I decided to update the description with a small Q&A to answer some questions I have seen pop up here in the comments. I did not believe this video would get over 1,000 views, let alone (at the time of writing this comment) 28,000 views! Thank you for all the support! My mind really has been blown by it! I really want to respond to all the comments here but they have been coming in for some time now and I just completely lost pace. Q&A Q~How fast were they going/What was your speed? A~35-40 MPH (56KPH-64KPH) Q~Did you have a shotgun mic on your camera? A~Believe it or not I didn't! I shot this with my phone of of things! Q~I see that the A (Front) engine on Big Boy leads the B engine by about 40 - 60 degrees at the start of the video. At the end of the video, both engines are in phase. What is causing this (slip or a slight average rolling radius difference ? Any ideas ? A~From user Bill Cob: "...the lack of synchronization is tied to revs per mile. They are slightly different. Either one has slipped somewhere (as in a turn), or the tires on the drive wheels are slightly different in diameter. By 'tires', I mean the steel rings sweated onto the wheel rims. It's no big deal or concern. If there was a weight difference between the engines, then the tire or resulting rail deflection would cause a phase change, too. Slip is the usual culprit." Q~Are they oil burners? A~All UP Steam Program locomotives were converted to use No. 5 fuel oil. They originally burned coal. Q~Were there a bunch a people? A~Oh yes. Places were packed along the tracks. 844 was in fact converted to oil burning well before the program; all the FEF-3s were converted to oil-burning as a precaution against a coal shortage.

Agree. I saw my first steam locomotive in person recently and was just in aww 😊 of its noises and sounds. Like a living creature 👍🏼

Of all the many recent 4014 videos, this is the best. You almost feel you are onboard. Clanking rods, screaming turbo generators, and the best capture of Big Boy’s unique stack exhaust sound. Truly great.

I used to exercise race horses. This is the sound they make when they are running at their very best and breathing in perfect rhythm. It made my heart pound when I rode. This train and excellent video made my heart pound just like that. Thanks for the rush.

I just found out yesterday, that Big Boy was back on the tracks, again. I've known for a long while, that this beautiful beast was being revived and was over the moon, about it. Yesterday, I got a recommendation, here on KZread, for a video showing Big Boy exiting the train-works bay, for a trial run or breaking-in, for it's first trial run and that footage brought tears to my eyes! I watched 2 more videos of early runs and more tears came. I am almost a 60 year old woman and I have always had a love for all trains, especially the old ones. I just love them and love it even more, when they roll, under their own power, down the tracks, with smoke or steam billowing everywhere! I really wish I could be up North, just to watch Big Boy roll by me, just ONE TIME! I thank all of the people, including this poster, for sharing any and all videos, showing these gorgeous beasts, of burden, for the rest of us, who are not able to be on scene, to witness this incredible machine! =)

Don't want to confuse power/speed/tractive effort. Reciprocating steamers have engines with one gear-ratio, so the engineers who design them have to make compromises.

True the bigger the drivers the easier it is to get higher speeds but the 4000 class locomotives can do 75+ mph too. Just at a higher cost of steam and fuel vs 844 with larger drivers that don't have to turn as fast to attain the same result due to the engine moves further with each rotation.

You didn't tell us UP-844 was in on the action too! Fantastic!!

@@cherylali5113 Steam locomotives have been all but replaced by diesel/ electric locomotives in the modern era. To understand the Big Boy's significance, you have to understand 1800s American history and the settlement of the West. Steam locomotives, and the rails they ran on, gave America the ability to expand completely from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. These steam engines helped unite America into one, great entity and enabled people, industries, and goods to be speedily carried across the entire width and breadth of the Nation. 4014 is special because it has been brought back to full operation at a time when most of these locomotives have been long since scrapped or are museum pieces. Big Boy is a LIVING expression of America's desire to stretch 'from sea to shining sea'.

I would add that though the Big Boy was built in November of 1941, it's overall design carries on the great tradition of it's 1800's forebears.

Cool video thanks for sharing! I was hypnotized there for a minute watching the motion and hearing the rods.

Hat's off to Union Pacific for restoring these to their former glory and actually putting them to work hauling freight like they're supposed to.

Beautiful. Wish I was born about 40 years earlier. We need more railroads.

We used to go on board during the 1980-2010 era when it was parked at the LA Fairgrounds as an exhibit with other out of service trains. It has been amazing to watch it leave the fairgrounds in Pomona, CA and travel to the UP yard in Wyoming and get rehabbed and rebuilt and restored. Majestic.

Think about this. Every stroke of the piston in big boy delivers 6,500+ hp..... Every single stroke. And every stroke on a steam engine is a power stroke. Unlike modern combustion that is every 2 or 4 strokes.

Beautiful pieces of history. I've seen the 844 several times but am still waiting to see the 4014 in person.

A shout out to all the local police agencies and the Utah State Police! They were amazing. Friendly, calm and poised for putting up with all us crazed railfans. They were the best handling all that immense amount of traffic. Well done men and women in blue.

4014 and 844 both chugging along. Awesome! Thanks for sharing this! I saw an awesome video of the Santa Fe 3751 and it made me wish that they would get the old Southern Pacific 794 running again. It's sitting outside of Sunset Station in San Antonio. It would take a while and a bunch of money but it would be worth it!

Great video and I love the fact you got such clean sounds of the train and engine think about looping the sound track of the video for white noise to play when trying to sleep or study

wow, what an awesome video. Friends and I were on the highway running along the tracks heading toward Morgan Utah when she was coming to Ogden, and just by chance we happened to catch the engines. Paced them for 15 minutes or so but not nearly as close as this. But some good shots of the smoke plumes from both engines trailing along behind the length of the train.

Fantastic video. Congratulations! Praise also to the car driver to keep with it all the way and allow the different angled shots. I was at Ogden for the Fest! Great fun. Greetings from Germany.

This is a break in run. They say they will be increasing the tonnage and speed but not likely to see her pull a long freight. Notice the difference in wheel size between 844 and 1014. 844 was a primarily a fast passenger engine and 1014 was all about pulling weight at a slower speed. I believe the top speed for 1014 is about 65 but she normally ran slower digging down for the hard pull. I guess I'm not the only one who thinks her motion looks like two wild horse racing across the plains.

I've yet to see any Union Pacific steam loco run without a Nanny Diesel, so I highly doubt it.
