I don't believe so. But it's very uncommon for death to happen. Of course it did but most fighters left the arena to come back later to fight. Good fighters were worth too much and many gladiators knew each other so killing wasn't popular. However they gave it their all and those who were slaves fought very hard because it's their only escape. The career volunteers were different with a much higher chance of survival.

In fact, most contemporary written history about Nero nearly all dates from AFTER his reign. And since all four emperors in that tumultuous year 68-69 " year of the four emperors" had to ensure their status, they all took down very negatively on Nero's reign. That was a very interesting Dutch degree thesis describing the real popularity of Nero during his life... which, I think you may be surprised, was major.

When talking about Odoacer it should always be mentioned that he had served for years in the Roman Army fighting in internal civil wars. The last Emperor refused Odoacer's demands of land within the Empire for him and his troops after they helped the Emperor win his position, and it was only after this that Odoacer revolted and took Rome. Its also worth mentioning that he was wise enough to not proclaim himself the new Western Emperor, which he easily could have, and instead accepted the lesser title of King with the support of the Roman Senate.
