I always wondered about this. I've known a lot of religious narcs and it always puzzled me why they seemed to have no fear of meeting God in the afterlife for a life review when their legacy was littered with hidden but deliberate cruelty and harm. Sounds like they even think they've got God under control!

I think the most important point about the religiosity of a narcissist is: they seek power physically and metaphysically. They want to make sure that they haven’t left any stone unturned. By being religious and superstitious in other ways, they increase their chances of being given power. It’s not that they believe in something, it’s that they can believe anything. Anything that could give them more power. I say this as a Christian.

This resonates so fkn much. My narc father was deeply a religious yet an alchoholic. I found it so weird how he didn't give a damn about the Hindu sense of morality, yet claims to be a devout Hindu. I remember being really curious about religious philosphy(from all religions across the globe) yet he never was, despite claiming to be religious. He would often fake to my mom about going to the temple, and come back home drunk and the a long fight would follow on. Thanks for the enlightenment, senor!

Very important & powerful information! In retrospect, this is what i now realize looking back on my life: From childhood, one side of my extended family had many extreme narcissists. They were highly religious and judgmental and even involved in starting a church years earlier. As a teen i was brought into a (different) cultish religion by my parents and this church was run by a preacher who was harmfully narcissistic. verbally & emotionally abusive, and i stayed only because of being convinced that exact message was the only way to avoid a terrible eternity. After several years, i felt broken mentally before finally getting out. During my time in that church, i was pushed into a long-time relationship with a dangerous covert narc and as a result had many years of DV, while they pretended to be a "fine upstanding citizen" and active in different churches. Escaping that, ended up with yet another religious narc, grandiose, who was also highly abusive. Today am becoming educated about narcissism and am free of such relationships! I am also happily spiritual, instead of religious.

My ex husband is now passed away but I met him in church and he lived a very dark double life that was kept hidden but since he knew scriptures he seemed so godly. What resonated the most was your comment about narcissists creating their own definitions. My husband was mostly pretty indifferent to church-his involvement always centered around working in the sound booth, to which he dedicated untold hours. But when he discovered Pentecostalism, a light turned on for him. He was now able to bring his narcissistic against-ness through that means. I was not comfortable with those beliefs after careful research. But he clung to them in a way I had never seen him do in 45 years. Instead of wanting to preserve our relationship, he clings to what makes him feel good. He will not allow any discussion about it, or examine the truth for himself. And it all happened around that tactic of redefining Truth. Thank you so much for bringing this to light!

Actually, my narc demon father hated me practising religion. Except of course "honor thy father" 😂😂 But I do remember how he used to tell us to repeat the prayer after him. Not the written prayer but his spoken prayer and you could make out he's not in it but just using the prayer to stage himself. And I remember him complaining about me using a religious greeting just because my mothers family uses that greeting. Also, I remember him teaching me a prayer which is considered very important in my religion but later on I learned the correct prayer and there was a mispronounciation in the way he taught me. I dont if it was intentional or not but everyone in religion knows that mispronoucing that one prayer is serious and blasphemeous. Its weird how he used to teach me when I was small but later on he got furious when I actually developed a natural keenness in religion and prayer. Whatever was going on in his head, he was a demon and detested real religiousity and spirituality. When he could stage himself as a teacher, it was fine but when I started learning on my own and the correct way, he got mad and started shaming me for it. And btw, today I can make out narcissists by the way someone SEEKS reward, appreciation, attention etc. Because I myself have become so introvert in the sense that I want nothing from any person. I only want from God. If God loves me, its love. If He rewards me, its a reward. I literally dont care what ppl think anymore. But everything narcissists do is staged to get from others. Like beggars standing there with a begging bowl. I know my attitude isnt normal or healthy but I can see the extreme opposite in narcissists. They go on and on explaining their POV, their version of a story, keep talking and talking until the other person is too tired to listen or contradict. I just leave everything to God, if God wants to save me, He'll prompt me or inspire me. I'm never ever gonna run behind ppl or feel bad that someone has a wrong impression of me.

"SELF-ESTEEM" is a philosophy not just a word it the way of living. That's what happen when they choose selfish over self-esteem. We can prevent our children not to have these narcissist traits. Self-esteem goes a long way. Self-esteem align with moral and integrity.

My narcissistic father after losing all of his supply, turned to a Christian addiction church. He now leads recovery and claims to have healed from alcoholism. All fake, all lies, yet the church leaders and followers have been eating it up for about 5 years, give or take a couple. I do not envy those people trying to recover under such toxic guidance. I also had a narcissistic partner use politics in a similar light. Thankfully the world of politics is much wiser than most religious communities (in my experience, no hate to religious people or groups!), so I'm more confident my ex's career will crash and never recover. People deserve better guidance and representation than narcissists.

My man got totally annoyed with this idea and fought with me even ended up linking a relationship interest from me towards this so called brother... It's been more than a year n a half this incident happened n I have stopped thinking much or responding this way when ever my man says something is wrong with some one we know.. I don't even express prayers now due to the fear of unwanted fights etc... I do not understand the Behavior.. Just know this is not going to change.. Is anyone aware of this behavior n reasons??

My mother acts like she is trying to be the weakest, most miserable sinner in order to get Jesus to pay attention to her. She said once “I love Jesus so much, it’s almost romantic.” I knew then that she is a very sick person. So grandiose, behold the bride of Christ.

Which is hilarious because their ENTIRE personality consists of at least 5 of the 7 deadly sins, and they break these sins every single day with flying colors 😂. Still pray for these lost souls because it isn’t worth having anger, misery, and/or hatred in your heart that will speed up your death process. You reap what you sow and god deal’s with them accordingly. Theres a 99.9% chance that they won’t be entering the pearly gates when it’s all set and done so don’t beat yourself up 😁. Stay strong folks!

Yes or blatantly ignore the parts of the religion where it clearly says how they are to behave. Like they might focus on your submission and clearly ignore the following verse that says love and don’t be bitter towards your wives and don’t provoke your children. Don’t cover your wife with the cloak of violence.

For them religion is a facade to trap others financially - easiest victims are relatives. My great-grandmother entrusted her properties to her son-in-law to manage it for she was illiterate. She assumed he was trustworthy because he looked religious and educated. Turned out to be a great betrayer who sold most of her properties without her knowing with the lies of 'expensive tax' and the need to feed his 11 children for he was unemployed. Turned out that none of his children graduated, all are still living in rentals and are fighting in the courts amongst themselves over inheritance. Its been over a year now, and should this be prolonged, possibly they all will go bankrupt in paying off legal fees as their never ending disputed still continue on courts till this day. Karma indeed.

My narc husband loves to use scripture about respect even though he doesn't have respect for me or the marriage. Then he talks about his role as my head, but does nothing close to leading our home. He loves when ppl say he's wise, but doesn't live by The Word at aaaaallllll!!! It has caused me to question my faith. He has his own interpretations of the scripture, and rejects anybody else's interpretation. He claims he is a godly man, and I don't know how to submit.
