I actually really liked The Attack of the Phantom Karate Devils when I got a pirated copy as a kid. It had lots of atmosphere, and I had never seen such huge sprites, and it really felt like you were on a journey in a strange world. And as you mention, it was a very early release so it deserves some extra grace. The rest of the games are undoubtedly bad.

The game doesn't use sprites; it's pretty obvious it uses character graphics, poorly. Notice how it draws, and notice all of the moving elements ("sprites") move a whole character block at a time, and most of the character graphics they used haven't even been redefined but just used the standard predefined set.
The A-team was obviously made by someone who never saw the show

Always wondered if that A-Team game had a retail box when sold in stores or was it just copied at Commodore 64 meetup expos back in the early 80’s. I wonder if it was for NTSC or Pal. Imagine them putting Mr. T on the box art.

I used to love putting random tapes in my Commodore. You could get extremely cheap games from newsagents over here, and often free with magazines. The only problem was, it'd take thirty minutes or so for a cassette game to load, so if it was bad! You'd sunk a fair bit of time to load and figure out the controls! But it was pretty much no internet reviews, just how cool the case looked, so it was always an interesting guessing game!

There were SO MANY games for the C64, and plenty of truly great ones. But also A LOT of really bad ones. In some cases the games changed by region (like with Ikari Warriors). The problem is, because the C64, Speccy, Amstrad, etc. libraries are so vast in the amount of games released for those systems (without including modern homebrew games and type-ins) there was always going to be an overabundance of what we refer today as "shovelware".

I agree those are some pretty bad games! I remember having "copy parties" with friends and we would have dual disk drives hooked up to do direct copies of each others floppies. I ended up with hundreds of floppies and can say with confidence that there were a lot of really bad games on the 64. I didn't care whether a game was good or bad, I just wanted it. I still have most of those games, and the disks have probably not been in a drive in 30 years or more. On the bright side, there were also tons of great games for the 64,

My worst of the worst was Gauntlet for C64. The arcade was my favourite and I was waiting for so much for this to be released. It was released so unfinished that you hardly could complete the first level because of bugs. Characters would disappear off the screen etc. The actual play area was maybe a quarter of regular C64 active screen area.
Throughout your into, I've been chanting Bionic Granny... Lol it was the last C64 game I bought as a kid before my system was packed away for 30 years :)

well in the earlie 80s hundreds of games where released on every platform and theres a reason why you only know a few of them most of them where like these games, the home computers where able to stay a floot even with all the bad games out
The music in 911 Tiger Shark is actually a rendition of "Pop Corn" by Gershon Kingsley from 1969, and it's a wild listen when you consider that it's 52 years old at this point: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYeGpcemlpWweMY.html It's arguably the first synthpop single; a re-recording of it in 1972 was relatively successful.
I wanna say Highlander was on C64 and what’s sad was it was purposely made bad due to royalties fears. The company didn’t think they could pay it all If it sold well so it had bad controls and stuff

Apparently, the game's coder was only 12 years old at the time he coded the game, The publisher basically rushed him to release an UNFINISHED version
Old, but... Try North Star, and Cobra. They may not be nearly the worst, but I find them frustratingly unplayable without cheats nevertheless. The redeeming factors are the nice graphics... and both have listenable music made by late Ben Daglish. Cobra had a song that was on the soundtrack album of the movie, but not in the actual movie. One earlyish release (let's give it some credit for that) is the Cascade 50 collection. The tape version especially... while it has a few nice little games on it, others are not worth the time... and it was made in such a stupid way, that each game has the turbo loader individually on the tape, then the turbo data chunk. Some games would have benefited from loading straight with the factory protocol as it would have taken less time than loading the turbo loader. Also, there was no progress indicator, you would stare at the light blue screen for a long time, not knowing if the game is actually loading.

you should have played "dancing monster"... I once made fun of Attack of the Phantom Karate Devils in a forum and the original author mr. Orthel defended his game by saying that it was the first ever fighting game on the C64. I had fun with the game back when it was new. But i was 8 years old or so. I could just have fun by moving the cursor on the screen. I you ever want to try really bad games try : Chuck Norris, Ninja Master, Dancing Monster, Hard Drivin', Bionic Commando(NTSC Version).

The music from the 911 Tiger Shark game ripped off "Popcorn" by Hot Butter.
Rocky Horror Picture Show had me very confused as an 11-year old. I liked the music and knew it was supposed to be funny, but trying to get anywhere seemed ridiculous.
I highly doubt that that A-Team game was licensed. There were all kinds of low-rent computer games and shovelware from small/unknown publishers based on popular IPs of the time.
Those versions of C64 Ikari Warriors. At least one of them is good. C64 also has two versions of Double Dragon , one is kind-of bad, and the other is a crime against humanity.

I can't believe that something as bad as the A-Team game even exists! It's a disgrace. The concept itself is totally wrong, not to mention the gameplay.
The Attack of the Phantom Karate Devils looks like a broken LCD game.
The 24 dislikes were all full time bionic grannies.
I loved Ultima IV, F-19.Stealth Fighter, Pirates! and The Last Ninja 1 & 2. C64 had some excellent memorable games.
Alternate title: 5 games that would have been classics on the ZX Spectrum... (Kidding... kidding... ;-) )
Lol I played that AotPKD. For like 10 seconds. Glad I copied it back then. Been real mad if I'd bought it.
Hot popcorn! I could buy that just for the tune.
lol... I was wondering why Ikari Warriors was your #2 example... then I realized that 35 years ago, I was playing the pirated European version.
I always consider "Miami Vice" as one of the worst games. A lot of C64 games were made by one guy in a couple of weeks so it wasn't any wonder if they were bad. But "Miami Vice" was published by Ocean who were one of the top game companies at the time. They *should* have had the resources to make a good game, if they'd only bothered to. But no, they published this real stinker of a game, probably presuming that it would sell on the strength of the name only. Maybe it did. A complete rip-off.
Ikari warrior Game play was very similar to "Who dares Win 2" Perhaps it was the same programmer.
As much as I love the franchises, two of the worst C64 games were Transformers and Ninja Turtles. Turtles was especially bad considering it was a port of the NES game. The graphics were atrocious and it was missing one of the levels. Transformers had one or two redeeming features such as an interesting intro, a choice of 8 characters including Rodimus Prime rather than Optimus, which featured an animated transformation sequence for the character you selected and a synthesised version of the theme tune. The game itself was terrible and ridiculously difficult.
I would have added Miami vice on there...do you recall that one?? It was appalling 😂...it was one of the 8 games I got with my c64 in 1988.
I was worried my ears were about to start bleeding from the music from Bionic Granny. Truly dreadful
The A-Team looks like a low-budget cheapsteak licensed game for the Commodore 64. (7:56)
