5 reasons to go stoveless backpacking, and 5 reasons not to cold soak

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Wondering if going stoveless is for you? 5 pros and cons about a cold soaking meal plan for backpacking. Leave the stove at home, go stoveless backpacking and save some weight and time.
Please note, in this video I mention that all you have to do is add a little water to clean out your container. That is because I am a plant based (vegan) so there is no fatty residue to clean-up. Carnivores might need a little soap :)

You got me into cold soaking in your early videos, so thank you! It's also worth noting that you can cold soak as a step in cooking that food later, so you end up using less fuel (rice, pasta, etc). On longer hikes it's nice mixing things up a bit.

One reason that I like cold soaking is that it creates less food odors around my campsite that might attract critters. I do carry either/or a pack of plain instant grits or instant mashed potatoes for when I add too much water.

I have no problem eating cold meals any time of year nor with drinking with the grey water. The "grey water" just makes sense. I'm a big fan of thermos cooking which I do at home in the hot weather because I don't like to start up the stove. As a spin-off I started cold soaking. I thought I invented it lol! I find thermos cooking handy year-round, too, at home or the trail. Assuming one wants to pack any cooking gear, I find a crossover of cold soaking is perfect: I get the dry goods ready to go as a cold soak and then all I need to do is a quick warm-up if I feel I need to. Much less time intensive than cooking from scratch. Also, if you're cooking in a vehicle or tent, a shorter period of time to be creating Steam.

Geez...in winter I do a lot of shorter trips, get to trailhead and do 2-3 hours before camp in the dark, and then out the next day. I have NEVER thought of the thermos idea. That would be perfect, it's not like the weight would make any difference for a hike so short. I could just simply fill with hot water and drop cold soak container into my sleeping bag and that would be good enough.

I started using a titanium pot with a lid that I put a piece of food grade silicone sheeting between the pot and lid and then a couple of heavy duty rubber bands around to keep it sealed. www.flickr.com/photos/marckxviolins/50400048546/ That way I can also use it for cooking, if I want to, or for boiling water over a fire, if my water filter breaks. The other day my wife and I went on a day hike where we got up to the snow level. Before we left I put boiling water in it, wrapped it in a plastic bag, just to be on the safe side, and then wrapped it in my spare clothes and jacket in my pack. Not only did I have a nice warm lunch in the snow, but my spare clothes stayed warm for the whole hike! One of my favorite uses for cold soaking was on a long day where it was getting late before we were close to camp. I stopped long enough to set up my cold soaked meal, then later stopped and ate dinner right on the trail while my friend with his stove was complaining about not having a level place to set up and cook. I'm always on the lookout for more cold soaked meal ideas. Please keep those coming! I love your videos and your sense of humor. Hope you are doing well despite the pandemic. All the best, Scott

I carry my food while it's soaking for a very (I think, anyway) sane reason. Where I live we have grizzly bears. I pour water in my jar and put it in one of my water bottle pockets about 30 minutes before I want dinner. I then eat and continue hiking a couple of miles before setting up camp. I hang my food bag with the cold soak jar a good distance from where my tarp will go. Might be overkill but it gives me peace of mind

Not over kill at all! Not sure if it's still common practice, but years ago we used to bring like a nylon cheap running suit, whoever cooked would wear that and up it would go into the bear bag.

I stopped trying to figure that out :). Unfortunately I must have smudged the lens so it is not even clear enough to see. It was not a wire down to my ear piece. I stopped having my wife read scripts to me last year :)
