Absolutely love this lens and focal length. Some of my favorite portraits and travels pics come from this lens, it's so easy to throw in my bag and always have on hand. Just wish it was an affordable f/2.0 or stabilized.....one day.
This is actually true in my experience as well. I shoot M43 and have a number of different lenses. The 20mm f1.7 pancake (40mm equivalent) is what I always come back to... And I have both a 50mm equiv and a 35ishmm equiv....both with big apertures.
Hang on I only bought a 50mm prime cause you said "that was the best focal length"..... cmon man my girlfriend is gonna kick my ass if I need "another".

Thank you for a very nice review! I have used 40 mm lenses since the days of Minolta CLE. Continued to use it on my Leicas! Never owned a 35 mm lens! When the mft came along I bought a GF1 with a 20 mm (40 mm ff) f 1,7. Still in daily use, superb lens. Bought a new GF1 a few days ago and it gives the 20 a new lease of life. Use many other focal ranges with my GX7. Regards and keep up the good work, Ulf

Have always liked 38-42mm rangefinders for many of the reasons you mention in regards to the focal length. But these days, and even more so as home scanning/post-processing continuously improves whether digital or film, I think 21-28mm on full frame is the most ideal. Just crop what you need. Otherwise I'd have to agree.. straight out of camera 38-42mm is the McGyver of full frame focal length.
I agree, the 40mm is a great focal length to shoot overall. This Canon 40mm pancake is good on 6D and the LUMIX 20mm is good on the mirrorless cameras

what do you recommend on a sony a6000?
@DrooliusFilms
6 жыл бұрын
Falena The crop factor for the A6000 is 1.5x so a 25mm lens would be close to 40mm, just a tad wider. I’m not too familiar with Sony lenses, but a 25mm lens would be a close equivalent at 37.5mm focal length. A 28mm lens would be 42mm.
Always entertaining. I came here for nice tips and humor and was not disappointed! :D

It is impressive how well your work holds up over the years. I recently picked up a 40mm F2 lens and it works extremely well, for all the reasons you cite.
The 40mm is great on a full frame but on an APS-C it's stuck in No man's land. On my APS-C I use the Canon 24mm f2.8 pancake lens instead along with the 50mm f1.8 for portraits. The 24 pancake is the perfect all purpose (landscapes, street et all) lens.

upgrade to full frame :) 6D is as low as 700$ used, and 5D mark I can be found as low as 200$. I found a 5D mark I with a 24-105 mark ii for only 630$ once on eBay. And believe me, full frame is worth it. Even the original 5D does incredibly in low light. The 5dmk2 can be found for roughly the same price as the 6D as well. All three of those options are incredible.

I was debating on this and the 35mm for my canon for a loooonng time, but I pulled the trigger about a month ago on the 40mm and I absolutely have no regrets. I was so used to the zoom lense on my canon that the pancake was just a breath of fresh air. It’s pretty damn sharp and extremely light. It’s my main now.

Me too, I have a Sony A7RIV and couldn't decide on the 35mm 1.4 or Sony's 40mm f2.5. I knew I wanted the 40mm but I also wanted a fast lens. In the end, I felt I had to stick to my guns and get the 40mm as also the 35mm is just so damn big!! Over twice the size and I think nearly 3 times the weight and over twice the price!! I'm super happy now and know I made the right choice :)

I have this lens, but only because 50 is too tight on my crop sensor. I didn't want to go wide angle so this was my compromise. In hindsight though even 40 is too tight still. So I bought a 30mm sigma which I'm liking, even if it's sharpness isn't as good.

John Ridley I would have gone with that if it were faster than 2 8. But I need better low light. 2.8 is ok, better than a kit, but still feels limiting.
It's also a pretty tough lens. I accidently dropped mine at the top of Red Rocks Amphitheater and it rolled and bounced all the way the way to just a few rows from the stage (thankfully it was in the morning and not many people there). A nice gentleman caught it and gave it back to me. It still works, but has some scuffs and makes a little noise while focusing. photos.google.com/search/lens/photo/AF1QipMUkbtAqHRxRVqD1mjLUurz0dW6k1ruIF10FikA

I use it on my EOS 1N....yes, a film camera, I’m one of “those” guys. Hey, I love film, what can I say. Anyway, with the Battery pack removed and the original battery in, the whole camera is pretty light and very easy to Carry around all day. Keep up the videos, they’re great.
