The traditional Systems Administrator role will evolve entirely cloud as the role is changing due to rapid cloud migration. Most organizations are operating Hybrid both on-on and in the cloud while there some that are entirely cloud. There are already job titles such as Cloud Administrator, DevOps, SysOp Engineers, Cloud Engineer that will replace the traditional sysadmin role. The Systems Administrator role will never be the same for years to come. Microsoft retired their legacy server Administration certs with cloud certs. No more MCSA and MCSE.

@@seetsamolapo5600 All depends if you are general sysadmin that's Jack of all trades or a sysadmin that specializes such as a Redhat Linux Administrator or Windows Server Admin. Ones that specializes makes more money. I'm a Red Hat Linux Sysadmin and Desktop Support Tech all on one.

Since you got the job without any degree, now, I'm wondering what type of cert is, well I don't want to say the best, but let's say the one that can prove that we have the knowledge? Hi Marko, glad to have you here. Congratulation on your journey so far and I hope the best for you. I actually don't have any certifications and ended up gaining experience through my internship which led me to get a fulltime position. So I am not sure if I can answer your question from experience but ultimately you want to show employers that you have the skills that they are looking for. In fact most of the Job listings that I've ever looked at don't normally require certs (expect a few for RedHat). If it was me, I would look at some job listings and see if they require any kind of cert or maybe if they mention the technologies they use and try to match the cert that best fits it. Otherwise, I don't think it matters a whole lot which cert. Additionally, I would try to do personal projects to demonstrate your understanding further. Hope that helps!

@@HenokTech Thanks a lot for your reply! I am now a bit relieved since choosing a cert isn't something, let's say, big. I thought that some of them might be deal-breakers since they are way too entry level or something. I have seen that RedHat certs are very popular, so I thought one day maybe get to explore that area and get certified, since getting a job with a cert might be just a bit easier. I am also in the process of learning python, just so I can be versatile and understand principles of programming. I am planning to make a couple of projects and post them on GitHub. But besides them, what other projects can be done? Some bash scripting? Or working on Apache, BIND, Samba? Also, an idea for the next video: What are the most common problems system administrators face? What usually goes wrong?

Doesn't work that way in the real world. No one starts off as a Sysadmin off the batt. You need piror experience before moving into those roles. You first start out at the Help before moving up as I see a lot people new starting out doing things backwards. Typical career path to become a Systems Administrator is Help Desk (Level 1) - Desktop Support Technician ( Level 2) - > Jr. Sysadmin to Sysadmin.

You start out at the help desk before moving up as a Sysadmin. Once you been on the Help Desk or Deskside Support then apply and move into a "Junior Level" systemadmin role not a mid level or senior level Sysadmin. You need piror experience in IT to become a System admin.

I think this is what im going to shoot for. I have a AAS in Info Tech and have been doing Tier 1&2 for the army as contractor making 27 a hr for 3 years, but its brain rot and no thinking required and im starting to get depression lol. Do you think I should get my BA or start getting certs? My job will pay me back for any cert if I pass so there that. Great video my man.

Thank you! Sounds like Certs will be your better option, it's free and potentially faster. Also I'm going to assume you have a clearance if you work with the army, if not, see if they can help you get one. This will be very helpful if you stay in the army/DoD industry.

Please do I need to obtain CompTIA A + cert before learning Linux? I have knowledge on foundation in Linux in my first year in a community college.

I think it will be hard to go directly to system admin but it's not impossible. No harm in applying though, you can also see if there are junior sysadmin positions as well. But yes, I think starting out in helpdesk and then trying to go into sysadmin is the more natural choice.

Hi Henok and greetings frrom Brazil!! About the LPI certifications. Is it a good business to have them to start a career as a sysAdmin? What other certifications would recommend?

Hi Jefferson, any Linux certification will be a big plus for a role like system administration. CCNA or another networking cert would be good as well. But certifications are good for landing you job interviews, what's more important to a hiring manager is that you know your stuff and have good practical experience to demonstrate that.

Nice video, I want to ask you... what certification do you recommend to get first by example, Microsoft MCSE or Linux LPIC? I see much demand in Linux, but I want to know your recommendation. thanks a lot.

Thank you, this is hard to say because I don't think the two certs are at the same level. I think LPIC is more entry level and the equivalent probably is MCSA. Either way, it depends on what you work on daily and where you want to go with your career. If you're just getting started I would probably look at CompTIA A+ or something similar

Those certs don't exist anymore as every is moving to the Cloud. Microsoft replaced all of their legacy certs with Azure cloud certs. The traditional Systems Administrator role is changing and changing fast due to rapid growth of migration to the cloud. The new sysadmin will be Cloud Administration, DevOps and SysOP. All traditional IT roles are changing that won't be the same.

Hey bro, great video :) Im about to finish my LAN admin associate degree. Do you know what would be a good bachelor degree to choose from? Unfortuanately, the credits dont transfer so I have to start from the base. Or should I apply to a entry level job and gain experience and maybe in the future finish my bachelors?

I think this depends on you. If I were in your shoes I would apply to jobs right away, mainly because that's the end goal anyways and I think an associates is good enough. As far as what bachelor degree to choose, it sounds like Network Administration is the most fitting one based on your associate degree but system administration, just general IT degree, or anything that you find interesting.

John, sure thing and thank you. If you have 0 experience I would start at HelpDesk first. Learn basics about how computers work, networking, windows, linux, servers, etc. Do some personal projects. If you have the means get some certifications, do so to validate your skills. After that just keep learning and expand your technical skills. If you want a guide on what to learn then, look at some job posting that look attractive to you and look the skills needed. Hope that helps.

Hi. I spent a few weeks in a server room. And I feel like it damaged my hearing. My question. How often does a sys admin work in a server room? I love the tech and this career. But I dislike super loud noise level environments. Thank u

Depends on the company and where they host their data. For instance, my company has a small data center in house so I work in a server room often and I usually wear a noise protection headset. This is usually only for initial set up and if a server is not reachable, I can majority of the time access them remotely so I don't need to be in the server room when working on them. Also a lot of companies are moving to the cloud, so cloud engineering or devops kinda roles are also an option.

Do i need to learn advance level of coding skils to become a sysadmin? And is coding really used in sysadmin or if you know a bit of coding then it will be alright?

Most IT jobs don't mandate a degree. Experience is really the key. Nearly every System Administrator job posting always has in there OR "Equivalent Experience" with absent of a degree. Lots of Sysadmins and Engineers I know don't have a degree. Network Chuck didn't have a degree either that became a Network admin and Network Engineer that started out at the Help Desk.

I’ve heard systems engineer and sysadmin used interchangeably. Is there a difference? Or is it the same.

You're right sometimes companies use those roles interchangeably but the difference is that sysadmins are usually responsible for managing systems while system engineers are responsible for designing and architecting them. But I don't see the distinction being made in smaller and midsize companies.

Get RHCSA and have a good internship. That will land you a 6 figure first Job.

Rather than it disappearing, I would say it's evolving. There will still be systems that need to be administered but some are now in the cloud (big datacenters) and can be managed in different ways than they used to be in the past.

It has the different path in IT and a roadmap to different positions in IT. And yes, you can absolutely go to cloud computing from sysadmin role, in fact that's probably arguably a natural move. I'm afraid your IT program maybe out of date if they aren't covering modern material. Cloud Administrator, DevOp, and SysOP is the future that will replace the traditional Systems Administrator role.

@@eman0828 that’s not true. How do you think the cloud technologies exist? They aren’t literally in the cloud. Real routers, switches and servers make them happen. We are a long ways from not needed System and Network Admins. The company that I’m working for is hiring for that role often. I do agree that studying cloud technology is important.

You don’t need any experience in the it field for most tier 1 help desk jobs. I started at $20hr. It depends on the company. Have good customer service/experience and be able to answer basic IT troubleshooting questions during your interview. Set up a small home lab using physical equipment or virtual.

@@eman0828 the person never said they aren’t learning cloud technology. So maybe you people need to brush up on reading comprehension. There are still companies using legacy software and 10+ year old equipment. Not all companies can afford to jump on the new tech wave. No need to worry about “traditional” system admin roles going away or changing that much. All you have to do is look at system admin job postings to see that nothing has been taken away.

Good luck because it would be newly impossible to land a Sysadmin job without prior IT experience. Sysadmin is not an entry level role. You start at the bottom and move up into that role at least Help desk to Jr. Sysadmin.
