 2010. You can't ask for fuel economy because you need a big engine to move this heavy weight mammoth and it has 140L fuel tank and that a very big tank Are the V8 reliable? Yes and in my opinion as an owner or previous owner it is better than the lc200 5.7 V8 engine and here in GCC the patrol is a very common vehicle and capable in our very hot area. VK56VD the name of the engine and it's made by aluminium block and aluminium head Yes there was a reported issue and it was stupid or minor and happened in early models from 2010 up to 2013 the problem was only in the white paint(other colours there was no problem at all), after some years you will see the paint fall off or removed from the body by itself but the issue solved after 2014. I would like to ask you, if you want to own the armada are you going to be using it as off road or you will use it normally + some times going off road?
Great car here in Australia we have the Nissan patrol y62 I think there are some suspension differences 😂
These are the same reasons I bought a new 2020 Sequoia before Toyota screwed up a great design. It is actually my second Sequoia (2008) which was nearly flawless.

this or the current V8 GX?
I love my 2013 Nissan Armada Platinum. It has the smoothest V8 and shifting transmission I’ve ever driven. But…. All of the interior rattles and poor door seals really get on my nerves. Also, the unsettling front end is annoying.
I’d love to know if you had to pick just one….2023 GX vs. 2023 Armada ?

I’m guessing the Lexus. It’s easier to drive, more fun to drive and a lot more reliable!!

For me the Armada is the winner because: 1. I have tall family members. Rear legroom is impressive in the Armada. 2. More cargo volume. 3. Lift gate which is great during rainy days. 4. Fuel economy is actually better in the Armada if you are disciplined enough to not rev the V8 (direct injection, VVEL, 7 speed transmission). 5. The VK56 engine is a closed deck design and has a stronger crankshaft. 6. No Toyota tax

I had the QX and now own the GX. The QX is the better drivers car, but the GX is supposedly more reliable. My 2012 QX56 needed a new engine at 185k miles, the early models did have timing chain problems. I purchased the QX new for $12k under MSRP.
Auto 4WD is definitely a deal breaker living in Alaska. Otherwise, I love the look and ruggedness of the Sequoia.
Wonder how the independent suspension on the armada and tahoe compares to a true luxury sedan. For beat up city roads im starting to think these suv's are even better due to bigger tires
I believe the Armada is offered with a diesel engine option overseas. Can you imagine the torque and fuel efficiency?

I'm a Nissan and Toyota person. I personally prefer the Armada and Titan over the Sequoia and Tundra. The Armada 5.6 V8 engine and hydraulic feels right. When it comes to cars, I prefer Toyota.
Me to!😊
Respectfully, the one reason you sighted in the first minute of the video for not choosing the Armada was a moot point, only reinforcing your case since the hybrid/turbo six cylinder from Toyota doesn't actually deliver any gas savings to speak of. The hybrid/turbo system sounds fuel efficient from the uninformed layman's point of view, but Toyota intentionally focused on maximizing horsepower and torque while counting on the casual association and public perception that hybrids are assumed to be easy on gas. They are a savvy company. I've worked for them for 18 years.
Buy this thing lightly used to negate the horrible resale value of the Armada. Otherwise an ancient dinosaur of an suv but should be ok in the reliability department
Toyota needs to make/have some of their trucks & SUVs to be more premium. The Capstone editions have just cosmetically features but needs features like the Land Cruiser 300 Series (build in). Yes, I was surprised by the Armada. In the end, competition and loss sales will bring Toyota around. I am hoping Toyota Japan would take more control over the North American operations.

Should have avoided the encompassing term "engineer" and used "I" instead. So, "5 reasons why I like a SUV like this over a Sequoia". Not all engineers have the same opinion. The will probably choose a Tahoe, Yukon or Expedition over that.
