    Good speakers, especially at the $73 price I paid for them on Amazon. I added a subwoofer and have a music system that sounds great at relatively low cost. These Sony's require less power than the Elacs and sound more dynamic and exciting without creating fatigue in long listening sessions. I'm happy with my purchase.

    Given the amount of documented crossover upgrades available, even if purchased for $200/pr, and an $50 for crossover components, they measure better than anything close to their price range.

    Respectfully, I do not ever listen to the appearance of any speaker. Having performed with symphonic orchestras in the U.S. and some of the most renowned concert halls of Europe, I can attest to the extremely high sonic quality of the SSCS-5 speakers. My ears have always been faithful. I still enjoy peak experiences anytime the mood strikes me with the SSCS-5 speakers with reasonably competent sources. Just saying.

    I got, elac, Klipsch, neumis, jamo, and other speakers under $200, and for me the best of all of them are the Sony CS5. Is real that needs luck depends on where you are to place them, and with the room where you are going to hear music. But they are very solid. have decent electronics, and very good quality drivers. in some situations (Big rooms or placed right in the wall) they will need a subwoofer, but the clarity, resolution and balance of that Sony's are simply amazing. I have 2 pairs and i'm in the middle of a project to change (modify) the crossover of one pair, and let me tell you that in my first test with the great quality of the existent parts of the speakers they sound even better than some in the range of 600 -1500 US dollars that I have ( the base improves a LOT, the soundstage and the balance are even better. I inverted almost 180 dollars on that project and I get them for 75 dollars a couple of years ago), but sounds better than a way more expensieve Elac uni-fi, Elac refence , Wharfedale or Klipsch RP-600M. in every aspect any can compete with my modify CS5's.But even stock I think that if you get them for 100 dollars on sale and get a cheap subwoofer as the polk audio (120 dollars), elac sub 1010 (130 dollars) or even the 90 dollars monoprice subwoofer, for just 200 - 250 dollars, you get a great sound system than only can compare with bookshelfs over 500 dollars. esthetics? mm well it depends. i found the jamo;s too fake in the wood part for me ,They aren't to be in a design magazines, but with that sound quality, are more than good for me. They sounds great and with the grills on are pretty enough. As someone says before, get a mic tripod and also one for the camera ;) Regards!

    Dude, I have some elacs and kliipsch speakers and I do love the Sony's. I rotate my speakers out. The Sony's never let me down. I do think any of these speakers need a sub. I have two sound systems in my house. My other sound system has two giant Infinte Slopes Model twos. They weigh 125 lbs each. Both of my systems are powered by ADCOM GFA-555's. The Sony's can handle the amp.

    Like a lot of people, curiosity got the best of me after watching all the glowing reviews of the Sony SS CS5 speakers. They absolutely blew me away, not expecting the level of quality they possessed. I firmly believe that every link in the audio system chain from your source (Vinyl, CD, streaming) plays an important part in what comes out of the speaker. I am lucky to have accumulated a very inexpensive nondescript system that sounds fantastic. These speakers present a very well balanced sound, clarity and soundstage and a very competent bass. I heard someone say if I want to see what my system can do bass wise, to buy Adele's latest cd and play track number 8 "All Night Parking". Not being the biggest Adele fan, I did, again out of curiosity. I have these speakers on tables just shy of two feet high and one and a half feet from the wall. My listening point is about 11 feet away. At a very comfortable listening level, the bass literally vibrated up through the sofa I sit and listen on when I played this track. So I have to laugh when I hear people comment "they're a little weak on bass" or "for a speaker in this price range". Sony really nailed it!

    I just recently bought the Sony's new and paired them with a used Denon DRA-435 receiver. I like them a lot. You say to have at least a foot from the wall. I have them on a self in a bookcase but out about 8 inches. How important is placement, would I hear that much difference?

  • @techandgrant5886

    @techandgrant5886

    Жыл бұрын

    8 inches is probably enough, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You mainly want to give the port on the back a little room to breathe or it could sound off, maybe a little boomy. The most important part of placement is to get the main tweeter at ear level. You'll also want to make sure they're fairly separated from each other to properly form the soundstage. Basically, once vocals sound like they're coming from directly in the center of the space between the two speakers, you've hit the sweet spot. You may also want to toe them in a bit to direct the sound more at your head. But if it sounds good, don't worry about it. The most important part of speakers is enjoying them, not fussing over the details.

    I have had my my time with cheap speakers. Have a 5.1 Yamaha speaker package, which I paid $600.00 AUD for (including the subwoofer) the speakers need the sub to get full range. Upgraded the front speakers to a pair of Sherwood Alto 620 bookshelf speakers, which I paid $140 AUD for. I used them for a few years, but felt like I was still lacking in audio quality. The a few years back, I upgraded again to the Dynaudio Emit M20 bookshelf speakers, which retailed for $1299.00 AUD, but I paid $1050.00 AUD for them. I tell you what, I have never been happier! Don’t need a subwoofer with these speakers. Plenty of low end punch, smooth laid back sound, but still has the clarity and sparkle on the top end. Definitely worth the money!

    Sound great with a good amp and a sub. At this price they don't hurt to try out. Good points on alternatives without needing a sub. At times, they sound even magical. But, if I'm being honest, it took a lot of pampering to get a sound I was really consistently pleased with. I have mine connected to a $600 amp, $300 sub and sitting on top of sand-filled speaker stands. The mids can be very snappy which make for good acoustic and voice reproduction. My major gripe, after all the setup, has to be the lack of mid base. It is nearly not existent.

    Great suggestion! The Jamo Studio S Series 5.0 system is currently only $189.99 on Amazon, so that would be a pretty affordable system to check out on the channel soon. It doesn't come with a subwoofer, but they do sell 8 inch and 10 inch subs separately for, currently, $113-$174. All in, around $300 for a 5.1 system isn't bad, especially if you can find a decent 5.1 receiver used. I've got one on hand, so I wouldn't need to source it for testing. Would you want to see something like that, or one of the "home theater in a box" systems that comes with everything?

    There's lots of talk online about doing crossover upgrades on this speaker. GR Reasearch sells a kit, but it's $480. You can buy plans to build your own from Neil Blanchard for $20, parts are around $100 depending on which parts you get. Hard to say if the time and cost is worth just getting better speakers, but worth considering.

    I plan on making a video doing the crossover upgrades if these go on sale for under $100 again. Gotta have a second set so I can properly compare the two. But it is an interesting concept for sure. Would definitely do Neil's as at $480 for the upgrade, you're probably not gonna get your money's worth as the cabinet on these is kinda cheap. A more expensive speaker should have a much better cabinet design. But I can justify throwing $200 down the drain for science.

However, someone did a really nice review here: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/yamaha-ns-6490-3-way-budget-speaker-review.17042/ The basic idea of this review is that the speaker is very bright (lots of high frequency response, but not much else) and does not handle lots of power well. It is an old design from 2003 and is not structurally sound. The thin walls create unwanted resonances. Hope that helps!

The floor standing pioneer SP-FS52 absolutely awesome for the price and you can get one pair second hand about $120 to $150. The bookshelf pioneer, however, not impressed at all. The Sony, when on sale, worth 88 bucks for sure but not for full price in my opinion. Other similar small speakers I have, Klipsch KG2.2, Mission and a pair Whafedale Diamond for compare purposes. The Mission is my working room pair and they sounded pretty good with front port so I put them almost right up the wall and they cost me $20 bucks.

  • @techandgrant5886

    @techandgrant5886

    5 ай бұрын

    I haven't heard the R51Ms, but other reviewers have! From what I recall, Klipsch's sound signature tends to be bright whereas these Sony's are closer to a neutral sound with a little sparkle on top. The Klipsch are much more sensitive (93 dB!) so they'll play louder in general and need less power to get loud. However, bass rolls off much faster due to this with the -3 dB point at 62 Hz vs the Sony's 53 Hz. Both will likely need a sub to be satisfying, so I'd say it's a moot point. Best way to find out which is right for you is to audition both. If you have a local Best Buy they should have these both in house for auditioning. Otherwise, a local audio store may have them as well. If not, you can buy both from a store with a great return policy so you can audition both in home (where you'll be listening anyway) and return the pair you're not a fan of. Personally, even though I haven't heard the Klipsch, I'd go for the Sony's since they're at a lower price point. You can take the price difference to get a decent sub to pair with them and have a pleasant system with more range than just the Klipsch.

    I would hope any B&W speaker would be better for the prices they're asking! I do think the Polk TSi100s are better in some regards (currently using those in my office.) Great choice at $119, I found my pair locally for $40, basically unused. In a smaller room, I feel they don't even really need a sub. Bass and midrange are more pronounced, but I do prefer the Sony's highs. I've never found them harsh. I think the Sony's can also play a lot larger if you give them good, very clean power. The Polks sound better on a wider variety of systems, more of a jack of all trades. But I think you made the right choice, hearing for yourself in person is always the best review.

    Sounds good too! Sadly, I didn't around to reviewing them before I moved them on. But they sound good! Not neutral at all, they've got good bass and good highs, little lacking in the midrange for my tastes. The 803s that I pulled out here would be better suited to a medium sized room. The 801s are perfect for an office or surrounds, similar sound to the Elac BS-41s, just much brighter

    Don’t buy these for retail! Yes they’re still good at 170 but they always go on sale!! I would wait for a sale and pair them with a sub. They could do without one in a small room especially if your amp has tone controls but these things are amazing with tone controls in medium to small rooms

    You bring up some good points about not just defaulting to the Sony's. I considered the Jamo's and the Elac. But then the Sony's went on sale. I love the lighting in this video. It has a very 70s vibe. The microphone, the glasses and mustache are great too. Have you consider leaning into the 70s vibe. Check out the outfits from that 70s or Stranger Things. Have you thought about doing more used speaker hunting deals/reviews. Find the oldest speaker that still sounds good. Or the used speaker you should stay away from.

    Thanks! My hair has gotten long again and is pretty curly, so I'm leaning more into it. I just don't live in a climate that is favorable to dressing myself beyond pure comfort. I'd be sweating like a pig every day. I have thought about branching more into the used market, but my money hasn't been going into speakers recently. Good rule of thumb for old stuff is that if it's heavy, it's probably good. There's just so many speakers that have been manufactured over the years. I do have a used, older, obscure pair that is in my main setup that I'd like to review some day. They sound phenomenal. I do have an old set that sounds quite ok as well, and they look funky. Would love to get those reviewed too. As for the current moment, I do have some videos planned, but have not been able to find the time/motivation. I went to record the other day, and my microphone wasn't playing nice with my computer. Ran out of time to record while trying to figure it out. So stay tuned! Should have a video coming soon on speakers that likely no one should buy. I haven't even opened the boxes yet so I can reserve my judgements, but I'm not optimistic.

    I actually have an old set of one of those Sony stereos with speakers! They sound really bad lmao. But the SSCS5s are actually a good set of speakers. I haven't been paid by anyone to make a video on these. Trust me, no one is paying for these low quality vids except me lol. The SSCS5s even measure well objectively speaking if you wanna go look at some graphs. Placement, room size, room treatment, amplifier, and source are all important. Something might be off in your setup to make them sound like $45 speakers. Definitely worth the $88 I paid, but I wouldn't pay over $100 knowing that they usually go lower. At their current price, I'd recommend the Elac BS-41s instead, think they're about $120 on Amazon currently. Not as sharp of a high end, more filled out bass presence, and mids are comparable. The cabinet on the Elacs also looks/feels higher quality.

I only hear half a snare and the guitar sounds muffled instead of sparkly which destroys the music. one thing I like about this speaker is vocals being very upfront and the main thing you hear when listening to music but I personally like balance and sometimes even prefer the instruments to be a tinny bit more upfront than the vocals but that's just a personal preference

    I agree I don't like these Sony speakers at all. Reviewers can hype about them all they want. For a little more money you can get the NHT SuperOne 2.1 or the Ascend Acoustics HTM 200SE that are heads and tails better. Granted they are more money but they are worth saving up for something like one of those. The NHT have more bass while the Ascend are very neutral and a very linear sound. Pioneer SP-BS22 are way better than these Sony's and just as affordable as the Sony's while providing a superior sound. Not even close. Pioneer also have a superior affordable tower speaker that nobody has been able to match in it's price category the SP-FS52.
