Most competitive? The 90’s was the expansion era which meant the league was watered down in terms of talent and quality. 5 teams failed to rack up 20 wins in either the 97 or 98 season. Competitive? What a joke. The league as whole was never physical either. It was just the Pistons, Knicks, and individuals you can count on two hands. Just cause there was less spacing like there is today, and guys were sometimes able to get away with hand checking since they weren’t good enough as on ball defenders to stop elite scorers, doesn’t mean defences we’re “tougher” lol.

@@juanchohitdalotto there was actually physicality not just pistons or knicks and the heat, also expansion era has been debunked casual. 1991-1995 there were o sub 20 win teams in the east while there was only 1 sub 20 win team in 1996-98. one of them was in the east. teams like the heat magic and hornets were contenders and were from expansion. stop acting like the bulls didn`t get affected lol, they lost BJ armstrong in the 1995 expansion draft and why didn`t anybody say anything in the late 80s when there were expansion teams like the magic and heat ? lol. that narrative is used to discredit jordan and it`s been debunked many times.

3:04 I live in Germany and back then from 1996 to 1998 the final series was broadcast on German television for the first time, and everyone got up at 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. to watch the games. Then went to sleep again for an hour and then got to school an hour later and in school the number one topic was of course only Chicago Bulls or The NBA and Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, etc. Those were just the best years, and as I said, with an extreme time difference, we all got up at night and that was the number 1 topic of conversation at school.

'90s NBC broadcast was by far the best production value. They didn't have NFL on their network so they gave the NBA their full attention. Pre game was a major half hour production. The music sounded epic. Very talented hosts like Hannah storm, Peter Vesey, corny ass Bob Costas. Marv Albert calling.. Everything felt like a big deal.. This was all before the internet diluted Mass Media. Then ABC took over and we got like a 3 minute pregame. No wonder the ratings declined.

Nothing before and after will hit you harder than the Roundball Rock. 3. Michael Jeffery Jordan is the greatest show on the hardwood you will ever witness. 4. Rivalries, physicality and intensity was much more profound amongst teams and players 5. Superstars in general were more loyal to their franchise and made it easier to identify with said franchise. I agree with your point, except loyalty. Loyalty is one sided, as most teams are not loyal to their best players. You can easily be traded if you are a superstar who is past your prime but you want to finish your twilight years on a team that you played for since day 1. You can even be their best player and still be traded against your wishes if there is a better option. Teams don't care about your loyalty or moral code. Players staying with one team is only good for narrative, but looking objectively it's unfair and even hypocritical. Why would the players be loyal when their teams play by business rules?

Anyone who says The 90s were a weak era because they didn't have any or weak skills.... What kind of skill do players have these days? All they do is take three point shots. and driving to the basket without any special skill. Anyone can go to the basket as they wish, and encounter a defense that is not playing a defense. the movements Michael Jordan invented back then are now becoming more of a standard in the NBA. That he was 20 or 25 years ahead of his time There was so much more variety, there were a lot more game levels that were played ... three point shots yes, but also a lot midrange, but also driving to the basket, contact dunks, there were hook shots, there were fadaways, there was hard on and off ball defense, there were strong blocks, there was handshaking, so there were many many facets of the game, and nowadays? and now it's just three points and run to the basket without skill and without any defense The biggest difference is simple, back then you had to work out a good shooting position or to get there, nowadays you don't have to do that anymore, you don't have to come up with any offensive tricks or moves or whatever, you can pull a 3pointer at any time or go to the basket at any time. Without using any particular movement to get there. And then you can just move to the basket without any Skill, because there is no defense at all and the defense is generally so weak that it cannot prevent you from getting anywhere and in the 90s you had to use tricks , movements, screens, a high game IQ to go to the point on the court where you wanted to go on, nowadays you just go there because the defense just doesn't exist anymore

I’ve never read anything so wrong…the only reason Michael stood out is because he was way, way, way ahead of his time and no one came close to his offensive abilities. If you dropped skilled iso players like D-Wade, Harden, Lou Will, or even JR Smith in the mid 80’s and 90’s the gap would’ve been so much closer. Scorers/Bigs today are way more versatile compared to those in the 80’s and 90’s cause they’re able to adapt to the zone defence. Players back then had it so easy cause all they got was man to man defence. Why do you think Shaq was never the same once the league allowed zone? It’s cause the zone allowed guys to clog the paint or even double him before he even got the ball. And you think players like Ewing and David Robinson would dominate today lol. Hakeem would of, but the rest of these one dimensional bigs? Hell no.

I've been watching the NBA since 1991 . I saw prime Jordan (1992) prime kobe (2002) and prime LeBron (2012) and you're right, jn the 1990s they were not playing basketball only . They were in wrestlemania. You throw punches , push people around and barely get called for a foul., and if you argue with a player and almost got into a fight. Your punishment probably will be going to the bench just to go back to the game minutes later . It was hard man. Hard league. Then after that physical game then you had the mental game . And trust me ... a lot of players in today's NBA wouldn't have been able to play back then the mental game was even worst than the physical game .if you don't believe it just check the comments and interviews from the 90s players ,talking about how crazy the mental game was .Jordan. Reggie, bird, Thomas, Chuck person , Xavier McDaniels. Man. .I can keep going for days . Those players would have made these players of today cry on the basketball court .just by their mental game alone. Can't compare that Era to this NBA of today . Who the fuck got the balls to go into the opposite team locker room and tell the opposite players ......hey, beready for a long night . You guys are done ! And then come and drop 55 points on those players faces ? Only in the 90s

Oh you were able to push people around and barely get called for a foul? Is that why all of the “rough shots” players got hit with was a foul? Is that why MJ got phantom calls almost every game after 1990 after HE complained about the physicality of the Pistons to David Stern? The NBA wasn’t physical lol just the Pistons, Knicks, and a handful of players you could count with two hands. Players weren’t having boxing matches like it was the 70’s either. I’ve seen the same amount of punches thrown today and in the 2000’s when comparing to the 90’s you older heads love to overrate. Just cause the league advised it’s refs to let certain things go in the past, dosen’t mean players today wouldn’t do the same. Players today are just more mentally disciplined. Players know their value to the team which is why they don’t pull what players used to pull. Refs being more emotional and sensitive dosen’t help too.

The 90's NBA was the most balanced version of the NBA, regarding the player skills, the rules, the personalities, the playing styles. Even the fact that players weren't such good shooters as they are today contributed to the balance of the game then. Today, with so many excellent shooters, the focus is on outside shooting, which kind of ruins the inside game which was very impressive in the 90s...

  • @juanchohitdalotto

Other than Michael and Hakeem, the level of talent in the NBA was balanced because everyone was one dimensional with their game. The league itself wasn’t balanced either cause the expansion teams lowered the level of talent and quality in the league. 5 teams failed to rack up 20 wins for the 97/98 season, but you wanna call that balance? The league was so uncompetitive in the 90’s that same teams were seeing each other in the playoffs every year which led to older fans and the media calling it “rivalries”. Zone defence being introduced in the early 2000’s helped the NBA and basketball as a whole cause it exposed one dimensional players like Shaq by having teams clog the paint when he got the ball in the post, or even double him before he even got the ball. Now we have scorers/bigs who can adapt to the zone and who can score both inside and outside.

@@juanchohitdalotto the ratio of multi-skilled players to single-skilled players in the 90s was about the same as it is today, i.e. few players have multiple skills today, most players today are just as one dimensional as back then. The league expansion did not make the league unbalanced or lowered the quality of the league, because the league had the same players after the expansion as before the expansion. The new players that entered the league due to the expansion did not matter in the slightest, as you mention, and this was only for a couple of years. The reason they were rivalries between the teams, i.e. the reasons the same teams met in the playoffs, was because the league was actually balanced, and the superstars did not leave their team to go form superteams. The superstars wanted to be the ones to be remembered as the main protagonists, and the managers tried to build teams around them. There was a limited version of zone defense allowed in the 90s. And even if full zone was allowed in 2000, that did not stop Shaq from winning multiple championships.

  • @juanchohitdalotto

@@axilmar254 Majority of players today are more athletic, skilled, and versatile. There’s guys who are the 8-15th men in their roster who would’ve been in higher roles even 10-15 years ago. And the expansion did lower the quality of the league. The players expansion team were drafting were the 10th-15th men on other teams rosters or random overseas players. Which meant the key players for the expansion teams had no business being in that position. More teams + more players = bigger gap between teams & a watered down league. That’s not a balanced league. Shaq’s prime ended prematurely as well. After 2002 which was the year the league implemented the zone, he was never the same dominant force. Teams started to clog the paint and even started to double him before he even got the ball. He won 1 more championship but D-Wade was the one who led Miami. Had D-Wade gotten injured that series they don’t win cause Shaq wouldnt have been able to put Miami on his back the way he would’ve years prior. Other elite scorers struggled the year the zone was implemented but were able to adapt.

@@juanchohitdalotto Today's players are better trained. They are not more athletic, skilled or versatile though. The level of talent (either physical or mental) is exactly the same as it ever was. Yes, there are a few bigs that shoot more from the perimeter these days, but none of those big's game plays any role in the wins of their teams. Those bigs do not shoot like Steph, Klay, Lilard, etc and therefore their outside shooting plays a very small role in the outcome. The expansion of the NBA did not affect the outcome, simply because the new players weren't any good. It may be that the overall talent was lowered by the expansion, but the talent at the top remained the same, and therefore the outcome was not affected by the expansion. The zone was formally allowed in 2001-2002, and guess who won the ring that year? Shaq with the Lakers. It was the 3rd title in a row for Shaq, and he had big trouble with his toe already. He stopped being so dominant not because of the zone, but because he wasn't motivated enough, after the 3-peat, and he had injuries.

The current era is loaded w/ talent plus the recent rule change makes things more competitive. The 90s was one of the greatest eras in basketball, but its nothing compared to the 80s & this current era will surpass it one day. This era is getting better & better everytime.

I'm so sick of lies and half truths with no context. You were not allowed to play zone defense. Jordan himself described why he hated zones in the NBA and how it was an advantage for the defense. There was no parity in the league. Outside of the Bulls the most consistent team were probably the Jazz. Outside of that there was no other great teams. Some good teams but no dynasty. The year Jordan didn't play no ecf team won. The two best defensive teams played in the finals and people called the series boring(not me). The following year the ecf champs got swept. The first time an 8 seed beat a top seed the 90s. Some of the worst records in NBA history the 90s. Watered down expansion league 90s. It wasn't until the end of the decade where things started picking up. The league was more physical then but not to the degree that people make it out to be, because David Stern had stopped most of the over physical b.s. including not being able to breathe hard on Jordan or make him uncomfortable. Some guys were on the team just to be a big body or an enforcer "you got 6 fouls use'em". It was a lot of tall lumbering giants at that time. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of the game, all era's. But nostalgia is a helluva drug. Ask players of the 60s,70s or 80s which era was the best and all would say the era they played in or the era they grew up watching.

The 90’s built the NBA brand, & created a global brand. The teams had drama, the games were more enjoyable to watch- look at the viewership-, and the refs were SO much better back then. No 90’s to follow up the great 80’s era, & there is no LeBron, KD, Steph, etc.. The sport needs a return to its roots. Teams need to be able to keep their player, agents and stars shouldn’t have a voice in team building, & we need real defense. Force players to score inside, or get faced up from 3. 3’s are encouraged by a spineless league, and it’s killing the game in the US.

The 80s > the 90s. Teams that would not even contend for titles in the 80s made the finals in the 90s. Teams with 1 true star like the Knicks and Pacers were contenders when in the 80s you needed 2-3 to contend. Just because Jordan's team won in the 90s does not mean you have to lie and over inflate the 90s. I saw it all live too.

I get tired of seeing the same shit every game no matter who's playin, let's jus jack up like 50 3s and see who can outscore who by doin that. It's a joke anymore. False the 60s to 75 was the best era of basketball refs were more strict and two hand checks were banned in 76 that could impede all player movement not just forward progress. Once two hand checks and strict refs were gone. Along with other rule changes. The fans got a false view that newer players were more athletic, because players were able to do more athletic looking moves and not get hurt for it. I'd take the 60 s to 75 players over any players in history. It's proven if you had it harder you do better. Common sense though is something most people don't have anymore and it's a sad world for it. Media influencers spread false truths vs the real truth. That's why the majority is wrong about the best players ever.
