Parties will get the rest 29 as bonus seats based on the vote ratios (Yeah that's bit complicated, our election system) MPs will be selected by respective parties for these 29 seats which is called national list MPs and a national list MP can resign his MP seat in order to pave the way to another. That's what happened in Basil's case. One National list MP of SLPP, the ruling party resigned his seat in order to pave the way to Basil to enter the parliament. And there are news like the person who resigned is going to be the new High commissioner of Srilanka for Australia.

The fate of dynasties: The first generation is inclined towards conquest, the second towards administration. The third generation, being free from the necessity to conquer or administer, is left with the pleasurable task of spending the wealth of its ancestors on cultural pursuits. Consequently, by the fourth generation, a dynasty has usually spent its wealth as well as human energy. Hence, the downfall of each royal house is embedded in the very process of its rising ---- Khaldun

I think SG had missed another important point on Basil’s entry into parliament. Brothers had not only amended the constitution, but also illegally made Basil a MP. In SL, every party supposedly submit a list of candidate’s names to the election commission (EC)when filing the nomination with EC. Winning candidates are picked up from the list. Basil’s name was not on the list as the constitutional amendment was not taken place yet. Subsequently, Brother asked a sitting MP to resign and made Basil a MP, but his name was not on the original list filed with EC. In SL, Basil also know as 10%. Anyhow, thank you for taking up SL on your show.

"Foreign" institutions in their "modern" form, be it Democracy, or Communism/Socialism entered these civilizational nations, and became indigenized based on their long standing native socio-cultural preferences for governing structures.

Yes, the "माई बाप" culture continues to exist in this country. People are "grateful" towards contemporary politicians that merely authorised the creation of various useful laws and institutions necessary to run a country. We see politicians being glorified like gods( like jayalalitha having her own temple, Ambedkar being treated like a God despite him literally despising the same, slogan of "Indira is India", mamta banerjee being compared to maa durga, bal thakre being called "hindu-hriday samrat", kejri and modi both having a massive political cult around themselves, etc etc) which is very hurtful. Ambedkar was right when he said tha "we are imposing democracy on a people and soil that are essentially undemocratic"

The dynasty phenomenon comes from the mindset in sub continent that parents should ensure they set the life of their children before they die. So they'll try to accumulate as much wealth as possible for their children and will ensure they transfer the 'business' to their kids before they die. This is considered as a moral duty by parents. Contrast this with the West where parents effectively separate themselves from their children's life once they grow up. The children are then expected to build their own life and work to build their own career and fortune. Parent only provide the basic support but usually don't give things for free just because they are their kids. But yes, exception do exists.

I think as an Indian (I mean greater Indian or SE Asian) our instinct is to trust people we know. So let us say we have an established business relationship. Once that guys passes away, if his son approaches us and requests us to continue the relationship with him; then we are more inclined to do that, than look elsewhere. Because we trust his son will continue to behave like his father and keep our trust, and largely this is proven to be true, and this is an ingrained behavior in all of us. Why else do you think our current liege has to work so hard to paint an unwilling and undeserving opponent in bad light and call him "pappu" ?

The phenomenon of dynasties in subcontinent's politics simply shows that democracy is a system artificially grafted here by foreign powers rather than by any popular movements as our official history books teach us. For most of the common people of the subcontinent, the ideal of political power still remains monarchy whether consciously or subconsciously. After all monarchy system made the subcontinent the centre of economy and power in the ancient, medieval and the early modern world and this land still carries the memories of those glory days in it's every pore.

All the best to The Print with the new membership plan. Although it's not possible to be totally unbiased, I see this platform to be very consistently balanced in their views. Thus added myself as a member. As for why Indian subcontinent has so much dynastic politics, my view is that ours is to a large extent a collectivist culture that easily allows loyalties to get transferred within families and allows the family to become an institution in itself.

Dynastic succession in subcontinent politics has more to do with lack of focus on individual identity but more on group identity which is prevalent current in indian thinking. Having said that, "heirs" are seen as not as someone who are to be assessed for their individual merit but flagbearers of group interest. Also it may also be linked to the centralized party structure or higher command and top driven political organizations. Others may have different views so please share your views 🙏

But In my 10th grade, I thought of writing a time travel book called science killer about traveling to the ancient past and replace every existing science with a very radically new set of science very different from contemporary science and witness the consequences, its effect on the human condition & experience, and the very nature and philosophy of science, But ever since I hit a writer's block,I abandoned or postponed the project altogether, But these days I keep it as a nostalgic reminder to complete it in future !!! However,I just pretend to others that It just means killing superstition with science,so the name "sciencekiller" or it's just a song by black angels music band!!!LOL Any way great recommendations sir looking forward to completing them!!!

Dynasty politics in the subcontinent might be because of historical reason.. raja, nawab, etc people are emotionally connected to them... To the extent that rajas in India are sometimes equated to gods in ancient times.. you remember tilak was sent to Mandalay jail in order to emotionally keep him very distant from the people loved him.. one more instance after revolt of 1857 mughal ruler zafar was sent to Rangoon jail, because people were emotionally treated them as their protectors.. people in the subcontinent once commit to any leader as their leader, emotionally, then their family is also dear to them, support them to any extent..

The problem reason we have a tradition of dynasty in the subcontinent could probably be: 1. Family is a cultural concept in the subcontinent and ‘ Family leaders are respected and held in high esteem 2. Therefore when they are succeeded by their family members, there is a trust built into their successors arising from the previous elder

Most of the dynasties in South Asia faced struggles and shocks (assassinations) and those factors attracted people Another major point is the existence of poverty with low literacy which lead to lack of critical and reasonable thinking towards politics These can be the reasons why South Asia is influenced by dynasties

It's not endemic to the subcontinent and within the subcontinent, not just limited to politics. Dynasts in India don't fail because these families have created a virtual monopoly where it is nearly impossible for anyone else to challenge them. It's like going to a supermarket to find only one type of product in each category. For e.g. The future CM of TN or the next Bollywood Superstar is already known. Unless they score self-goals and ruin their prospects.

@ThePrint Sir, we don't think that dynasty politics is good or bad, as long as people have faith in you will not only survive but thrive but in my opinion, True democracy would prevail only when people from all walks of life will get equal opportunity to demonstrate their potential in making this nation great and there wouldn’t be any concentration of power and wealth limited to a few. In short, too much concentration of power makes the public stand in waiting queues whereas the favoured ones get the free passages. BTW wish you all the luck for this initiative of paid membership, as we need a junction where news is unhyphenated and have both point of view. -:)

I believe dynasties are the ultimate results of parties without strong political ideology.. when the only ideological aim is to keep power blind loyalty becomes the only merit that matters and any outside junior member with leadership capabilities will be seen as a threat. This is why in india parties with low number of dynasties are BJP and CPI (even they have some small dynasties in state level but not much)

It's a good but difficult question to answers. I wanna give it a try but just like anyone else I may be firing in the dark. I think this part of the continent is very accustomed to being ruled by royalty for millenniums, a sense of loyalty and goodwill (which I admire sometimes). Besides, what choice does a poorly educated population have besides putting their faith in appointed Ideals? Moreover, I have observed our culture gives a lot of importance to family heritage. We prefer living in large families, businesses are family affairs and I agree it comes with its own set of advantages but as you said, we are not a perfect democracy or, I may add, a perfect culture.

  • @shubhrakamshome3140

Outsourcing is inbuilt in subcontinental culture. Specialization is also a characteristic for millenniums. A priest’s child become priests, a potters child a potter and so forth. Thus it is probably accepted that the child who grew up in a political environment is likely to be exposed to nitty-gritty of politics and managing party politics will be a better candidate to run with the baton better than any other. Apart from the fact that being child or a family member of so and so, is likely to be better recognized by constituents and media than a common Joe.
