@adamnesico not at any point did I say I hate the world. I love the real world I have as I've made it the best I can. I also love to escape that world at times to places beyond what some people struggle to even conceive. They are amazing and ripe for tasting and enjoying. Which is what i do. I hope this clarification helps you understand my perspective on Fantasy.

This might have been even more true in the past than today, but: there have been so many great fantasy works that are either for kids, or accessible to younger readers, that: Love Fantasy Reason: Many readers develop a love of fantasy when they're young, that they keep when they grow older. Hate Fantasy Reason: Fantasy has too often been perceived as "for children" or for those with immature tastes.

Being perceived for children couldn’t be further from the truth though as many series are specifically written for an adult audience such as A song of Ice and Fire, The First Law, Malazan Book of the Fallen, The Night Angel series. I absolutely love series like these that don’t shy away or gloss over anything, they are dark and gritty.

I get really vivid imagery when I read books and nothing comes close to Fantasy in giving me those amazing moments. My mind goes ultra creative and creates these huge worlds that just can't be properly put to screen. When someone describes a dark lord, my mind goes to the darkest places and makes them out to be this horrific creature. Then I see the movie version and it's just a guy in cool armor. Your mind will always create a more visually stunning portrayal of things and that's why I love reading.

What a fun and insightful video! thanks. I know everyone would have a different opinion but sometimes I wonder what would be a good fantasy book to entice a reader to try the genre for the first time. a gateway book, so to speak. Personally I think Abercrombie's The Blade itself would be a good starter. Just try one, if you don't like it you don't have to read the next one .....

Hello, lovers (and I guess haters) of fantasy. I'm looking to start a good Fantasy series. I've never read a fantasy book, but I do enjoy the genre because I really enjoyed movies/series such as Harry Potter, Game of thrones, LOTR, Outlander, Avatar, and anime/manga such as Attack on titan, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, Jujustu Kaisen, Death Note and much more. But anyways I'm looking for something that has a very good intricate and connected storyline with lots of plot twists and some mystery and other themes too. I'm ok with romance but as long as the plot isn't heavliy focused on it. I'm into page-turners I mainly read fiction books, thrillers, mystery, and suspense. If it doesn't have me wanting to find out what's going to happen next it's very hard for me to stick with it. I like some complexity to my stories and characters like Game of Thrones and Naruto. Would love some recommendations and tell me why you are recommending it. Thanks in advance.

Deus Ex Machina only happens if the writer wrote himself in a corner, they couldn't create tension and conflict, stakes, without relying on the improbable. So many fantasy writers fall into this pitfall, unfortunately. I don't necessarily believe hard magic solves this, it's purely a writing problem, in my opinion, they should just stop writing themselves into a corner; there are many ways to create tension and stakes.

Not sure what this would be listed under, but the sidekick/childhood friend/companion that goes missing/gets sidetracked/disappears/is killed and then advantageously/conveniently shows up towards the end of the book to team-up with/reunite/join their friend and carry the day.

That would be a trope, and though tropes exist in every book and aren't necessarily bad, they do run the risk of becoming cliche, like your example, or Johan's example in the video of the farm boy becoming a hero. You gotta make it make sense or put a fresh spin on it.

Mistborn The Final Empire is proof of that, as the ending of that book is a literal Deus Ex Machina that Sanderson just managed to make it work for the rest of the series. But in the first book, yeah it felt like it came absolutely out of nowhere, just when the heroes needed it the most... so conviniently....

Reasons for love: 1 Escapism: Any genre can act as escapism. Weak point 2 Fandoms: I wonder why only fantasy has fandoms. Fandoms give illusion of friendship? That is like say pornography is good because it gives u the illusion of practice sex. You sound so alienated. 3 limitless creativity? not true, you are limited by the prejudices, expectations, censorship, and ur own cultural mind limitations.

I am seriously expecting that a love story won't get in the way of a fantasy story, nor be the engine that propels the main character's motivation. Sure, love can happen sometimes, but not in every fantasy story, it doesn't spice things up for me nor raises the stakes in any way; also love isn't always mutual so the fact that it's almost always corresponded makes it even less believable for me. But hey, I am just someone with a keyboard and Wi-Fi, so what do I know about it?

"Nowdays we see much more representation in fantasy" True. (Also I've heard there are autistic characters in the Cosmere, that would be even more reason for me to love it if done right. And considering how repectful Sanderson is when treating other sensitive topics like Depression or Trauma, I think he can pull it off.) (Also I'm reading Stormlight now.... I've read the first interlude today.... Syl is the best character.) Edit: And no, it wasn't easy for people to get me into Stormlight. I thought I would struggle with the length. Instead I'm struggling with crying like a 5 year old child internally every time I have to read a Kaladin chapter. (poor Kaladin.... he deserved so much better....)

Hate fantasy: Reason 6: lots of crappy YA novels with same cliches and lot of fool stuff. Reason 7: Its being used as politic adoctrination tool. Reason 8: its becoming woke. Reason 9: Too many bad tv adaptations full of stupid changes. Reason 10: it doesn’t escapes from western thinking barriers. Books about other cultures are more fantastical and surprising.
