Fully agree. Av mode for the win. Not much point having a modern smart camera if you’re going to use it in full manual all the time. Dive into your settings and find a way to guide it to make exposure calls the way you want it, such as a minimum shutter speed. Add/subtract Ev to guide it, if you go anywhere with complex lighting. Street and Travel photography are quite similar, in that you’re looking for repeating movements in advance, so you can line up and capture the shot you want quickly. Also looking for where the light is coming from and where to position yourself for a clean background etc as you progress through the area. Cool video, and top guys Kai and Lol 👍🏻

I agree; Especially when you need to be quick. - Imagine if everyone had to use manual focus, which is tought for me because I use old cameras. - But while I used to use P-mode all the time, I now prefer to have control over the aperture and I'll let the camera meter (cause I don't know, nor do I have the time to bother). - All I'll do in terms of exposure is handle the Exposure Compensation. - But then I'm not talking purely about Street Photography, because that's not really my thing, I just shoot "anything".

I've recently got back into street photography after moving and I've gotten to the point where I'm constantly noticing great images even when I don't have my camera with me. Those moments are especially frustrating! Also, around me it seems much harder getting pictures of people not looking at their phones simply because pretty much everyone has their face glued to the screen all the time! Great to see you bring on Craig and Josh, just a note about the gear end, I think the camera you find convenient to carry around without sacrificing what you care about in your image quality is important. I will never recommend a dslr to friends trying to get into street as the larger weight and size tends to make you lazy about using it. If you're fine with that all the more power to you but I also find smaller body cameras are less intimidating to subjects and yourself.

@@rendonstudios yes, two different styles: the consciously chosen aesthetically pleasing arrangement of light & dark, lines & shapes, vs the random snapshot, the latter "style" being that of these two in the video, which requires thousands of shutter clicks for that one lucky coincidental winner. The spray and pray approach for the winning shot still more often than not leads to a "so what" reaction to the image. Good luck to them. The most important thing is that they enjoy what they are doing. That is all that matters for any style as the only reason you take photos is for your own personal pleasure (unless you are commissioned for specific output).

yeah but thats not good photography... you arent thinking of light or balance or any other artistic values... your basically just taking photos of people without them knowing, and producing the exact same photo over and over with different people

Kai! Nice music choices! Love Birocratic. Very good info here. Always hear people griping about people using auto, but all this proves that's not really what it's about. It's about always being ready to capture something. A lot of this applies to video too. Good stuff!

If you make photos to sell most websites and agents want a signed document for consent. How do you deal with that ?

not true, if the photos are in a public setting, you are completely allowed to take a photo of the person. you cant video tape them though... also, who the fuck is doing shows or websites with professionals? a lot of photographers I know just happen to be friends with gallery owners, or they make there own websites.

Are you legally required to ask someone's permission if you will be using photos or videos of them or their children for KZread, Instagram, etc? I've wondered that for a while. Also, if you interview someone are you required to get written consent to use that in a video that is public?

Better Life Reviews Depends on where you are. In most states in America there's no expectation of privacy while in public. That being said, I know there are public places and situations where photos taken for profit require permission or some license

It's one thing to talk about "fear" of shooting people without permission, but I feel like we should still have some sort of standard of what's an acceptable moment to share or not. Like the old man with his belly out an a dazed look on his face at 1:49 is that really something worth showing to hundreds of thousands of strangers on the internet? If that was your grandpa, would you share it without asking first? Just saying....

The New Travel I agree actually. That’s not either of our shots although I wouldn’t be bothered about sharing it for me it’s not a moment I would be after, the homeless and people eating, certain things I just don’t notice anymore because 1. It’s too easy and 2. I just don’t think it’s what I would want to see if I was in that situation.

  • @arryharry

    @arryharry

The New Travel I completely agree - even if something is compositionally perfect and tells a story, if it's not appropriate or just looks a step beyond, keep it in the coffers and don't share online for that shock factor. Only images of historical importance can fall into that niche category of 'needing' to be shared but even then, only through considered publications - not social media for hits. I wouldn't personally shoot people eating or even getting themselves into awkward / embarrassing situations, it just comes off as seeking to capture people at their most vulnerable and that is not what it should be about. For me. - It's one reason I'm not a huge fan of Bruce Gilden's shooting style but love Richard Sandler, who just about stayed on the right side of what's acceptable and captured some incredible images in time.

On the steamy streets of Hong Kong during the summer old people wear vests, some people spit, chinese people from china like to squat on their heels, roll there shirts up, smoke like chimneys. Should you censor reality or edit it out? It is what it is. An old man trying to keep cool on a hot day.

Also depending on the country you might get into trouble. In Germany we have a law thats called "Right of the own picture", which says that if someone takes a photo of you then you can decide whether this picture can get published or not. You can also demand the picture to get deleted. So you might get into serious trouble (StGB §201a) if you just take pictures of random people. Also generally people here don't like getting photographed by some random person.

The whole realizing that you're going to take some garbage and find the gems in the middle is what I always had trouble with but didn't really take notice of until now. Thinking back, I almost always tried too hard to be a perfectionist rather than focusing on shooting and knowing it'll still be there. (Though to be fair, I also don't do really do street that often.) I really need to work on that.

I'm curious - does anyone still buy street photos nowadays? I do get why it was interesting back when it was more of a photojournalism and documentary or it was kinda novelty, because there simply wasn't enough content, there weren't so many photographers that would shoot all kinds of photography. When it was really the only option to discover places, people, culture. As you know, photography nowadays, mainly street and travel, is available to everyone, so more and more people pick up whatever camera they can, travel to whatever place and shoot. It's all accessible. When everything and your toaster has a lens and everyone is ready and able to instantly share everything they can and will come to contact with. When everyone is a traveler, lifestyle blogger, street photographer, etc. Everyone has photos that are precious to them and everyone is rehashing everything. I'm aware you could respond on the note that you could stretch that thought to every other genre of photography, but the street photography is probably the genre, I wouldn't buy the prints of, just because I wouldn't probably see a point/interest outside of photojournalism and documenting, but then I'm not the client that would benefit from these pictures. Maybe some magazines would or someone would use/shoot it just to increase their traffic or likes on social media or blogging pages. For me personally It's difficult to appreciate. I'm not dissing, just thinking why.

  • 6 жыл бұрын

I actually do occasionally buy street prints from different street photographers like mrkirby or sixstreetunder. But those are more like ''fine art street photography".

  • 6 жыл бұрын

Okay, can't beat personal preference. There will always be someone who appreciates a tasteful photo of no matter what genre. I do like some street photos, but not as much in general.

Yeah the currency is little orange hearts on Instagram and followers. People spend lots of money and time trying to impress Instagram but it inevitably starts to shape your work around what an audience want. Also what’s a like? Someone spent maybe 3 seconds looking at one of your pictures on a tiny screen and double tapped and scrolled on. Seems a depressing way to experience photography and is why I gave up on Instagram.

Using film helps you progress quickly in the art of photography, given the price of films we are more in the search for quality than quantity. Personally for a photo I always do scouting, I come to the place several times, I try to find ideas for an interesting composition, I come to the place at different times of the day, I try to see what light I like the most. Once I have ideas in my head I come back with my camera, and I try to incorporate subjects into the scene. I don't run after people, I wait for them to enter my scene. It takes patience, but it's rewarding.

I don't agree entirely with the last point, Minimal Post Processing. You shouldn't depend wholly on post-processing to create a compelling image, of course. But beyond that it's a matter of taste. I don't accept the notion that street or other candid photography should necessarily have a naturalistic as opposed to stylized look.
